I am not interested in getting one star player at the risk of stuffing up our list and future. Clearly pick 4 will be gone and that will cost us a potential topline player who may have 12-14 years ahead of him. If we clear Robbo and another fringe player to the Dogs for pick 5, it should be retained. If CJ wishes to return home and WCE want him he can be part of the deal. That would mean that another player or pick 21 will go. As long as we can live with the player leaving that is OK but I would not clear another young player with a future like Frawley/Jones etc.

Probably one thing that will help us is a good ( as far as it goes) history with dealing with the WCE. I cant see it being protracted or anyone really hanging by their toenails in this. Both parties know the other, both know the 'reality' of whats on offer etc.. Should Judd select us it wil be all over inside 24 hours. Too much other business to get caught up in the minutae !!

id trade pick 4 and Johnstone for Judd.

i think this is a reasonable deal bc WCE get a quality midfield replacement for Judd who will slot into their starting 18 for sure, and pick 4 they can pick up a promising WesternAustralian (Palmer,Morton, Masten etc.).

however we are by FFFAAAAAARRR the winners out of this deal.

pick 4 could be a great player, but will 99% be half the player Judd is.

Johnstone is quality. what he can do with the football is genuis and few players can change a game like he can.

however, he is 27 years old, and in his entire career at MFC he has come in our top 10 in the b&f only ONCE!!!!!!! honestly how pathetic is that for a player of his quality. his career at the demons has been far too inconsistent.

while he still has shitloads to offer any afl club, would love to see Judd at the demons much more than seeing johnstone and pick4 go.

MFC have not had a player in the top bracket of the afl since flower and being 20yrs old ive never seen us have a player in the top 10 players in the afl.

here we have an opportunity to get the best player in the league.

we will get huge sponsors, membership and merchandize with him at the club which will outweigh any costs involved to get him.

imagine a midfield with Judd, Mclean, Sylvia, Jones, Bartram, Moloney, Green, Bruce, McDonald, Dunn, Buckley and possible Bate. Considering this year we didnt have Mclean,Sylvia, Bartram, Moloney fully fit with full preseasons behind them at any stage this year, Judd makes our midfield look top quality.

a) would you prefer to have Judd

B) or would you prefer to have the 2 top10 picks. In this draft, that could mean Henderson AND Rance (setting up our spine for years to come) or Morton AND McEvoy (adding a super midfielder and solving our ruck problems)...basically 2 top10 picks in this draft could solve alot of problems. sure, none of them are likely to be anywhere near the calibre of Judd, but are 2 great players>1 superstar????

if we got pick 4 and 7 i would be reluctant to give up those selections bc if we use them in the draft we could get 2 absolute guns.

however WCE will demand both of them and realistically we'd have to give up both these selections for Judd...

i think personally id have to go for Judd purely bc u know he is in the top 3 players in the afl, and draft picks could be anything.

however if we dont get Judd (bc he nominates another club) i still think we should try to trade Johnstone,Robbo or Green for another top10 pick.

out of interest i have a new basis for what i would or would not trade for judd...

if they want a (good) KPP (rivers, frawley, newton...) then they only get that, and maybe a fringe player or lower draft picks (21 or lower).

if they want a midfielder or another small it depends who they are. 1st tier (or younger) they get same as above, eg, mclean, or jones... and a lower pick or fringe player. if its 2nd tier or older they can have the older player, a fringe player and a draft pick. ie TJ, CJ, and pick 4.

as good as TJ is he is more expendable for mine than any of the young KPP we have. and if they want to take frawley or rivers, we need pick 4 to draft another young KPD (ie rance).

the only exception to this is if we can somehow get a top 6 draft pick trading other players like robbo. but if we really want to win a flag next year it is going to be a real balancing act for us...and i would still be happy to trade players like bate and sylvia, who could be stars, but arent integral to our structure for next year - the year i think we could win the flag, with neitz and white...

I'll add to this because it is worthy of more responses.

Pick 4 is inevitably on the way out. No say in this. Little bro' Selwood or Morton could be snared and West Coast would appreciate this.

James Frawley to St. Kilda for Pick 9. The Saints would appreciate the young backman to replace Hudghton when the time arrives, he is a top 10 draftee and there are the family ties too.

Pick 4 and 9 to West Coast for Chris Judd. West Coast wanted low draft picks, we have two inside the top 10 to give them. I don't think West Coast would ponder and think of something else better.

To replenish our losses of Frawley and Pick 4 ... Miller and Robertson to the Bulldogs for Pick 22 and [insert young quick midfielder here] or Pick 5 straight out. A 60-goal player is what the Bulldogs need, no matter what size he is, and Miller is the young, tall, built player who can turn into that CHF they need.

But this depends on what the draft is like. If it is filled with midfielders in the top 15 then we may as well take the first option, not going for Pick 5.
