This Sunday's Casey Demons practice match marks their final dress rehearsal for 2026, featuring a captivating encounter with the re-established St Kilda VFL side.

From 2001 to 2005, the Saints had a partnership with the Springvale Scorpions, later renamed Casey Scorpions following their relocation to Casey Fields in 2006. This partnership remained intact until 2009, when the Saints and Demons swapped affiliations, resulting in Melbourne aligning with the Scorpions and St Kilda joining forces with the Sandringham Zebras until they parted ways late last year. Meanwhile, the Casey team adopted the name Casey Demons in 2017.

Sunday’s practice match will therefore be the first encounter between the two clubs in their current identities.

While the history may be complex, rest assured that the Demons will be able to field their Melbourne-listed players when the teams face off at RSEA Park, Moorabbin on Sunday morning.

For the sake of the exercise I'll assume Kolt and Sharp get the last two bench spots and Melk and Laurie miss out, of those who miss one will possibly be held out or play a half and then be the carry over emergency.

Backline has some quality especially when you add the Casey half backs. Even without any genuine talls the forward line can do some damage if it comes in quick. Midfield is super thin though. We'll be reliant on Casey uncovering a couple of hidden gems to have any kind of success this year.

Hopefully young Luke Cheffers gets another run. Had an excellent year in 2025 for Gippsland Power as a fast half forward, rotating mid.

V Box Hill practice match last week, Cheffers kicked two goals, had 22 touches & 10 tackles. One to watch at Casey this year.

My old stomping ground, Saints still had some very handy players post '66 Stuart Trott, Ross Smith, Cowboy Neale and Bob Murray amongst others. Doc Baldock had moved on by then. Climbed up and down the outer terraces yelling "Lollies, Drinks, Chocolate..." Last game I attended there was memorable, as it was my first sighting of Allen Jakovich, his third game for the Demons Round 18 1991. He kicked 8 goals in an impressive display until 3/4 time. As Danny Frawley put the clamps on him and Tony Lockett came into the game, Saints outscored us 4 goals 4 behinds to 1 goal 1 behind in the last qt. But we prevailed by 1 behind according to Demonwiki.

Pleased Paddy Cross made the SSP cut another Gippsland Power graduate. When he is on song can kick multiple opportunistic goals. Looking forward to seeing how he goes this season. 🍀

Sharp has been named on the bench for the firsts.

Let’s see if young Jobe Scapin gets a run and can hit the scoreboard. Three goals v Hawks VFL last week. Agile lean half forward with good pace. Had 3 games for Vic Country last year. Another product of Gippsland Power into the Casey squad this year.

Yes. Harry Sharp with his great aerobic ability is well suited to the faster paced, fitness based style of game that we’re seeing from the more successful teams at this early point in the season so he’s a definite in at Melbourne this week while Tom McDonald has been overlooked. That should benefit Casey this week because it could have done with some tall key defenders last week against Box Hill.

I think is about time we dropped the name CASEY , other Afl clubs have done so. Perhaps the reserve side would get noticed more. Example the listing of the team for the last practice match. Just an idea.

Definitely worth a discussion in that the name comes from our decision to relocate to the City of Casey. It really hasn't worked from a local involvement perspective but the VFL as a competition has been in terminal decline for the last five years.

The VFL should be the model for community football but instead it's a mess.
