MFC woes - main issue on KB show now

KB has opened up his show on the woes at MFC and he is tipping MFC as wooden spooners in 2008.

Greg Denham has MFC finishinh 8th. (How much more logical and measured than P Smith!!).

The thrust is how dissappointing the news of off field discretions is and how will impact negatively on efforts to pump up the 150th year.

Several callers also commented on how many players looked disinterested in last practice game. Greg commented that lot of commentators have "laughed off" the Dees for 2008 based on the lacklustre performances in preseason games -but he thinks will need to look at the teams perfomance in firts few real games. Noted that Col Sylvia no being thres for Rnd 1 against Hawks very disappointing as golden opportunity to get a win against them as he thinks they will be a top sied for newxt few years.

DB and CC and the new CEO are going to have big job in first half of 2008 to establish credibility of MFC for 2008 and beyond!

Thompson's head was placed on the chopping block, the passion of the cats was brought into question and everyone in the know accused the longwinded off season process taken by the cats in regards to their footy department/list management etc.

After round 5, that is, five rounds INTO the PREMIERSHIP season, Geelong were 10th on the ladder, the same position they occupied come round 22 the year before.

Now by no means am i claiming Melbournefc circa 08 to be the Geelong of 07, but surely supporters must stop reading so much into pre season talk shows in a non-football week or games that don't affect the season at all.

I'm definitely not pro-AFL, but after our recent record of CEO appointments, maybe the AFL is trying to protect us from ourselves. I don't mind the AFL's input into the appointment.

Whether you like it or not, the AFL is a successfully run organisation. We are not!

McNamee is a non-AFL person, so he's probably just doing his due diligence as to where the AFL stands in regards to the its expansion plans and how that will affect the MFC [directly or indirectly].

If you were in his shoes you'd be mad not to have a "fireside chat" with the AFL before accepting the role.

This is the most logical and coherent comparative analysis I've read on here in a while 45HG!! FWIW I agree completely. Too many people are pre-judging a season that hasn't even started. The "See I told you we were [censored]!" trophy is all ready adorning a few mantle pieces and we haven't played a serious game in anger.

We are in trouble, no questions about it. One thing the cats have is solid off field admin team, from Frank Costa, Brian Cook and they are making a whack of cash. We have the lowest membership in Vic by over 4000 members, lets say average membership costs $170, that means from Membership revenue alone we are $680,000 behind the second lowest club, and we are almost 6000 behind the Kangaroos or $1million less. That is big dollars and for what is meant to be a big year for the oldest sporting club in the world we are in trouble on those figures alone.

Also we have no CEO, we have lost our whole football department which had to be done, plus from all accounts most of our admin staff. Then our players the senior players have looked disinterested in the preseason games we have two young guns with off field discretions one touted as future captian with three or four issue over preseason the other just loves the party. A fullback that has played up over the summer months and we have been beaten badly in all our games to date.

The AFL is looking to add two teams, they might not have to, if we don't get our off field personal issues fixed, our on field performance and our membership numbers up the attention will be place on us and we could be the West Sydney Demons. In our 150th year if our club doesn't produce a profit the board should step aside.

that's a horrible idea... one comparison they made this morning was to collingwood last year, and they way they dealt with Alan Didak... while they heavily sanctioned Didak, he didn't miss a match, as this would've penalised the team...

by suspending Col they're not only penalising him, but they're also penalising the team, and that's something i don't agree with... i would've thought the fine, and some other type of sanction would've been appropriate, but let him play round one...

BTW, as a major stakeholder and funder in the MFC, the AFL does have a substantial interest in the performance of the Club.

Likewise given the extent of the financial contribution to MFC by the AFL and given the rather parlous state of the MFC finances it would only be sensible for a prospective candidate to meet with the AFL.

It's good practice when applying for any position to do as much research as possible on other organisations that you would be dealing with if you were offered the position.

Makes perfect sense to me. And I've only ever missed out on one position I have applied for here in Tassie - and that was due to political factors - ie I had [censored] off too many Labor politicians by pointing out their shortcomings. I'm sick of all this negativity.

Despite some of the poor off and on field issues that have come to light during the pre-season, I still feel that this has been a very positive summer for the MFC.

We finally made a move on the coaching department and we've got a whole new administration with a new CEO to come. We managed to clear our list substantially, got a good trade for an over-rated, lazy senior player, and we'll have nearly a full list to choose from come Round 1.

Things could be much, much worse.

I would love it if for once, Melbourne supporters weren't so hot and cold. Two months ago everyone was pumped, happy and excited about the season ahead. A couple of footballers behaving like dills and losses in insignificant practice matches, and all of a sudden the sky is falling.

How about we reassess our position in the middle of the season, instead of wrist-slashing, and bridge-jumping before the season has even begun.

Get behind the club and stop the constant whinging ffs!

Agreed Jaded. I have been guilty of such negativity over the past few weeks. May I suggest to you or anyone else we have a 'NEGATIVITY SWEAR JAR' on this site. Everytime someone posts something negative they pledge a certain amount of money to the MFC. Maybe 10 cents, 20 Cents, more, whatever. All money will go back to the football club. Alternatively, all the money can go to Andy and Nasher.

Jaded FYI in case you didnt hear him on SEN Greg Denham was quite strong on the Dees for 2008 and refreshingly made very sound and logical case for belief why he thinks MFC will finich about 8th based on talent on the list. Perhaps a bit more bullish than most Dee supporters for 2008. So was not all negative.

The point of my post was not to winge but to merely inform those who weren't able to listen at that time of the coverage. The main point was that news such as that regarding Col Sylvia was not helpful to MFC in its efforts to pump up the club membership and promote the 150th year. We should all be boasting unashamedly about the MFC at this time but as yet we have not been given much ammo to fire with. Hoping that is about to change.

The same concerns were raised last year when Daniher unveiled "runs and curry" against Hawthorn in the NAB Cup and look what happened with that.
