  3. I think what that means is that anyone who says anything at all positive about the MFC, is referred to in sports journalism circles, as a "Melbourne defender".

  4. I was at the game today and thought we pretty much looked the better side all day barring the last 5 minutes or so. They seemed to overuse the footy a bit where we were more direct but our pressure around the footy was a lot better than theirs. We still made some basic errors by foot and hand across half back that they created goals from but all in all there were some promising signs. Any questions, I'll try my best to answer although I admit I've had a couple.

  8. Why are there so many whingers on this forum??? The commentators are giving Melbourne a wrap saying that we are moving the ball well and putting on good pressure. It's just that they don't know our players names. Let up on the complaining for a change ! Turn off if you don't like it! Or even better some of the people that are on this forum could actually say something positive.

  20. Theres a very simple solution to this problem. ALL gate proceeds from EVERY game in the season, apart from the finals(should go to the finals clubs), are taken by the AFL . at the end of the year the AFL divides the total gate receipts by 18 and gives each club its even share. That way the AFL can continue to base fixturing around maximising the number of "blockbuster" games without the less successful clubs missing out financially. The clubs get their cash, the AFL get a more even comp, and the TV gets their "blockbusters". There it is .

  21. If it can't be found I vote the club gives her a brand new one with the entire list signed and throw in a couple of legends like Gary and Ox, and present it to her on the ground round 1.

  35. Goal to Davey. Apparently "Melbourne got one that they ... probably shouldn't have." If it were a Port player, it would have most certainly been goal of the day #4.

  36. Im going to fly to adelaide next week and smack this [censored] in the face swear to god every time they kick a goal its like theyve run from full back untouched kicked a torpedo from the centre square facing backwards over his head.

  37. I just find it amusing. Letting their bias annoy you would do your head in.

  38. Seriously, people here are getting upset over nothing. Sure the commentary is extremely biased, but there had been 4 or 5 pages of preamble on this thread that had established that that would be the case... so no surprises there. The way I treat it is to get excited every time that the commentary quietens down. And to say that they have said something good about Davey only is nonsense... I have heard a few complimentary comments directed at other players and to our forward line pressure generally.

  44. If I only ever said positive things about Watts most people would be very happy. People love to hear positive views. If you say what you believe and they happen to be negative most people hate it. They're still just "opinions", which by themselves mean nothing, especially from an internet nuffie, but many people just want to read the good stuff. Fwiw, I don't believe I'm harsh on Watts. Let's make a list. 1. Is he a failed forward - yes 2. Is he timid in the air in a contested situation - yes 3. Does he hit the body hard enough, or spoil hard enough in the back-line - no. In fact sometimes he makes no contact when he needed to 4. Is he aggressive - no 5. Is he fast - yes 6. Is he a beautiful kick - yes 7. Is he a good decision maker - yes 8. Is he agile - yes 9. Is he good on his non preferred side - yes 10. Is he sublimely skilled for a tall - yes 11. Is he a good shot at goal - yes 12 Are there queries about his ability to really stand up in a hot final given some of the queries re his footy DNA - yes Put simply, many would agree with most, if not all of the above, but some may query the importance of some of the above. They may not put the same weight on things I do. There are some players I'd love to run out with in a grand final. Some players that you know who'd die for the chance of victory. I wouldn't want to be running out alongside Jack Watts. I judge footballers on certain parameters and unfortunately he fails the ones I hold dearest. I understand what supporters see in him, I understand supporters love highly skilled players and I understand why some supporters loathe me and my views. I truly "get it". But I don't care. I have virtually no time for him as a footballer. And I can't see that changing. If he was able to completely change my view by his actions on the footy field there would be no-one happier than me. I'll at least refrain from commenting on him until the season proper. NOTE: the last sentence will be possibly quoted and certainly relished by most. You lot are easy to read.

  45. OK so we've got Gardner, the former president talking to the media and throwing the club under a bus over tanking and we've got Mick Coglin going to the media with a complaint about Jimma instead of dealing with it in house. As for some others, you really don't get around much, do you?I would expect former board members to respond better when questioned about an issue like tanking (which has the potential to cause damage to the club in terms of monetary sanctions, loss of jobs to employees and loss of draft picks) comes up with a no comment. People ask why Carlton or Richmond aren't being investigated. Well perhaps it's due to the fact that, at such times you stick fat with the club. Jack Elliott and Ian Collins never said anything publicly about tanking. If he has to say anything, this is how I expect a former club chairman to discuss his club (and I wish him well in his battle with cancer) - Former Essendon chairman Graeme McMahon slams AFL drug policy as 'hypocritical'. And you ask who you should trust?

  46. The problem with only addressing the issues in the fixture with monetary compensation is that it is only a band-aid solution to what is really a long-term problem. You can throw a few million at us, North, Dogs etc and keep giving us home games in poor time slots against teams no-one wants to watch but that will only keep us barely afloat and beholden to those who "compensate" us (as is happening now). The real need is to make the fixture an even draw (many ways this could be done) so that there is transparency in who plays who and when & where they play. The reason being that without an even draw clubs may stay afloat through being compensated but they will never be able to grow their support base which is the bottom line of being able to improve the financial situation. There is also the knock-on effects of less sponsorship revenue, less corporate match-day revenue, less exposure to new supporters etc that the AFL policy on maximising attendances leads to. I've been saying for years that some of the smaller clubs should be forming a bloc within the AFL to challenge the financial heavyweights who dominate the league otherwise in time the big clubs will get sick of "propping up" the small clubs and we will go the way of South and Fitzroy i.e. relocated to new markets. It's all very well and good to say "let them stand on their own two feet" but it doesn't work if you first cut them off at the knees.

  47. Not really the place for politics Robbie but your conservative views on nearly every subject bore me to death. Your over simplistic presentation of fiscal issues is as tedious as the Liberal mantra "we will not raise interest rates" when in fact the raising and lowering of interest rates is set by the Reserve Bank. Successful Economic policy in Australian Fiscal matters has been lead by Keating and more recently Rudd/Swan. Your advocation of stringency during duress (GFC) would have been financial suicide for this country . The money in the coffers doesn't belong to Liberal or Labor mate ,and the spending of it is what keeps this society ticking or limping along ,as the case may be . It's not your private account that the reds are spending so relax .It belongs to us all . If you know something on the issue ,share it ,but don't parrot pathetic media grabs . I though you might have a little more to you than that .

  48. Slightly off topic but by way of demonstrating the decline in standards at Fairfax Media is the Real Footy Poll currently running in the Age: There are two options given - yes and no. To date, 53 people have voted and the yes vote is currently trailing the no vote by 26% to 74%. Thankfully, there is a disclaimer which tells us that these "polls are not scientific and reflect the opinion only of visitors who have chosen to participate". Almost on a par with Wilson's opinion that Melbourne had a good legal case against tanking but should be punished heavily anyway.

  49. In his favour is that he's only 22 years old, he's a goer, and he should be able to improve his disposal (probably more so his handballing skills) Every team needs a tagger or 2 and there are no other 'likely' candidates on our list. I read somewhere that Allan Jeans had a philosophy that if you win the tackles, you win the game. A lot on our list can't tackle very well. We shouldn't be at all concerned on whether he's going to 'good' player in a 'good' side yet. You need players to help you get there and we're miles off being a good side right now. If we improve, so might McKenzie. Apart from anything else, he's nowhere near our biggest issue. Right across the board, we need a truckload of improvement to be able to get into contention. I'm not being an apologist for Jordie - he, like many others on our list, needs to get a lot better.

  50. The criticism wasn't directed at the discussion of Tapscott. The criticism was leveled at the highly critical tone of the subject line. If you want a discussion about Tappy, just say "where do you think Tapscott's at?". The present headline is as biased as a Range Rover poll title.
