Could the value of 37 be too low?

In a points sense for Carlton

Yep, possibly.

Although you think that'd be more than offset by the increase in points they'd get next year for Walker from us compared to the other deal.

Effectively half, before 37 comes in due to bids (which will happen after Carlton needs to match).

25 - 590 pts

37 - 297 pts

It wouldn't just be Carlton, as there are reports of several clubs trying to shift their first round picks into 2026. They would all leap at the opportunity to get the GC F1 pick.

Carlton have 2 first round picks next year then a 4th rnd. They also have 2 first round picks for 2027.

I can't remember the new rules for next year, but they could potentially use a third 1st round pick next year if they are chasing Butters. But equally they may really need the points for Dean this year.

That's strange, I would've thought that those picks would really hit the mark with the general vicinity of first round picks we'd want to target.

I could be wrong, but I thought I heard it mentioned somewhere last night that although nothing had agreed on, it was likely those pick selections would be formalised today?

Twomey is already assuming that they move in his mock draft...

JT seemed cold on L.Pickett. Genuine or by design?

I don’t think there’s any chance we take Pickett with one of our first two picks unless there’s some real shenanigans with the picks before ours

But as you say, maybe that’s what he wants us to think 🤣

That's the million dollar question.

@Demonland thanks. Watched whilst eating a beautiful salad roll for lunch.

Like the call that we will use “7&8” and not overthink the trade up , down or future moves !!! There is likely to be two quality youngsters available. Nairn and Farrow would be good additions

JT is a good man. We are in good hands with him steering the recruiting 😊

That clip where he talks about Farrow and Nairn highlights that they like the idea of players with the versatility to play multiple positions which fits what we know about King (and the Cats where he has come from).

The Gold Coast pick from next year has been on the table, along with Pick 37, in order to get back into this years first round.

You mean to get a 3rd first rounder this year?

Yes.

Yes.

Well if we are offering GCF1 2026 and 37 this year, to get into first round this year, then next year must be weaker than they are all saying, or we think we can get someone who will be a better selection than GCF1 next year.

If this year is weaker, why wouldn't that offer be grabbed by another club?

It also means we're not likely chasing Bailey Humphrey again, as we'd be trading away the capital we'd need to have a chance at getting him in a trade.

I don't know and I don't pretend to know either.

It could be for a myriad of reasons. Maybe the club has changed tact, maybe they think obtain a similar player they were targeting in ancillary manner without burning capital.

Correct - things can change in a relatively short period of time. Maybe they have a decent understanding of where this sits now and want to make it a priority.

I wouldn't get too excited yet about Kentfield. He's a very good contested mark, but he hasn't shown he has the athletic requirements yet to cut it at AFL level.

He was also a very low production guy even in juniors.

Now, he may progress to become a star, but I'll certainly temper my expectations based on his output to date.

Low production guy in juniors, what are you talking about, he was never low production in juniors at footy or cricket.

He was a standout at junior level in footy

My guess would be the points don't quite align to suit the Blues needs. Ultimately that future first round pick would be compelling but the Blues moving 9 and 11 seems to be more about making sure they have their ducks in a row points wise

You're very likely correct, it seems to be the most realistic reason. Blues will need to balance their points carefully for this draft with Dean, and next year with Walker. In fact, from memory the points next year are restricted even further and Walker is anticipated to be one of the best players in the crop, so they would very likely be analysing and projecting on the GC finishing positing cf. North.

Interesting that he had no hesitation is saying Kentfield is player on our list already that fans should keep an eye on this year. Had big wraps for him

@Cranky Franky will be distressed that JT is "hyperventilating" about a bloke who has yet to play a game.....

I don't mind JT giving him a wrap - that's fair enough.

Its the endless drooling by Demonlanders over players who have yet to either play a single game or achieve anything at all that is a pain to the reader.

1 goal from 3 national champs games and only 9 disposals a game.

11 goals from 5 Colts games but not a big ball winner. Then I think overplayed in 10 wafl seniors games in his draft year.

Maybe he lit up the younger years or school footy but he didn’t light it up in his draft year hence being overlooked.

That said, I saw enough last year that if the mind and body are fully switched on he’ll at least have something to offer this year.

Take it easy, Cyclone.

2023 AFL DRAFT PROFILE

STRENGTHS:

+ Aerial ability

+ Contested marking

+ Conversion

+ Strength

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Production

- Speed

A hulking key forward with notable senior experience, Luker Kentfield is a prospect who has flown under the radar. Along with potential first-rounder Koltyn Tholstrup, he turned out in Subiaco's League side this year for 10 games and earned a call-up to the state Under 18 side for three appearances.

At 194cm, he rotated between the ruck and forward line and was able to be a mainstay against mature bodies due to his readymade frame. While doing so at AFL level will be tougher against taller and more athletic opponents, the 18-year-old held his own in the WAFL's top flight.

Kentfield is a strong marker and pure striker of the ball, albeit if opportunities are far from frequent. He averaged just six disposals, three marks and less than a goal per game this year, with his standout senior effort yielding four of his overall eight goals for the season from eight touches and four marks.

He debuted at Colts as a 15 year old playing key position and was amongst the best on ground with coaches not believing he was only 15.

He played key position the following 2 years and in 23 started the season very well earning a league debut in Rd 3, he played key position floating between CHB and CHF in the senior side which went deep into finals.

2024 was ruined by injury yet he was picked up and given an AFL opportunity off the back of 23

He played both ends of the ground so don’t worry about stats

The current version of myself LOVES this as this means we get another crack at a prospect I've wasted too much time reading about (Pickett, Dovaston etc)

I fear that the Nov 2026 version of myself will be like "we traded the chance to get Y or Z so that we could draft X last year?? Really? What the hell were we thinking?"
