  4. I was at the game and these were the four who stood out to me as well. We bemoan our inability to develop our players and quite rightly but Garland has genuinely stepped up into elite territory. I had a very enjoyable night highlighting every one of Spencer's positive contributions. Gawn is going to be a star but Spencer right now is twice the ruckman. Giving Ablett a hard time was priceless. Kent makes mistakes but he is made of the right stuff and Viney again lived up to the hype. His endeavour is infectious. Nathan Jones thinks his way through tight situations really well these days and his kicking has become efficient. I'm bemused by those who continue to ride the Watts rollercoaster. The on him one week, off him the next brigade need to get their heads around the type of player we've got on our hands here. Last night was a classic example. When we win enough ball Watts will have the opportunities to show off his undeniable skills but even against Gold Coast there were numerous times where he fails to run to the right places when he doesn't have the ball. He guards space where space doesn't need to be guarded and continues to disappoint in aerial contests when he needs to impact physically. His kicking under pressure and ability to think his way out of difficult situations deep in defence is really impressive and obviously his ability to hit the scoreboard when forward is pleasing but he still has his flaws. As a consequence he's going to remain frustrating to watch, ridiculously inconsistent and an absolute tease for many years to come. Calling him a superstar one week and throwing his name up for trade the next is pointless. He is what he is but he is getting better. I walked away feeling really frustrated last night. We should have won. We blew too many chances. We didn't have the necessary belief when it mattered and the umpires were very average. But then I remembered how long it had been since I'd actively committed to a game emotionally for the entire four quarters driven by a feeling that we could actually win. It's nice to be feeling down about losing and not down about the epic proportions of the loss.

  5. I suggest you watch Neil Craig's presser where he praises Davis's ability to compete in the air. Watts doesn't do this. Watts is not a key forward and those that are disappointed about this should just get over it. We actually don't want him to be a key forward given our list. When GC looked good it was Watts who held them up. Take him away from the back line last night and we'd have been beaten badly. Soft as butter? Wow. He just kept getting the ball and usually used it pretty well. I laugh when I see the knocks on McKenzie and his kicking. There is hardly a voice of support for him on this site that I've noticed but he comes back in and suddenly our stoppage work is much better. He and Viney are very important because when they are there they offer Jones some support. McKenzie's goal from outside 50 showed he can kick. McKenzie often gets the ball in contested situations in the company of the oppositions best mid. That's why he sometimes misses targets. He's not a great kick but he's much better than he's given credit for and he's an important part of our team.

  6. I was there last night, so I'm not really sure how it was presented on TV---what narative was spun by the commentators---but I can say, at least for my part, that the match was a positive experience. We used the ball well for most of the match, EXCEPT in front of goal, which ultimately cost us the game, in my opinion. We showed some real heart for a lot of the match---the number of spot fires on the field was more than I've seen at any other match, and this, I'm guessing, wouldn't have been represented on TV: for a team that is considered to be lacking passion, there were a few punches thrown and blokes backing up their teammates (even the much maligned J Watts had a dig). I left the match ultimately hopeful. I remember saying a couple of years ago (2011 I think) that Jack Watts' errors aren't thinking errors, but silly skill errors caused by lack of confidence. This, I believe, is what really undoes our team: the lack of confidence of the players in their own abilities, and that of their teammates. People are unwilling to, for example, run the ball themselves, but instead kick it to a 2/1 or 3/1 contest to our disadvantage. There are numerous occasions last night where players, finding themselves with the ball, handballed it to another teammate as under the pump as them. I believe that we have a skilled team, but one that is too afraid to put those skills into practice. I said that I was hopeful, and there are two reasons for this. First, players like Terlich, Kent, Clisby, Davis (who player rather well for his first), who have few games between them, aren't the most skilled players (at the moment!), but their passion and commitment to the team, I believe, far outweighs that of more senior players. Sure, they make stupid errors, but the astonishing thing in the context of this team at this time is that they don't drop their heads, they just keep chasing the ball, at the very least, not gifting it to the other team without effort. This attitude in the young players is what needs to be fostered by the next coach, and I believe that if it is, we will see a vast improvement in a very short space of time. Second, being a QLD demon, I don't often see other Melbourne supporters. Last night was a positive experience from that standpoint. That the Melbourne faithful would turn up this deep into what many are calling the worst season of all time, and yell passionately, is a testament to this club's supporter base. The GC supporters clearly far outweighed us, but we were, for the most part, just as loud, just as belligerent, just as passionate in our small numbers as they were en masse.

  9. What I dont understand about the whole crap about Essendon is that their objectives have been obvious from the start I.e. their intention has been to get an advantage by providing chemical inducements to their advantage. If this happened in 2012, medical advice is that the advantage would continue in terms of players' physical development for several years including the 2013 final series. How could they possibly claim 2013 is clean with them participating in the series. To be frank they cant. Their season is finished -or at least it should be. The best analogy I can see for Hird is that he is the Stuart O'Grady off the AFL - a brilliant public image, but fundamentally a cheat. Such a pity for such an attractive personality to be seen to be so flawed.q

  11. You are a real keyboard hero pal. The investigation was centred around Tanking and you know it. The CC Vault comment came out in about October after the investigation was going nowhere and a certain ex employee lagged on the club, volunteering the info about CC's comment. It hadn't been discussed up until then. That was told to me by someone who read every word of the report and was involved with our defence. So CC on his own gets rid of Junior did he? Junior was 34 and had massive problems with injury and CC is the only one in the club that wants him to retire. Not the list manager, not the coach, not the assistant Coaches, only CC. Why don't you make the same remark about everyone who got rid of any good MFC player who was at the end of his career. And you know CC has got a two year payout from the AFL do you? Yes CC is a mate of mine. At least I have some. Who would want to try and do anything to help this club with supporters like you?

  12. No I think you should be ashamed of yourself. That post is a f'n disgrace. This bloke played for the club, gave his all and came back to try and get success for us. He did his best. Was moved to the marketing side where he helped raise a lot of money and interest in the club by speaking to groups of kids at schools, supporters, possible supporters etc. He then took the fall for the club, over tanking, which he was not the only one involved. He has not complained. His career has been tarnished. His life has been affected. Everything he did, he did for his club. You want his Life Membership cancelled and you call him a disgrace. Mate YOU ARE A DISGRACE and you owe him an apology.

  17. Rubbish. You shouldn't be attacking the person trying to fix an issue, but should be attacking the person that created the issue. But heaven forbid someone accuses the players or anyone else not associated with Neeld. If you ever see Misson have a chat with him. Last time I saw him I asked how the program was going and he was brutally honest. The players don't have enough endurance and aren't physically up to standard. Makes it very difficult to fix this as all the improvement has to come from the preseason and if you don't balance weights and endurance well you'll end up like Essendon last year which will also impact their ability to improve their skills during the season.

  18. Byrnes is a total waste of space for us. Every possession is a turnover. Every shot at goal is a miss. 1.5 and several other misses that went out. I just don't get why he gets a game. If Craig wanted to win the game then he has no chance of getting the coaching gig. To leave Watts behind the ball especially in the last quarter when the Suns were out on their feet was a joke. He should have been up forward. He had already kicked two and was the only one likely to score. If anything Davis could have played further up the ground. Why do you play defensive when you are a few goals behind and there is about 12 minutes to play. I thought the idea was to win the game. I know one thing for sure, we are the worst skilled side in the AFL and probably the dumbest. The turnovers and missed set shots, gifted the game to the Suns tonight.

  19. Similar to my doomed if Spencer gets more weeks than Simpkin thread I'm buttering up again. Clisby at one staged was wrestling with his opponent and suplexed some GC clown and dislocated his shoulder. It was a great display of aggression and something I'd like to see more of. I'm not convinced it was a reportable offense. On the other hand after being legitimately tackled the d bag that is Campbell Brown threw out a stray leg right into James Strauss' face and broke his nose. Tony Shaw (who employed him FFS) could see nothing more than an accident but to anyone not born yesterday if you throw a leg into a blokes fact that's pretty clear cut. Unfortunately the MRP are going about as well as the DRS but we wait with baited breath. Thoughts?

  20. Well I will be candid! This whole year of football nonsense is due to the football club called Essendon. They are the ones who have brought this on and should not be complaining about the wall of shyte coming their way. This football club and its arrogance need to be put back in their box. It is this football club that has brought our game into disrepute. So to those at bummer land shut the [censored] up and take your medicine. The rest of the football world has had a gutful of your arrogance and blameless attitude to what is a problem totally ignited from within your own engine room.

  27. There are four big positives from this season and all were evident again tonight. 1) Colin Garland has become an elite defender. Picked up Ablett when he rested forward and really annoyed him. 2) Jake Spencer is now a player - it's not just that he works hard around ground, it's because unlike Jamar and Gawn, his hitouts actually find a target quite often (34% tonight from 41 hitouts). 3) Jack Viney - for obvious reasons. He had 24 disposals tonight and if Davis hadn't wiped him out in a marking contest he probably would have got 30. 4) Dean Kent - we needed a small goalscoring forward who tackles and has pace. We drafted Byrnes for the role, but got really lucky and ended up with Kent at pick 50 or whatever who is a long-term proposition. He still hasn't cracked 20 disposals in a game yet I don't think but he had 19 tonight. You could probably add a fifth positive in Jack Fitzpatrick saving his AFL career in the past seven games - a very handy back-up for Mitch Clark next season. The Jordie haters need to take a step back this week too - did a great job on Ablett. Jack Watts was very classy again, if only he could tackle, then we'd all get off his back.

  30. Big woop, he got chances? You have seen our side this year, right? And you've seen how we've fared for small forwards in the last 4 years? It is "big woop". Up until this match Byrnes had kicked 11.5, including 3.1 against GWS. He has kicked 111.88 for his career. I'm not "kissing his ass" or declaring him the second coming of Christ, but he is a decent small forward, who creates opportunities to score, usually kicks more goals than points, and clearly had an off day. He certainly isn't the devil incarnate as is being made out by you and others.

This week: Jack Viney (again in a losing team) 7 kicks 17 handballs 24 disposals 2 marks 1 tackle ... in a game where G Ablett Jr had only 19 touches. Is there anyone else in the running?

  33. It is annoying there are still so many in denail that we did not tank. We did and it is no use in clouding it in legal gobbledegook to pretend we didn't and try to rewrite history. The matter was resolved in house wisely and we were stone cold guilty because we coughed up the fine and people were suspended. The other big losers for the monumental errors of CS and CC beside ourselves are all the lawyers and QC'c who missed out on big legal fees. The head in the sand and victim mentality still lives with some supporters at this club despite many changes for the better recently.

The year is finished (In practical terms) and has been a shocker for all involved inside and outside the club. Everyone just needs to take a deep breath and see what pans out in the coach/trade stakes. Bex anyone?

  42. 6 - Jordie McKenzie - First game back and smashed the greatest player of the modern era who was also plauying his 250th Amazing effort. 5 - Jack Viney - Bled for the jumper and impacted every contest, 24 touches and 8 clearances. Hard to believe he just turned 19. 4 - Nathan Jones - typical Jones game 3 - Jack Watts - 21 touches and 2 goals. On the verge of becoming a dominant player (hopefully at the MFC)2 2 - Colin Garland - fantastic season continues 1 - Jake Spencer - 41 hitouts and gave the midfielders great service

  43. Are you serious? Are you suggesting we didn't try? If we had of kicked 7.3 instead of 3.7 and a few out of bounds from our set shots we would have won. Kent kicked 2.4, Byrnes Kicked 1.5, Grimes missed from 20m, Tapscott missed a couple , Fitzy missed from 20 out right in front. We also turned the ball over again horribly. Lastly our best goal chance Watts who had 2 already was then played back for the rest of the game. Did you watch the game tonight? I am positive everyone else who saw the game would agree with me. You are suggesting we didn't try because we didn't take the AFL to Court early this year. Gee, unbelievable. How can you possibly say we didn't try tonight?

  45. Can't agree with the Byrnes hatred. Yes, he missed his shots, but when was the last time one of our forwards had 6 scores? When was the last time we had a small forward capable of getting 6 scores? Sure, if he'd gone 5.1 we won the game, but he's hardly the only culprit. Personally I'm thrilled that he got that involved. Now all we need to do is get him to handball to players' hands instead of their feet.
