  1. Depending on how next year goes for Hardwick, he would have to be one of the stiffest coaches ever to lose his job at this stage. I really rate the way this guy coaches. I think he is their first good coach in many years.

  2. I'd take Jud and 2 Bartrams in our current position - we've got a number of very good players but we've always lacked stars. If O'Meara is rate equal with Judd I'd give what's necessary and if that's Scully picks + 12 then do it. Remember those mid first rounders might be Gysberts, Grimes and Frawler or they could be Jones, Bate.and Maric.

  6. Look, I think your wrong If you think that losing the Russian will transpire into slowing our progressive climb up the ladder over the next 4 Years. It would effect us a little next year, maybe One ladder spot or two Max. Burt Max Gawn will come on quicker with the resposibility and I would also try to grab Hille cheaply as he's slightly older than Mark and plays the forward role better. He would/could be our forward and our insurance. With Gawn and Martin/Fitz as 2nd ruck. If the Russian was willing to go to the Hawks, or Port (Boak) or Crows (Dangerfield or other) or GWS + comp pick+, for a 17Yr old. This would definitely pay off in the long run.

  7. First post so go easy. I'm not quite sure why there is a huge push by some to trade into the club older, relatively unsuccessful fringe kp players. If you take a longer view, we are travelling reasonably well in terms of developing kpp's. The key, surely, is giving them time. For instance, how can some possibly write off Lucas Cook at this stage. It's ludicrous. I have been down to Casey and, before he was injured Cook was moving well and looking threatening. What I would like to see is the club looking to bring in young mids with a little desperation and mongrel. Viney is exciting but the great sides always seem to have two or three that can rotate - think West Coast in their prime, Geelong, Hawks. It gives these sides a relentlessness that provides the psychological edge. Related to Swans Luke Parker, so incredibly biased but there's a kid who is ferocious with his attack on the ball. If we're going to go after someone make it along those lines.

  8. Trenners is a smart and hard-working footballer. He's as hard as nails with courage to match, has very solid skills (especially overhead marking) and shows maturity beyond his years and experience. He's a ripper and we are very lucky to have him. His loyalty is an added bonus. Fifth placing in the Bluey in only his second year was an exellent achievement. If he continues to develop as I expect, he will be a star and a leader at our Club.

  9. Does he really have the hunger? I think he did well at the pies (in the last two years) because he wanted to shove it up Eddie & Bux. Without that, what's he got to prove? Why climb the mountain all over again? I'm glad we have Neeld and not Malthouse.

  13. By my reckoning (with the help of footywire) he kicked 20 goals in games against Essendon (4), Fremantle (5), Richmond (3), Hawthorn (4), and Gold Coast (4). And then 17 goals in the other 16 games. And he only cracked 20 possies 3 times in 2011... But that isn't my gripe - we all know he can play good footy as his 2010 was superb (9 20+possie games, 9 three goal or more games), my gripe is with his pathetic body language and his seemingly lack of desire to do something as basic as the before game/half time rev up (Brent Moloney does it). And people may say "so what if he let's Brent do that?" and I would try to point out that in a team atmosphere like that, it is important for THE leader to be seen to be THE leader. Added to that is the embarrassing interviews after awful losses with nervous laughs and terrible little deflective jokes.

  14. This is like arguing which deckchair to sit in on the Titanic to listen to the band 'play on'... But I would have Bate's diffidence, 'continental drift'-like turning circle, and 'concrete' hands over Dunn's false bravado, jumper punching, and inconsistent effort.

  17. I don't think so - in our recent B and f 3 tall defenders finished in the top 6. Our ruckmen and 2 nd ruck finished 7th and 8th. We have McDonald (Tom) and Davis as young talls in development. Watts showed heaps this year. Cook is in development mode. We all know about Gawn. I'd say we're OK for talls, unless an absolute star presents. I think the midfield is the go.

  20. Received a text today from someone I believe to be a very good source - picked the Neeld appointment a week before it happened and has a good track record over the last couple of years. He has contacts in the betting industry. Anyway, the word he passed on to me is this: Lyon is absolutely all over O'Meara. GWS are interested only in picks. Lyon believes that there is significant natural improvement in our list as it stands and believes that we could dispense with pick 12 and one of the scully picks to land O'meara. Gold Coast want to give up pick 4 only, but may be prepared to also offer up their own compo pick as well, putting them ahead of us. If this happens, Lyon has suggested we throw in both compo picks and pick 12. This would mean 3 first round draft picks which obviously nobody could trump short of offering up a superstar - Pendlebury etc. Now, to me 3 first round picks sounds excessive, but Hawthorn did trade 2 first rounders for Burgoyne, and Geelong the same for Ottens (part of the Moloney deal). Obviously Carlton gave up Kennedy, plus early first and second round picks for Judd. So that's the sort of value we would be placing on O'Meara. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

  21. Get on him and throw everything at him! He is a true leader who sets incredibly high standards and is tough as nails. Everyone on the list would walk taller with him being around and he would be a fantastic captain for our club. For those who worry thinking that he will be thinking about our premiership window I ask do you people not think Judd thought the same thing? He went to Carlton I think in 2008 with their future A Grade stars at the following ages: Murphy 21, Gibbs 19 and Kruze 19. Very similar to our Watts, Trenners, Jurrah & Gys Next thing the blues are playing finals and this year one kick away from a preliminary. Ask any Cats fan also and they were a lot more comfortable playing the Eagles then the Blues after the cracker of a game they had during the year. I thought they also played well against Collingwood. If we are this close in three years time pushing for a flag Goddard will be 29... wow that seems soooo old!! I have a Saints mad family who all believe Goddard will leave. He looked dis-enchanted this year which had to be a direct result of their off season. He is an out and out star and I would be devastated if we didn't throw everything at him!!

  22. With all due respect to the Bluey and I certainly dont mean to dilute its importance you have to see it in context. Someone willl aways win it. Its a closed shop affair. Whom ever is deemed the best at the club gets teh points and accunulates his award etc. This only really serves to compare one to another within our own ranks and doesnt in any real shape or form hold them to an unadulterated and less forgiving ajudication. its the likes of A-A_, or the Brownlow, or other inustry awards that will see our players in some less 'rosey' light. In all reality to have only placed 10th and 11th repsectfully for Col and Brad is damning. Col could indeed aspire and place in the Brownlow, he is that good ( mainly in the potential) but so rarely puts much back to back, or indeed as 4 of 4 but should he ever, then gee-wizz what a player. But we've all visited this subject time and time again , so what does that in itself tell you ? Simply that he hasnt go tthere yet and its bloody well time he did. Good luck kid.

  23. Some of you need to get out and smell the fresh air. So let's not even talk to him then, FMD. Close the book, let's just keep on keeping on. I honestly don't know about supporters but I want a fracking flag before I'm pushing up daisy's ! If there is an avenue to be explored to improve our [censored] leadership within our club and fast track it, I want it F***'n explored. If I was Goddard I would probably prefer to remain a one club player, but I'm not F'ing B.Goddard ! B.Goddard seems to me to be a player looking after his future, but also mindful of wanting to be a Premiership player. Watching a former teammate in Luke Ball would do that to you. But if the choice was a very near downward spiralling list in St.Kilda who have just lost a popular coach and second to none fitness guru, or a trek to outback Falafel land and be well paid, or staying in Melbourne and be well paid and perhaps an equal chance of playing in a Premiership as it would among falafel when he's 31-32. I know what I'd choose - but I guess that's just me. Maybe there are better propositions around, I don't know. But I know our club offered a pretty good deal for T$ to stay and he has walked, so we have the coin to make a decent offer. BG would be aware of the changes off field we're making having opened the war chest. Throw in a carrot or two and see ! Make a move. Don't die wondering. Check the rumour file thread ( http://demonland.com/forums/index.php?/topic/28337-rumour-file/ ) created 3-4 weeks ago here by WJ. DW may already have......

  24. I would think Jamar plus a compo pick would go close. Maybe need some adjustment. I'd even look at adding another player as well as Jamar to our compensation pick.

  25. Not sure if many will agree with me but i wouldn't mind Lachie Hansen. I'd only be willing to give up our second round pick and a Maric or Warnock and no doubt North would want more. I just think in a new enviroment with the right coaching and some confidence he could develop into a good contested marking forward.

  26. He was only behind Davey in terms of output and leadership (although Davey is miles ahead for overall terrible output) Of this year's leadership group, the two vice captains came 1st and 2nd in the B&F, Jones came in top 5 and Grimes who barely played won the leadership award. The two glaring omissions were our two most senior leaders in Green and Davey. Now Davey was injured for much of the season and therefore was hardly going to figure in the votes (although that didn't stop Jamar or Frawley or Garland from polling well), but Green played all season and was woeful, and worst of all, his leadership was really lacking. Of course I think he should stay on in 2012 and I believe that he will, but it has to be on our terms, and it has to be without the leadership title.

  29. Just had a listen and to reinforce what HT alluded to I think Barry is looking at football ability as being the the number 1 , 2, and 3 aspects with all else as a indicator if appropriate. Im not really interested in whether a Melbourne player can feed the world, write an essay or wax lyrical about life goals etc etc.. I just want him to be able to kick a ball, that would be nice.

  31. I agree Robbie it is a lot easier to modify an over confident kid than it is to build one up when it is low. I have said this often before but the MFC could use a couple of brash ready to go next year types. You Know I do not care if their fathers is a member of "hells Angles" I just want someone who is tough and can play well.

  32. Might have to and I wouldn't hesitate and then some. O'Meara for Scully - it's a no-brainer. Sure GWS get a great deal but let's worry about us, not them.

  33. What worries me most about this stuff is the apparent significance placed on the "interview process" which seems to cover off things like family, schooling etc as well as football skill, talent, aspirations .. While character is no doubt important, successful groups are made up of a mixture of characters - leaders, followers, extroverts, introverts, inside players, rough diamonds etc etc - can't help but feel we focus overly on solid citizens and are a little quick to pass over thise who may create a challenge - the most obvious case being Juhn Butcher - just hope this new regime under MN has enough balls to back themselves to create an environment which caters to the best mix we can put together, not just the nicest.

  34. Future star for sure. The way he carried himself all through this year, from T$gate to tacklegat was sensational. A kid who we can all be really proud of as a committed MFC player.

  35. Lol at some of the spuds being suggested on this thread- who said Nason haha I almost choked on my chocolate milk! People we don't have to trade for trades sake. I want to trade for someone who will be worth it- and that doesn't include grandpa's who are over the hill and have only one good leg left (Lake). Discuss players who will make an impact and are available, or don't discuss any at all really.

  40. I would only have 1 wish outside of Melbourne getting the likes of Franklin, Hodge, Judd, etc. That would be Pendlebury going to GWS early, Trav Cloke deciding to walk and for the rest of the comp to pick the eyes out of the rest of the Pies carcass, leaving FIGJAM with absolutely nothing to work with and for the Filth to wollow in their own loser culture crapulence! That is all.

  42. Nathan Jones is non touchable, would we trade Frawley, Trengove, Garland? The answer would be a definite no, and Jones should be included in this group of non touchable trades. He is one of the ''grunts'' of the team and we never see him give up, not like some of our so called other very hot or very cold team members.
