I'm not really sure how we're better off if we use the Oliver pick for Steele and pay a decent chunk of both their wages (presumably we're still up for $1M plus between the two).

Aren't we just shuffling the deck chairs again?

I think I'd prefer to see what the new coach could do with Oliver, or keep a list spot open until February for a train on player, rather than bringing in Steele for a couple of years.

King has said he wants to inject speed and skill into the team to take on a new game style. While I like Jack Steele and think he'd be good for culture, he doesn't match up to what King said he wanted.

He's also on 800-900k. Given we're going to be paying chunks of other players wages such as Brayshaw, Oliver, May, Trac, that's a large salary to take on for someone who isn't a key pillar in our longer term future like a Kossie or Langford etc.

It's a no from me for those reasons.

It's pretty clear if you take your blinkers off.

Makes total sense. Why hold Petracca or Oliver against their will if we can get a similarly limited but experienced player in to soften the impact. I'd suspect this trade to be the first domino to drop before we let the others go

I dont mind Steele. His clearance and tackle numbers are great.

Though all my slander towards Tim Lamb remains the same.

He'd be on pretty big coin but I guess we have the space

Once he is happy to play for Casey until Viney get's injured I don't mind it as depth

Saints fans keep spruiking that all their senior players were heaving front loaded. Who knows if it’s true but could be.

Either way we’d surely only pick up the amount that reflects his value as a guy who only got a game as he was captain last year.

see if Saints want to pay any, gives them more room to maneuver if theyre looking to bring in De goey

Aside from anything cultural the 5 years is the big factor with Oliver and the reason we aren’t getting anything for him even more than the money factor. The dees brains trust don’t like the risk of having him fully stinking up our cap for 28, 29, 30.

Steele should be 2 years on less than moderate money, no ongoing downside after that.

I do agree tho on taking our chances with a train on player. Probably won’t find a good mid but can find a wing or flanker and shuffle guys around.

Paying someone 800-900k to play at Casey is madness. He's into our AFL midfield every week for the next two years on that coin. That's why I said pass despite him being a good character and decent player.

Well to answer your reasons CJ, 7, 8, F1st can provide pace and talent.

Saints will pay some of salary as we wouldn’t pay that much for him.

All fits with King coaching.

Food for thought. Speed in the game is not always, nor limited to the 'speed' of players per se.

It can also be everything about players working in unison and making good decisions.

Essentially the ball moves because of good decisions ... it invariably goes flying past you the opposite direction when you make poor ones.

If King thinks he (JS) can work in what he envisages the 'new' game to be.. well, at this stage what else really do we need to understand.

It's a 👍 from me....

( because I'm sure the FD waits for ppl like me to approve ...😉 )

The Brisbane midfield has Dunkley, Geelong has Atkins, etc. Quality defensive midfielders like Steele are important in teams no matter what style they play.

But we've got Viney contracted for another 3-4 years also. It feels like the balance will still be too slow and inside heavy...

I like Steele as a person and player, and I think he'd be a good player for us. It just doesn't fit with moving away from old slow inside and mids. Won't be disappointed if he comes. He's an upgrade on Viney IMO

Just feels like we have become the Saints dumping ground of late.

Cost us nothing to give billings a go

According to trade radio is still weighing this up. Once he agrees I think it gets done without drama and quickly.

Whats a trade period without us trading for a veteran haha

Jack Steele has averaged 23 disposals, 7 tackles, 10 contested possessions and 41/2 tackles throughout his 11 seasons thus far, with 88 career Brownlow votes and a third place in 2020. He has 2 B&F's - 2020 & 2021. In those same years he was AA. He has been St Kilda's captain since 20

He has 2 years with Saints at big money.

If Saints pay a bit and we give a 3rd year on a performance trigger, you would think he would leave a club that doesn’t want him and go to a club that does want him.

We will know soon.

Hope we get him.

Exactly. If the Saints pay a bit and we stretch it out to 3 the finances of the deal likely end up very favourable for us.

Not a 3rd year for mine. He is very close to the cliff if not falling off it by his performances. Saints midfield isn't very strong after all and he is being pushed out
