Does anyone know why the changed races? And someone mentioned they may have changed benches too? Is it just an 'everything new' thing or something else?

Interesting to see XL in a couple of CBA's, albeit just the 2

That’s where he’ll play his best footy eventually I reckon

I agree. He is deceptively tough and has enough speed for it too

Roo 5 and 4

Hall 5 and 3

Max 4 and 3?

Correct.

Surprisingly neither coach had Max as BOG.

They were quite integral centre bounces Kingy was throwing him in as well, one was in the last few minutes. JT rated his inside game in a behind the scenes draft video too

No doubt it was a great win by St Kilda and any supporters would have loved their team doing that, however that win is a double-edged sword, it made St Kilda think they are much better team than they actually are, they won a whole lot of dead rubbers at the end of last year, making them think that there are a champion team on the way up, when in fact they're going nowhere, and then you like at there new Recruits, there is nothing special in any of those players, and they are all way overpaid, they are go nowhere.

That may well be the case. If it's true, it's deeply embarrassing for everyone in a position of authority there.

I also agree that in total, the players they've thrown money at are less than impressive. They're either cod ordinary (Flanders), decent but far from superstars (Silvagni, Ryan) and a very good player whose position they have well-covered (TDK).

I just think begrudging opposition fans joy at an unimaginably unlikely win like that one is a bit miserly. Unless it's Carlton, in which case, go hard and go often.

Ross Lyon what a [censored]. I agree Hall was their best player but giving him more votes than Roo or Gawn is childish.

Too early to say Culley has a bit of Nathan Fyfe about him?

Massive unit, great mark, plays mid. His skills surprised me too

His ball use does seem to be getting better.

I do wonder how much the decision to put him on Wilkie was about nullifying Wilkie and how much was about getting more pace in to the midfield mix.

And whether Culley picks up his pace now he’s had a hit out after missing the preseason games.

Mentioned on radio a short while ago TDK came into the game with a virus.

Not sure how true that is, but poor guy might’ve caught one after the game with all that chasing.

Seems to have been suggested that the new race is bigger with more screens to give us more “vibe” running onto the ground.

I hated it, as I prefer to see us emerge from within the MCC heartland, but the X post dazzle quoted gives a better justification for it - change the rooms, leave the old Melbourne behind, including our old rooms.

Just started to watch the replay on Kayo and in the pre-game interview Ross Lyon called Lingers Little Lord Fauntleroy 😂

I’m very interested to see again a match review decision when Langdon marked the ball between goal and point post. They showed one clip only, when the ball had been firmly marked, and it was over the line. But I believe it plain that had we seen a couple of earlier clips it would have shown that initial contact was inside the line

The game was dotted with selective clips and missed clips of decisions, and to cap it off we all had the Taylor failure factor to make the occasion so much more enjoyable.

Even though TDK got off his death bed to fly the flag for St Kilda amongst his coughing and spluttering he still managed to put his knees numerous times into the Great Man's ribs and kidneys for all to see.

Tough pooparakkas.

Fritsch had a poor game but he went back with the flight to spoil and followed up to kick the winner

Hard to stay mad

Im sure this has been answered - last time a Dee kicked six was 2021 GF?

I know NWM is a $2m dollar player but was yelling at the broadcast when they showed him casually on the phone on the bench instead of the action on the ground.

Also still annoys me that there are endless replays of a goal and no view of the centre setup for the next ball up.

The play on missed shot had me miffed, he is such a beautiful set shot, but the going back with the flight was huge, big moment and he and the club were rewarded for that act.

Off the top of my head, didn’t Petty kick six against Richmond in 23?

I think he thought it was not 15, which isn’t totally crazy

Very good win and I really appreciate the game style. It’s hectic and at times nonsensical but it’s the way footy is going off the backline.

The recruits were all great; CJ off the half back was enterprising, Steele was so solid in the middle, and Mihocek is a professional forward that has created a structure for the others to succeed in.

Specifically on Mihocek; he engages his direct opponent and moves to spots that chafe and agitate the defenders to allow for JVR to lead into spots. I can’t help but wonder where we would have been with a player like this once BBB went down…

In one of Roo’s earlier goals, he and Mihocek started leading at the same ball. Mihocek aborted mission and blocked his opponent out Roo took the grab virtually uncontested.

I honestly could have cried with joy. Forwards who don’t interfere with each other. What a concept.

You're probably right, but with 7 votes it could have split 5 - 2.

Got up before dawn here to watch the game and very very glad I did. I had no idea what to expect but had hoped to see a new game plan and players enjoying playing. Got what I hoped to see in spades.

A lot to like and be entertained by in the style of game we displayed yesterday. Run, daring, imagination... All the things that had disappeared from our game over the last couple of years.

A few observations:

  • Good to see a functioning forward 50. The addition of Checkers and the faster, more direct delivery makes a world of difference. I loved seeing the movement in the forward line when the midfield was carrying it forward.

  • Midfield is a work in progress with a number of the younger less experienced players rotating through there. Steele will be critical to the team while Viney is out injured.

  • Given the character of the game yesterday, I think there were some good performances from our defenders. Lever needs to find form and the defenders need time to understand their structures. IMO May was very much a general out on the ground and was critical in organising the defence. It will take time to sort out and adjust. In an open game such as yesterday's it is going to be just about impossible to defend against fast, corridor ball movement. The fact that the Saints had a lot more possessions than we did tells me that our ground defence was good at forcing them into a bit of kick to kick to try and get out of defence.

  • Max played a great game. Interesting that in the interview he referenced the fact that he was forced into a lot of running pre-season because of his finger injury and that meant he had the tank to play as much as he did in the game. It was a similar situation last pre-season. An injury and a lot of running stood him in good stead.

  • The Picketts are going to be a handful for oppo teams.

  • A couple of players were a bit down on form. Langdon, Langford, Sparrow and Fristch, in my opinion were not as involved as I would have hoped. they all may be better with the run under their belts.

Finally, a win like that in the circumstances will instill a lot of confidence in the players, coaches, club and supporters. The players will gain confidence in their form, confidence in the game plan and confidence in the coaches. The coaches will have confidence in the players ability to learn, train and execute the game plan.

Looking forward to the Freo game.

P.S. Lyon's presser was bizarre. He speaks no sense at all.

Cat flu

That game has to be seen as a vindication for all the changes that have been made over the last 6 months. Positive vibes all around, including from the media - e.g. notice how few articles there were referring to us that mentioned Petracca, even though he took the game apart in Perth.

The grey clouds have lifted.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
