  1. Just took a well deserved break at work to listen to Roosy. Here's a light summary of what I heard and my interpretations: -It sounds as though Roos is the perfect blend of nurturing but hard. He spoke about the players confidence with KB, about how the early days down there were really about chatting to the players as a mate, doing weights with them and so on to gauge their self esteem and confidence levels. Since then he's been building them with each player and spoke about how over the preseason and next year he'll apply more pressure to them. -KB asked about a mark for the season. Roosy explained how they didn't have KPI's in terms of wins (heard this before) but that they were aiming to be competitive, which has definitely been achieved. Mentioned that he was a bit disappointed that we'd dropped off since about round 15 but consistency before that was great. -KB met Watts and Jones at a function recently, was extremely impressed with the way they represented the club. -KB mentioned the J. Cameron rumor and this was an interesting one. What was said will probably be interpreted differently by each person but I think Roosy aptly avoided the question. He went into a discussion about people are constantly talking to players management (etc) but his definitive statement seemed to be 'I'm not aware of any contact, direct or indirect'. My sentiment after hearing this is that we have been in contact with him. -KB asked about Frawley. Roosy basically just said that he 'doesn't know' and said that Chip himself 'doesn't know'. He did go on to discuss free agency and the system in the NRL, more so about players continuing to play for a club after signing with another. His final statement here was along the lines of 'player should be invested in the club 100%, if not may as well leave'. I thought this was interesting. -Spoke about the 3rd year at the Demons. Said he hasn't thought about it too much, which sounded genuine. If provided with a deadline for a decision he said he'd sit down with the family and discuss it but at this point I believe personally that a third year is a given. - He then went on to discuss Cameron Ling vs Malthouse (lost interest a bit) and the aesthetics of the game these days. His opinion was along the lines of - talent spread thinly due to so many teams, players that definitely wouldn't have got a game twenty years ago are playing these days. Hope that helps!

  2. He should go into politics, he can waffle on for a good 5 minutes without actually saying anything.

  3. Thanks for the summary! The bold point is interesting. I was speaking to one of the players at the preseason function and asked him about the biggest difference between 2013 and 14 coaching set ups and he said the current really "Get around us" and that while the training was tough, the vibe was a lot more relaxed than before. I also remember roosy working the room with the sponsors and such, but every time he passed wattsy he would squeeze his Jack's shoulders and keep moving. This must have happened 5+ times. It was probably just Roos sharing a bit of banter with his boys, but I felt it was almost way of pumping up Wattsy. Maybe he felt that after years of scrutiny and pressure by everyone, Jack needed a bit of love.

  4. That's an interesting point. However i think the other issue is these days kids play a broader range of sports and AFL does not have the same monopoly over elite athletes. My young fella is a good example. Took a year off footy to concentrate on basketball, but now wants to play soccer instead of aussie rules. For this reason the academies are crucial and it is why Eddie is dead wrong. The gamble is that we can convert athletes in the northern states that might otherwise play say rugby to aussie rules. If we can't then 18 teams is too many an standards will (and have) fall away.

  5. Covered most of the same subjects as the Tuesday presser on Club website On extending for 3rd year, still hasn't been asked for a decision Ling/Kirk etc - going to find out who is available and interested and go from there, still believes you need to serve an apprenticeship Frawley - wouldn't play him if Chip told him he had signed with another club today Said because of 18 teams, there are some players, who are AFL players, but wouldn't necessarily get a game 20 years ago, in other words the real talend is spread too thin On the Academies, said the Clubs involved are only doing what the AFL allows them to do

  8. Cameron and Hogan for the next 10 years.... I could live with that. I would still hope we re-inforced the midfield as it's no good getting talent up forward if we can't actually get it down there.

  13. If GWS were crazy enough to trade Cameron and Shiel for picks 3 and 4, it would be a massive steal for us.

  14. I reckon he gets a game because he (like Bail) runs his guts out both ways, which as we all know his a pre requisite to be selected in a Roos team. As is doing what he is told and playing his role (see his comments about Watts). Jones does his job.

  15. The AFL must create a max contract rule ASAP and i am surprised it has not happened sooner after the Buddy Fiasco of last year. Only thing i can think the AFLPA would be saying no to this possibility? I would say a max contract length of 5 years would be sufficient and accepted? Cant see any Vic based club offer the requested 7 years, i think both QLD clubs and GWS will be pushing heaven and earth to get him. All in need of a KPD, GWS more than GC and Lions obviously. Saying that, GC are closer to instant success than GWS and Brisbane and the location is and will always be miles ahead. I think it will be Gold Coast if he leaves.

  17. Getting 45,000 to a domestic soccer fixture would've been laughed at 20 years ago. You'd have to have serious blinkers on to not be aware of the inroads soccer has made and continues to make.

  22. Cross was an exception, we don't need to have a discussion on every 30+ aged player that's near the end. People have mentioned judd, maxwell, o'keefe. Cross was a one off, who's body was in exceptional condition for someone his age and he is the perfect role model for the younger players.

  26. I wouldn't be surprised if Matt Jones is one of the first picked each week, he works his guts out and seems to play his role every single week, he provides a good bit of speed and run and can tackle, if he improves his disposal he would become a very complete player in my eyes

  27. Of course he'd have a big part in it - to be brutally honest, the only real attraction of a player coming to the MFC at this stage aside from money is being under the coaching of Paul Roos. But he's not going to come out on radio about how he's been heavily involved in chatting to Cameron. He'll say something along the lines of 'I'm not really aware of any contact' (which is what he said), which is basically diverting the question. We'd be crazy to be not pursuing any contact with Cameron.

  28. I think Kent can be a line breaker but at the moment only in patches, not for a full game. Matt Jones hasn't missed a game since he started. That's a fair effort. If he could improve his disposal, though, he'd become a much more damaging player.

  29. Jones is the only outstanding line breaker we have at the moment, too. He gets the ball and runs hard, takes the game on. There aren't many others who are doing this at the moment, hence our slow, stagnant ball movement.

  30. My point was that none of us know what it takes to be an AFL coach, we are all guessing at what it takes. Yes many have coached at junior levels but that does not compare to the highest level. Just because you have done an apprenticeship under a great coach does not mean you will be a great head coach. I am sure of one thing, none of us truly know what goes on behind closed door of an AFL club so stop pretending you do. And the spelling mistake in my name, really? How very grown up of you Ethan, bet you were so proud of it.

  31. Said still sorting out the playing list, pleased with Watts, some of the young players got a name check, but still a long way to go Pushing the line about the Coaches can provide some uselful infput to the AFL, ie should be regular Dinner with Gill Acknowledged still a lot of work to do with the team Think that's about it, try a question and will see if he covered it, the Club should be putting on the website as long as they get permission from SEN

  32. You have to pay between 95% (was raised from 92.5% a couple of years ago) and 100% of the salary cap each year. The salary cap is set to be $10.071 million in 2015, this includes all guaranteed base payments and any performance incentives (games played and other KPI's) for the 40 main list players and the 4-6 rookie list players. For each veteran on your list (10+ years) you get an extra 1.23% (~$115,000) on the salary cap and there are concessions available for the inclusion of rookie players (up to 50% of a players wage) based on the number of rookies you have. They average wage for a current AFL player is approx $230,000. They are set to introduce a new rule stating that if a team pays under the salary cap for 2 consecutive years, they can then pay overs in the following year equivalent to the amount not spent or 5% - eg. you spend 98% 2 years in a row you can spend 104% in the third year, you spend 95% 2 years in a row you can spend 105%. This has been introduced to make lower teams more competitive in FA, as they can throw more money at players if they haven't paid the full salary cap in previous years. Players who have been taken in the National or Rookie drafts and who have not played AFL before are on guaranteed contracts with the $ value set by the AFL, based on where you are taken in the draft. Players in the first 2 years also have pretty decent KPI's based on games played (approx $2,500 per game played) allowing them to earn very good money ($150,000+) in their second year. There are a large number of variables involved with player contracts (such as performance payments and trigger clauses), however to simplify it players are given a set amount over a set period of years (the numbers reported in papers are generally based on the player achieving all KPI's). For example, Mitch Clark was reportedly on 750-800k, this included approx 100-150k based on him playing a set number of games, as he didn't play the required amount he will be paid approx 600-650k this year. The list manager does a bunch of calculations on how likely it is that players will hit their KPI's, after this they will have a rough idea of what the Total Player Payments are and how much $$ we will have left to play with. You have to pay the minimum cap of 95%, if after KPI's have been taken in to account there is $$ left, they will typically look to front/ back end a contract, paying a player a larger amount this year (and lesser amounts in subsequent years) to ensure that we meet the minimum payments, eg. in 2011 we had a pretty turd list and needed to front-end a large amount of cash to make the minimum payment, James Frawley signed a new 4 year deal and had a fair chunk of it front loaded in the first year to ensure we met the cap. Hopefully that's gives you a basic overview of the salary cap/ list management.

  34. I agree, I reckon Treloar is about to stamp himself as one of the best mids in the game, i reckon Shiel looks a really good player as well, would happily part with picks 3, 4 to pick up those two, offer 600k per year each and see just how loyal they are.

  36. Think there was always questions over his kicking, which was a contributor to his going so late in the draft. I always thought he and the team played pretty well within his limitations, especially at his best. I think as our team improves, it'll surprise some people how all the poor kicks suddenly don't seem so bad.

  37. So instead of wearing our dark navy home guernsey which clashes with some teams, we'll wear this dark navy away guernsey which clashes with the same teams? Sounds like a sensible new development in the clash strip debate.

  43. Machsy said this( - I can't do "quote" from two different pages of the thread): Yeah, well if that's how you see it then... But it's not the way it is in reality. My point is, how you see it is your right, how he sees it is his right - but your thinking it does not make it "reality": it's just your opinion. And so, you cannot declare him a simpleton just because his opinion was different to yours.... in fact, if we want to sling around the simpleton tag on a site like this, maybe the biggest simpleton is the one who thinks his is the only opinion worth listening to. None of us here are in a position to claim an exclusive alignment with reality, are we? [Exit onto the Southern wing]

  45. For crying out loud ... Carl Lewis won 9 Olympic gold Medals and 8 world championships in the 100m, 200m and long jump. He attributes a vegan diet to his highest levels of performance at the peak of his career in 1991. That huge actor in The Green Mile, Michael Clarke Duncan, was nearly 200cm and 145 kg and a vegetarian. So much for 'frailty'. Staying lean can actually be a problem for some vegans if they eat too many carbohydrate-rich food sources such as legumes, soy and grains in an effort to get enough protein, because they can cause weight gain. I'm not a vegan, but at least those rabbiting on about 'weakness' could do some dietary research rather than speaking from a position of total ignorance.

  46. Mike Tyson is a vegan, even though he did bite a guys ear off. so is Joe Namath (legendary quarterback NFL), Carl Louis, Robert Parish (NBA), Tony Gonzalez (NFL) and Peter Siddle if you haven't heard of them, get out of the football fish bowl and look them up. All famous vegetarian athletes and all big guys. Eating meat has absolutely nothing to do with size and strength.

  47. If Jack Grimes is our major concern we don't have much to worry about. Reckon every other AFL side would love to have him on their list. One of the few players who can constantly win one on ones, has grunt, has size and ,has shown growing maturity as leader, yet many on here want to keep give him a belting. Seems like a great Melbourne bloke to me. Clearly I don't get it.

  48. Look at the generation that grew up through the mid to late 80s. You will find a large percentage of them are Blues, Bombers and Hawks fans. Nth will have a lot of fans who were in primary school in the late 90s, etc etc You older folk probaly remember all the Demons and Magpies fans in the class room during the early 60s. Forget Casey , just get some decent players and start putting the red and blue back on prime time TV.
