  1. Give me a break guys, talk about looking in the rear-vision mirror and hitting the tree. I can tell you from a personal level, Neeld was out of his depth 1 month in at this club - he personally told me. If you think that the win/loss impact of Roos (who according to the associated avatars on this forum has more nous than any coach going around) was $equivalently different from what Mark Neeld delivered, then shoot me down. The guy had his reputation, his career and his income smashed in the experience at MFC and just for your info, he was on pretty low $. Maybe that's all he deserved I hear you saying.....get a life, move on and leave the poor bloke alone. If you want to blast me, maybe focus the replies on Lyon and co who decided he was the man for the job. I'm out, you guys are a pack of rabid drifters - and if you need to learn the definition of a drifter, read some Napoleon Hill

  5. Great post and I respect you for coming on here and defending the guy. At the end of the day its good from a human nature point of view that he has a job in the AFL again. He really was a very highly rated assistant coach at Collingwood just ask Scott Pendlebury. He tried what what he thought was best for the footy club and he did install proper AFL training standard. Its not like he got appointed to try and fail this club im sure he tried his best just like we all do when we head into a new working environment. All the best Neeldy.

  8. Come on, you've been around long enough to know that it's more important for one to be able to brag that they were right than it is to get the best outcome for the MFC.

  9. From zero to h_h to lol in 15 minutes! That is a new record for Demonland. Well done to Scythe, but also to h_h for his general obliviousness and impatience. Oh, and welcome to McCartney - may he wear sunscreen on his nose now and into the future.

  10. He is mate. 4 premierships as a player, one as reserves coach at Brisbane and a great record as a coach with Sydney and Footscray. A really good bloke who will do well and get the senior coaching premiership he deserves. A great selection by them.

  11. I can tell you now this source is quoted from Brendan McCartney himself. He is going to the Dees on Monday. He wrote his own contract. He is VERY happy and sounds like he may even be our next senior coach in waiting. His role won't be much next year. He rejected Essendon senior gig because of the scandal. He built a bonfire with all his doggies stuff, had a party and burnt it cos he was treated like crap there. Probably the only scoop I'll ever have so passing it on to fellow Demonlanders

  12. I think this is a good appointment. Yes he failed as senior coach but was a good assistant and there's no reason he can't go back to being one. He was out of his depth in our mess and it's taken a couple of years and still counting for us to unravel it. He was hit by more than the reality bus when he was at Melbourne. Good luck to him.

  13. From Paige Cardona's recent Phantom Draft: A player of Patrick McCartins standing is unlikely to slip past Melbournes compensation pick here at pick three, and there are plenty of reasons why. Touted as the number one pick for the majority of the year, McCartin could be the perfect partner in crime alongside Jesse Hogan, laying the foundations for the Demons forward line for the next decade. McCartin is a genuine, old-fashioned full forward. He busts through packs, takes big contested grabs, inspires with his courage and is always the source of headaches for the opposition. He likes to treat opposition players as if he were going ten pin bowling: he has no regard for his own safety, and his aggression and physicality goes unmatched. McCartin relishes body-on-body contact, and is near unbeatable nor moveable one-on-one. He loves to drag his opponent to the goal square where he puts his contested marking ability to full use, but his quick turn of foot and smart leading patterns means that he is a focal target up forward, capable of taking any oppositions best defender. Hampered by small injuries throughout the year, McCartin hasnt gotten the love or hype he deserves, which is great news for Melbourne fans. Seems like he would complement Hogan really well too with Hogan being more of a mobile CHF type and McCartin as an inside 50 player. I like this appraisal a lot. In analysing our situation, we DESPERATELY need another KPF. However, having said that I would like to hope that the following scenarios might play out. So according to this appraisal I would definitely do the following If St. Kilda take Mc Cartin at pick one then we must take both Petracca and Brayshaw with picks 2,3. I wouldn't take any other of the talls mooted at 2 or 3 because in my view Mc Cartin is the standout. No one else comes close. If this situation occurs then I would take the best available KPF at pick 40 If St; Kilda take Petracca then we take Brayshaw and then Mc Cartin. Win Win

  14. Roos appears to me a person who would take in everyone's opinion and make them feel valued and then guide you to come to the exact same opinion as he holds.

  16. Making GNF look like a rank amateur. Well done Kurt, but if you do get some inside info in future just make sure releasing the info doesn't hurt the club. Very good appointment. As Colin said, we've got experience and proven people now coaching our team, a far cry from the Mark Neeld days. Good luck Brendan and I'll now go away and try and learn to spell your name correctly..............

  19. I think it's good that Goodwin himself suggested McCartney would be a good mentor for him when Roos leaves. Our biggest downfall in the last ten years is player development , and this guy is the best in the business.

  20. I seriously rate landing Macca as something of a coup. he would have been feted by quite a few discerning clubs. He came to us People are starting to come to us as we know.......'If we build it....."

  21. Interesting posters questioning him with regard to his failure at the doggies. I won't be as bold to suggest who failed whom at the doggies however... We didn't hire Neeld as head coach because he was a poor assistant St Kilda didn't hire Watters as head coach because he was a poor assistant The list goes on... McCartney is very well credentialed. I think posters need to understand that highly respected and effective assistants don't necessarily go on to make good head coaches but that does not detract from the fact that they are very good assistants. (Have a read of the tributes to Neeld from Collingwood players when he left to come to us) If Roos thinks he is a good assistant to have then it is it good enough for me. As an aside - This is why I like a succession plan. Whilst Goodwin will not be completely left to run the ship solo in 2016, Roos will definitely step back and let Goodwin take the reins to see how he performs and mentor him so there is not a shock to the system in 2017 when Goodwin becomes the head coach in his own right. I read an article on the Swans handover to Longmire and the same pattern they followed - the move from Longmire to Roos was seamless as the players already experienced a year of Longmire running the ship even though Roos was head coach. ( the one disclaimer in all this, is Roos has got to like what he sees of Goodwin in 2016 in his L plates head coach year)

  22. His actual words to me were that he hadn't come across such negativity from a group AFL players and that at a purely personal level with them, he was struggling to see a way through the black-dogs that he was working with....can I recall Roos saying something similar, maybe more succinctly? Anyway, a done argument, time to move on as none of this really goes anywhere

  24. I think we must get McCartin if Petracca goes at number 1. I feel he would provide greater depth for our team in allowing us to send Hogan down back if we need the cover. Not only that, but lets be real here. Dawes and Hogan right now can't stay injury free to save themselves. It's just as beneficial landing a ready to go midfielder through free agency as it is getting a ready to go forward.

  25. That AFL.com article is flawed beyond say year one, 2006. Had MFC recruited those players in 2006,2007 instead of the ones actually drafted, you immediately have different players making up the playing group, and then different outcomes at the end of that season, a different ladder placing at the end of each season, and therefore different picks the following years, which immediately makes his comparisons in subsequent years irrelevant. So if MFC had in fact recruited Tippett, Gray, Dangerfield and the like in 2006/07, as suggested in the article, and those players led to better performances and more wins, the club wouldn't have had the high picks in the following years to have picked all those players that he's listed and claims that the club missed, over all those subsequent years.

  26. Most of those reasons are a load of unsubstantiated dribble. "Hated by everyone" at the Bulldogs. "Lucky" to be at Geelong for ten years. Complete nonsense. When you cement with saying we may as well get Neeld back, you can't honestly be expected to be taken seriously. You strike me as the type of poster who knocks everything to claim bragging rights if things don't pan out. Like that actually means something. It's ridiculously easy to just be negative and pot everyone. There are plenty of reasons to like about a McCartney appointment that you are refusing to acknowledge. That's why you are coming across as a twit.

  27. Spencer played the game of his life under Craig before injury. Fitzpatrick had a great end to 2013. Watts a pretty solid end to the year. Clisby looked like a player. But the main one is Garland who had a big relationship with Craig. I think you'll find Nathan Jones was a fan of his as well. Anyway it's not about specifics. Craig largely did his job which was to support Neeld. Unfortunately it's hard to support a guy who's self destructive. But I actually would've had a lesser opinion of Craig if he hung Neeld out to dry at first opportunity. McCartney has worked with Goodwin. I'll think they'll make a really nice duo. Obviously they have to follow on from what Roos does, but note that Sydney won a flag with Longmire when he tweaked the game plan but kept the successful frame work and culture. You're drastically overrating footy game plans if you think we brought Roos in for some special defensive master plan. We brought him in to make us a successful club that people want to work at and to have a winning culture.

  29. Well done kurt! Put his balls on the line and cut straight to the chase. None of this pathetic riddles [censored] or anything like that. I also believe this is the second rumour you have got right before Kurt?? Again congrats. You have definitely won alot of admirers and respect here already on Deeland.

  30. It does throw in to light what Roos will be doing following his handover to Goodwin. Roos himself has said that he's already had talks with the club about a position that would see him remain at the club in some capacity. I guess we have two years of not really having to worry about it and by then it probably won't matter too much anyway if the process of succession Roos and Jackson have put in place actually works.

  31. Yes, because Cameron Schwab is responsible for Jack Trengove's injury. FMD He was responsible for a lot of negligent and poor overseeing in his time, but he is not responsible for this one. I refuse to believe that Trengove went through all of 2012 - 2014 with a fractured/injured foot. It may excuse his 2014 absence, but not his very poor form for the 2 years prior. The blame for Trengove's 2012 & 2013 is the coaching group headed by MN. Schwab bashing is absolutely justifiable, but let's keep it in the areas where he did screw us over. There are so many to choose from and no need to create false one's.

  34. I am assuming him starting in Feb is partly due to the fact that the guy would need a break to deal with the fact that he was fired and now works somewhere else. That, and he gotta spend his firing monies!!

  35. Neeld was sacked in June 2014 (this isn't a post to bash Neeld). You'd be right to describe the dees as a basket case. By October 2015, Melbourne would have to rank in the top half of the league in regards to stability. It's quite some achievement by PJ, first on board, and Roosy. There's a real plan and the adults are in charge.

  37. i have no problem with McCartney. I always found his pressers very interesting. He was trying to change the dogs culture. For that reason i would think Roos would be more than happy to work with him. Big differene between Senior Coach and Assistant/Development Coaches.

  38. I think where you are wrong is that you don't have the right expectations or understanding of what creates a successful football club. You've highlighted in there with all your examples. I don't necessarily agree with those contract extensions but when weighed up with where our list was at and how many picks we will take to the draft they make sense. You say Craig gave us nothing. What he actually did was give us a steadying presence by taking over for half a year, he also helped develop quite a few players and gave us some respectability when Neeld was running the place in to the ground. Craig had delisted Sellar at Adelaide, had barely played him. The recruiters wanted him and Craig only backed Sellar's character. Considering it was our last pick in a horribly compromised draft it wasn't much of a loss. Sellar gave us more than Tynan and Taggert that's for sure. Tall depth spuds like Tommy Walsh and Spangher were on Sydney's list when they won a flag. He was at Essendon for a year and players raved about him. Crameri quit Essendon to play for him. Mooney and Scarlett signed on in a flash to work for him then quit the day after he did. He's made Libba, Macrae, Stringer and Bontempelli look like future stars of the comp in their early years. I'm not going to claim we've signed some super savior. Not even Roos is that. But if we've signed McCartney for a development or assistants role where he can develop players then we will have done very well. You say he got lucky at Geelong. I'll say Geelong put the right people in the right jobs and that's why they got lucky as a club. Kenny Hinkley is obviously a great coach at working with attacking players and getting hard work and hard football out of them. It's why he was the perfect assistant for Geelong especially with their forwards. McCartney knows how to bring youngsters along developing them in to complete footballers so that's the job you get him for.

  39. I said it a bit earlier but basically my mum is friends with his wife and him. She knows nothing about footy and I tried to relay as much as i can remember her saying in the first post. She wouldn't lie to me, and I basically pried it out of her cos she didn't know the significance, and no one could lie like that with those details, and especially not her. It was all said to her during a night together out either friday or thursday. Nothing really more I can add. I was so excited I posted straight away. I'll never get another scoop, well maybe off Brendan hopefully So of course i'm a tad happy i actually got one. And stoked he is coming! I'm telling you exactly what I was told and it's all good

  40. This bit is such cringworthy to read by BP.. "There was a bit of pressure with No.11 and expectation that we would go tall with that pick because it was seen as a pretty big need," he said. "Gysberts probably wasn't really rated that highly in the industry, and maybe a lot of people were surprised at the time. "He didn't have a great under-18s carnival but when you looked at his skill set, I honestly believed that he has the potential to be the equal of Jack and Tom. Then why the FK would you use pick 11 on him!? if he wasn't so highly rated then surely they could have waited till pick 18 or 2nd rounder aswell.!
