Look, it was close and he was amazing, but I thought the game shifted when we moved Sparrow into the middle in the second quarter. It changed the way we contested stoppages and we first broke even then took ascendency in the middle.

I really think Sparrow was the most influential part of that team shift.

Just back from the game and usually prefer to watch the replay before I vote but. The first 3 were good all game with Steele not far behind. Pickett and Sparrows second half were off the charts and special mention to Fritsch chiming in and putting some polish on at the end.

Generally happy with everyone's votes. I like to give extra for players going above expectations, so -

6 K Pickett (turned the game and led the way with the message of embracing danger)

5 M Gawn (4th qtr to remind everyone he is the best ruck-ruck as well as the best around-the-ground ruck)

4 J Lever (now 4th for intercepts per game, including the 1-game Harris Andrews)

3 J Steele (16 tackles, ooo weee and a fair account of his day)

2 K Chandler (must be a coach's dream)

1 T Sparrow (personal best game?)

Several honorable mentions;

T Mac was one of few who stayed level headed early.

B Fritsch with the vintage Fritsch second half.

Harvey Langford beginning to find himself again. Caleb Windsor coming along nicely. Xavier Lindsay building a body of work.

Jai Culley legit player as well as being a complex match up.

I love that Steele was so good he got votes twice ahead of the honourable mentions!

I've already voted, but lesser lights had their moments, although not deserving votes, I liked the game of:

Latrelle: thought he really competed

Cross: Nice couple of cameos

Mihocek: Always presents

Howes: reads the play well, almost like McVee in his first year

Langdon: Just pops up when you need him and always there for the relief outlet pass

TMac: Solid in defence (as usual)

Loved Culley's game. Windsor really good in the second half. I feel you need to watch at ground level to really appreciate Steele. Tholstrup and Howes also good.

6. Kossie - the game changer!

  1. Lever - back to his best as an interceptor

  1. Max - inspirational leadership, never say die attitude.

  1. Sparrow - best game ever. Maybe he’s found his best spot.

  1. Steele - so consistent. What a pickup!

  1. Chandler - always hard at it, and a sublime kick.

Fritta - just a smidge away!

6 - Max unstoppable

5 - Kozzie inspirational

4 - Steele 16 tackles

3 - Rick back to his intercepting best

2 - Spazz how good was Tom today

1 - Fritta ( could have been Ed but his 4 goals swung it)

The whole team lifted and lifted in the second half, the boys found some belief and ran their guts out, team work and work ethic was magnificent, all the kids stood up.

(Howes - best game i have seen him play; Chin the magnificent; Langford -just go for it)

6 Lever (took 10 marks for the game, and the only player IMHO who strung together 4 quarters)
5 Kozzy (record 33 possessions, his last quarter was surreal with his tackling and goal)
4 Steele (16 tackles! Boy did we need his hardness and he helped turn things around after Q1)
3 Max (say no more)
2 Windsor (his third quarter!)
1 Fritta (4 goals in the 2nd half was a welcome return to the Fritta we know and love)

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • GAMEDAY: Gold Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons are back at the MCG and have a massive challenge ahead of them as they take on Premiership contender the Gold Coast Suns. What do you want to see from the Dees today?

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
