I know i am getting in early, but i wanted to get out there early that i feel strong the number 9 that Charlie Spargo will be vacating should go to Harvey Langford.

Harvey already owns 19 - seriously, why change it?

Why change any player’s number? Does a low number make a better player?

Seriously I would rest 5 and 13 for 2026 out of respect to our recent decade long champs who deserve this respect for their role on us becoming a premiership team. There is no doubt we would not have won that flag without them.

Lita treat our players once retired or traded with the Royalty they deserve.

I will be interested to see what others think and childish salty and “ fed up” fans need not reply. Don’t waste your ungrateful breath.

Thanks Trac and Clarry a decade of wonderful achievements and performances. Always welcome at the Dees as true greats.

It almost feels like the wonderful family dog got rabies and now we had to shoot them. I must say even if our drop off the cliff was 80% on them they deserve our respect and our gratitude. It's a great idea to rest their numbers for a while - Im not sure it'd even feel right watching even Langford with 5 or 13 on his back so soon. There are plenty of numbers out there (and I hope that both these former heroes don't make the 2031 Premiership Reunion be awkward or that Tracc or Clarry jnr would happy to wear the red and bluein 2 or 3 decades time.

Anything except this.

Anything that doesn’t involve players moving jumpers.

5 was Trac. That’s a past era now. Let Langford become HL19. Make 19 the new 5.

Maybe just the tradition to honour a player with specific numbers.

Like the mythical number 10 in soccer.

Positional numbers.

19 was the number of the player with the second-most goals ever in Dunstall. Of course 23 is another higher number with a legacy. And how about our #31? If in alternative world Tracc retired after another 7 years with Melbourne and more flags and a Brownlow I could how handing #5 to the heir apparent would make sense. But, yeah, let Langford forge a legacy for #19.

Steele might like to keep 9. Or might like a fresh start.

I don't mind the idea of Langford in 4, Lindsey in 5 along with Windsor in 6

I think fans might be more emotional about the numbers than the players are. We’re definitely more loyal. As Clarry said,  ‘It’s a business’. I was grateful to the players when we won the premiership and still am. But those players chose to leave and that’s that. Hand 5 and 13 to whoever the club wants. I’m not living in the past nor glorifying players who wanted out.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
