He needs to nail this draft like he did in 2019

It would need to be 7/8/F1 for 2 and 13 to make them consider it.

I’m not sure how you would know that…. Bbq?

Objectively though (ie looking at draft pick points values), 2 & 13 for 7 & 8 would have to be up there with one of the most lop-sided pick swaps in history. I’d love if we could get it done, but I think it is a fair way off reality.

Likely taken before we get our picks:

Willem Duursma - Anywhere - Mr Versatile. Will be the best of all the Duursma's.

Sullivan Robey - Mid/Fwd - Explosive and damaging. Like Trac, but with Oliver's pre-draft rise.

Xavier Taylor - DEF/Hb - I think he might be out of reach for us, but maybe he slides. He looks to be solid lockdown defender with a turn of pace and damaging disposal.

Cooper Duff-Tytler - Ruck/KF - Absolute massive unit and moves well. Don't think we need his type.

Dyson Sharp - Mid - Great inside player and can be explosive. I do feel with Grlj and Dovaston gaining hype he may slide.

Likely selections:

Aidan Schubert - KF/Ruck - I really like his hands and set shot routine. Very good Athlete. More promise than what I saw from Jefferson.

Josh Lindsay - HB/Mid - Classy Left Foot and very composed in traffic.

Sam Grlj - Mid/Wing/HB - Speed, endurance, competitive and courage to play. Reminds me of Windsor in size and shape. I think he'd be a great fit if we think King wants more speed.

Mitch Marsh - Fwd - Great size and from what i've seen, just seems to be smarter than all of his opponents. Reminds me of Melksham a lot.

Lachy Dovaston - Fwd - His combine is going to see him shoot up the rankings. A goal sneak who brings the heat. I think he feels a hole that only Pickett fills. Would be a big target for me.

Smokey Selections:

Jacob Farrow - Mid/HB - Finds the ball and a great size. WCE should be all over him.

Oskar Taylor - HB/Wing - Now we got CJ I don't see us getting him, but another great athlete with room to grow.

Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves - Mid/Fwd - Honestly he could be the best player in the draft or a flop. He had a game were he had 30 disposals and kicked 5.

Not for me:

Oliver Greeves - Mid - Great inside player, but game seems to move past his type.

Sam Cumming - Mid - Looks like Tom Sparrow, no thanks.

Terrific post, Doc. Excellent overview

For those of us who don't follow under 18 footy, these types of posts are very educational

By the time we get to the draft, we'll probably have a very good idea of who our likely candidates will be (remembering that picks can still be traded just prior to the draft ... and during the draft??)

I've a feeling we might swap next years 1st rounder (from GC) to gain another choice in this years draft (late 1st round?) Taylor might have a smoky in mind

I'd argue 2019 was a super draft. 2025 is not. Good luck.

2025 is not a bad draft. Its just a more mid range draft. The shouts that x player would be #1 on this draft may be true, but plenty of these kids have shown a lot.

I think a lot of the negativity around this draft stems from the fact SA and the Allies have a strong crop this year and the Vic media dont like it.

I haven’t studied the draft crop much this year so I’m looking forward to catching up on it.

Is there any of the champ games that our draft gurus would recommend as a starting point?

With regards to what we do with 7&8 I think it’s exciting no matter what. We have the ability to move up or hold- it will all depend on how JT sees the talent pool. I think we will move up to give us the best chance possible of getting an A grader but we will wait and see.

Of course after I watch a few games I’ll think I’m an expert, choose a favourite from the draft pool and be gutted if we don’t get him 😃

SA vs both VIC squads have the most talent available.

Plenty of great individual games in Coates talent league. NHH for Stingrays vs the Rebels in Rd 18 is a highlight.

Do we trade 7 and 8 to try get higher or take the two players (which end up being pick 10/11 or 11/12)?

Seems like the rest of our picks will be for White, Sinemma and rookie upgrades

Unfortunately, we only have 4 list spots available. Also, White and Sinemma will come on board as rookies assumably, which leave only 2 vacant spots on the senior list (3 if they delist Woey). Which means we use 7&8 only and use 37 if Woey is moved on. So, gaining anymore picks will be surplus to our draft hand. Just saying.

MFC may retire/delist McAdam and pay him out, seems like they don't mind wasting money, which could gain an extra list spot if they really do want someone late, but I think not.

There are other machinations like swapping 7 & 8 for pick 2 etc., but we won't know until later on.

Seeing a lot of commentary about trading tge picks. Tim Lamb yesterday specifically stated that they would not be trading them because they are not allowed to.

this is what I don't get - since when did they change the rules that you could not trade picks up until draft night? We've also had 1st round picks so it's not like we are forced to use them because we've traded previous years' ones away.

I thought you could up until and even on draft night

Yeah I was under the impression you could trade them after the trade period

I believe pick trading opens again on draft night.

So what you'll have is West Coast take their pick 1 and then run down the clock on pick 2 and see what offers come in. They've already signalled to clubs they're willing to split it for the right deal.

There's also nothing stopping clubs talking now. Just deals won't be able to be closed until pick trading opens again.

They haven't changed the rule. Yes, Lamb said they can't but I'm assuming thats because he either thought they were talking about trading them for a player, he had Humphrey in his mind or he just forgot. We can absolutely trade our picks for other picks.

I think lamb just misspoke or was referring to it being past 7:30 so no further trades were being done today.

Unless there's been an unannounced changed of rules you can trade picks right up to and on draft night.

What if we couple up pick 37 and next years 1st rounder (GC) for a mid to late 1st rounder this year?

Woewodin staying being questionable

I think a lot of the negativity around this draft stems from the fact SA and the Allies have a strong crop this year and the Vic media dont like it.

The idea that this might be a weak draft seems to rely on the following views which can't all be correct:

  • it's weak all the way through

  • the top 10 are good, but after that the draft falls away quickly

  • there are no standout obvious top 10 players but the draft overall isn't bad.

I've heard all of the above stated in the media. Given 90% of the footy media just repeats what others say (yes, I'm talking about you, Damian Barrett...but you're not alone) I'm not sure if any of it is true.

So, for those who follow under age football in detail, what's your view about the quality of the draft, and, in particular, what's likely to be available at picks 7 and 8 (wherever they finally land)?

I've mentioned this before. You can't create a list spot by paying out or delising a player. McAdam is contracted for next year. He's on our list regardless of what he does, or what we do.

My understanding is that the AFL made an exemption in the case of Gus as he was 'delisted' by them.

Sorry if mentioned, interesting GWS head of talent on SEN this morning said they traded to 12 because they felt there was a top tier of 10-12 players but didn't have any interest in the rest of the draft.

Super happy with this outcome.

Since 2020, we’ve used first round picks on Laurie Jefferson JVR and Tholstrup, not ideal, here’s hoping we nail these ones

All of these players are on our list snd tracking well. For reference Charlie Curnow was drafted in 2015 and in his first 5 seasons averaged 1 goal per game. In his first 3 seasons JVR is averaging 1.5 goals per game.

I've no doubt that JT et al would have worked out the various scenarios as soon as the Suns acquired pick 8.

They knew we had no hope of getting BH, so the plan would have been 'OK, we can get 7, 8 and, say, request F1, and use those picks on players A and B or tade our picks for ... in the hope we get player C"

And let’s not forget Noah Yze is a possible rookie (is there room for him?).

If we trade 7 & 8 up, then I like the look of Robey. If we go with 7 & 8, I’d be hoping for Noah Hibbins-Hargreave or Grlj and Dovaston.

The club has committed to White, but not certain that Sinemma has that commitment yet., it's very likely we do take him. Seems like Woey will be forced out at this stage.
