A coach could make or break a player let alone a team. May should have been tried as a forward , we had nothing to lose. With Goody in charge we was always going to be on a hiding to nowhere.

So much so that he has been snapped up to give other coaches ideas! It’s sad when bias prevents good judgement!

In my opinion, you can see May is pretty close to the end. He’s more interested in playing golf than getting hid body fit, he’s lost a yard and the system that suited/covered his weaknesses is now not in play anymore.

He was an absolute champion for us, one of the main reasons we won that 2021 Flag and the way he played that GF with a 6-9cm tear in his hamstring shows just how tough he is.

He’ll forever be a Demon and deserves to be respected on the way out!

Not sure I agree with the bolded component, but the other points are extremely valid. I think this has been coming for a few seasons now, it shouldn't be too surprising. Sadly, I would've preferred that he chose to retire and ended his career with us, but I'm not begrudging of his desire to play on at all.

The benefit for us is that should allow Petty to move back to where he is suited, though I'm hoping that our three year failed 'experiment' hasn't stifled his development as a backman.

That's very harsh.

He's had a number of injuries this year that were accidental like the larynx and the concussion which would have taken a bit out of him.

I reckon Viney was never the same post concussion, nor was May.

If May missed a heap of games with soft tissue injuries you could argue your point, but his injuries this year were very much not preventable nor to do with fitness.

I do agree that he has lost quite a bit of speed and the end is fast approaching tho. No shame in that. Age catches up to most players.

May reminds me of Lazarus, on terms with Neitz for the amount of collision injuries he has sustained in his career (jaws for both) and the willingness and desire to keep putting the body on the line.

It's ok that careers come to an end, and its ok that people are contracted and their body starts slowing down (be it fast or slow) before the contract expiry.

I'll always admire the swagger and absolute dominance in the air when the ball came into the D50 in his pomp in 2021.

Despite having a modest year by his standards i thought he was quite solid most of the time, i am pretty surprised North Melbourne in particular wouldn't be all over a key defender who's a former club captain with premiership experience given where they're at, especially given he'd come so cheap in terms of trade and likely they could either spread his contract out or we might even agree to pay some of it.

This is why I was surprised that I got shot down for suggesting we hold him to contract even if it means VFL plus some defensive mentoring / coaching. Perhaps he is more interested in playing.

A fair summary really.

Wish it was ending differently . So dependable in finals. His finals series in 2023 was unbelievable.

Could be that if no offers come close to satisfying our needs, May could knuckle down, have a big pre-season and get over any injury concerns

And then come back ready to play. Perhaps forcing the selectors hand into picking him

Trouble is, he's not getting any younger

If judged on his recent past deeds, the above might be a tad unrealistic but it might be the only way. Or he stays and struggles through as Ben Brown did in his last year

*I can't see the club paying another club $400k (plus) just to get rid of him
