bruce our best player...

junior- 100% determination

brock mclean - cant play football.... but yer hes a great leader...

i think its deff between bruce and green

Don't worry about Brownlow Bruce, he took it quite bad when people were bagging Bruce about his kicking and since then has taken to bagging McLean at every chance as a petty way of trying to get back at those who bagged Bruce.

It seems to him that if he bags McLean it will make Bruce kick better or stop people picking on him.

And the fact pretty much everybody said Bruce is not a better choice of captain than Brock upset him too, and this was months ago. Like a dog with a bone, its still gnawing away.

Thanks for that.

I mentioned in another thread that Bruce is the most overrated players in the league so anyone who says he is our best player isn't worth wasting time with.

At least, in a game called Football, Brock can actually kick. And what does slow have to do with anything, if you can read the play. Bruce is a bloke who's comfortable with where he's got to in football. He's happy with his 400-500k per year and he's happy that he has it locked away for the next 2 years.

He is a player with class, but he is not a player who is prepared to put his body on the line for his club, like Brocky, Macca or Green.

For these reasons he is not Captain material.

Love everything about Brock, but one thing will hold him back--his lack of pace

Bruce is over-rated as he can't kick. He's hardly hit a target in the last 2 years. The looks on his face when he gets the opportunity to take a set shot reminds me of Daniel Motlop lining up for goal after the siren.

The he is soft. Hasn't gone for a hard ball since he hurt his shoulder a few years ago.

The ultimate downhill skier. who is not even close to being one of our best players.

And yet he's quicker than Bruce.

Pace won't hinder his career. He just won't be Judd.

id be very happy to trade bruce. hasn't been able to kick for 2 years and is soft as butter. cud be used for a trade for judd

Bruce is easily our best player. I cannot believe the short range memories of some of our anti Bruce posters. His silky skills and his ability to WIN the ball are always a delight to watch. We don't need ALL of our players to be like your namesake. After all, Rodney cost us a preliminary final against Hawthorn didn't he? Soft? Rubbish, have a look at the number of tackles he makes. BRUCE for captain!!

PS Don't get me wrong on Rodney, I liked his style but he did cost us dearly didn't he?

Yes Bobby, it was all Rod's fault. Not only did he waste quite a few easy opportunities for goal, he gave away a free kick too far outside for a score, he then grew a few inches and gave away a 15 meter penalty.

You are right, he cost us dearly.

You are also right, Bruce has silky skills, I've been saying on 'ology that he can't kick for 18 months, I was watching the wrong game.

Sure Bruce laid some tackles through the year, all of them forgettable. Did he make any tough ones that made us all sit up. Win his own ball? By running around in no mans land screaming "give it to me, give it to me".

bruce was leadin our hard ball gets for quite some time....

Was that the first 7 games?

When we averaged about 3 hardball gets a game?

Was he also leading our clangers then?

yer i think he was leading in every stat actually... except goals...

where was our future captain? injured again ? and people are worried about robbo being injury prone and not givin him a 3 year... about judd possibly finished due to injury

Rod, How many times does Bruce appear in our weekly best player list and leading possessions? Many if you would care to admit. Soft? Ask the mighty Brad Johnson if he was 'soft' when Bruce thrashed him in the return game against the Bullies last year. Back to Rodney, IF he hadn't given away that free kick Jimmy would never have had the misfortune of giving away the 15 metre penalty. And Buckenara may have been within range before the penalty. We will never know. Remember too mate, that sarcasm is the lowest form of wit! You might also do some damage to your eyes with all that rolling!

The free was an attempt to stop an easy mark...

The papers say Bruce was in the best so he must be....

Bruce is a versatile footballer, something I've always given him credit for. How many hard ball gets did he get against Johnson though?

His atrocious footskills though stop him from being a good footballer IMO.

At least the paper reporters giving their best players are giving an UNBIASED opinion. Sadly, you seem to be very anti Bruce and I reckon if you looked at his endurance rate you would have to admit that he is also one of the fittest guys in the comp. He simply runs his guts out week in and week out. Admit it Rod he gave Johnson a complete bath and I don't see what your question," How many hard ball gets did he get?" had anything to do with his performance that day. I'm not making comparisons here but the great Robbie Flower was not noted for so called, 'hard ball gets'. He was all class. Ronald Dale however was noted for his hard ball gets as was one Rodney Grinter. Last year I listed my top 50 MFC players of my time ( 1948-2006) and Bruce was one of them. I don't remember getting any criticisms on my choosing him.

I'm not denying that he gave Johnson a bath. I was a fan of his too in the past.

During the season I only visit one board most of the time, that's demonology for me where I post as Korean Demon. So sorry if I missed your thread. That said, we haven't had many good players in the last 43 years and I wonder if many outside of your top 10 would have made it onto equivalent lists of teams that have been succesful in that period.

Last year I was critical of Bruce kicking from early in the year and copped it from many posters. This year many are singing the same tune. I may be biased, I see Bruce as a highly over-rated footballer who regularly goes missing when the team is down, who gets few hardball gets since his injury and who struggle to hit a target more than Godfrey.

I'm biased as I think his best value to the team is trade bait because he has lost his ability to kick. He either re-learns the art and put his body on the line like Green has learnt how to or he is a waste of space on our list.

Maybe though, I'm not the biased one and it's you who is holding him in a higher regard than his ability justifies due to his past deeds.

Bruse is not soft, i do not think he is as hard as others but when he must throw himself in he does, but unlike a jones who throws himself in any time there is half an opportunity.

Bruce's kicking in the last season and a bit has been average, but that can be fixed and should be if we had half decent coaching staff, who pointed out his drop of the football is all wrong.

It will be interesting to see who Bailey choose's, as he will do so with an outsiders point of view, my preference would be brock, but agree i'd like to see him have an injury free year. I think Green and Jmac have the front running.

give the captiancy to jones from 2008 until he retires in 2030. he showed true leadership ie goning hard all game even if we were 30+ points down.

If you want an in-game example of why Bruce should not be captain, go back to us vs the Aints in Rd 1 this year. Bruce took a mark on the defensive goal line, between the goal and behind posts. He went back and took his kick, and kicked the aggot straight into the behind post. I don't understand how an AFL footballer can manage that. Not only is it rancid kicking skill, it's also a total lack of concentration and/or application.

I don't know if thats a good enough reason by itself, but it was quite amusing, looking back... At the time it was head in hands stuff.

which resulted in him gettin the ball straight back ... because it was not brought back into play.... and he was probly the only player who knew he got the kick back... every one else was puzzled including the umpire

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
