POSTGAME: Rd 18 vs North Melbourne

Gee I hope Tommy Sparrow is ok, he was out well before he hit the deck. Xerri should go for a long holiday, and heโ€™s handed Max another AA.

Jeffo and JVR will come good in years to come.

Think Lindsay is tiring after limited pre-season, might need a spell - not just in the VFL but a week off full stop.

Xerriโ€™s hit was definitely deliberate. Commentators were staunchly defending it though.

Agreed 100%. It looked like a frustrated intentional hit to the man. Whether he meant to hit head or hit chest is irrelevant. He should get a nice holiday.

Commentators were bloody Switzerland when it came to north stuff - it wasnโ€™t just that one. The โ€œmarkโ€ in the first half in front was clearly not controlled on replay and they didnโ€™t make a comment.

Of course they were. They think Melbourne players are free targets.

Xerri had no reason to put his arm out like that. He lost the contest already.

I donโ€™t think he meant to knock him out, but he did and for that he gets 3-4 weeks.

IMO it was worse than Tom Lynchโ€™s hit.

Really hope sparrows okay, he looked in all sorts of trouble coming off on the stretcher.

Anyone got any updates at all??

Far worse, this is Andrew gaff Barry hall sort of territory.

Well it's a win but against a side that is young and along with us have a lack of skills and clearness with the ball, the pleasing thing for me from this game was Jefferson where I didn't see much in the past was his preparedness to initiate body contact but today we saw some and he was also good on the lead which could be beneficial for him moving forward.
As for Tristan Xerri, while he will be suspended, it was not an intentional act, full stop.

We are well behind with skills pace and gameplan compared to the top sides but let's hope the last 6 games are competitive.

Never drop TMac again Goodwin.

Amen to that

Very happy with Bayley Fritsch's game today. 3 goals and 21 possessions (career high?). Found space and his instincts were to help the team today.

One slight worry - 0 tackles and 4 pressure acts. When you're finding space and getting opportunities like he did today then you don't worry about the defensive side, but he is not going to get the space he did today against a lot of the other sides in the competition. When his leads are blocked and the forward 50 marks aren't happening this is when most of us notice the lack of defensive pressure and being able to offer something other than his 1 wood. I hope we can see more of this from now till the end of the season, or just keeping hitting him lace out.

Any update Sparrow? Hope he is ok. Very nasty hit. I think we are all very concerned.

you gotta hand it to Trac and Clarry

not in great form but they give 100%

I didnโ€™t think the Xerri hit was intentional. I thought it was a reckless fist from a big unco bloke. In any case, itโ€™s reckless/severe/high on the rating system which adds up to 4 weeks.

Just hope Sparrow recovers. Given that he still seemed to be lights out when he went off is not a good sign. I had a head injury like that as a child and it took months to come right. Iโ€™ll be surprised if we see him again this year.

Kozzie got 3 weeks for something that was a clumsy footy act. Xerrie should get 4 - 6 weeks. But he won't.

Havenโ€™t seen a bloke out before he hit the ground for a while

poor bloke

Bloody love Melksham. And heโ€™s so great to listen to when interviewed also.

If he us interested in being a coach I reckon he'd be a brilliant AFL coach.

I honestly thought both Fritta and Tracs lack of defensive intensity in the first quarter was woeful.

Did think they somewhat redeemed themselves by the end of the game, but seriously when we were on a hiding to nothing after 4 losses on the trot, you'd hope they would have showed a lot more endeavour and despiration - it's almost like they think that's beneath them.

If they want inspiration, just look at T Mac up the other end of the ground.

Disagree Nash, Xerri is an old school enforcer type who likes to hurt people/throw his weight around.

Watching the footage back, it looks absolutely intentional, he lined him up from a couple of metres away and closed fist smashed him in the face.

You do that act outside a nightclub there are criminal consequences.

It simply must be 7+ weeks.

I watched it again and think youโ€™re right, itโ€™s pretty hard to see what else he had in mind. I still donโ€™t think the MRO will see it that way though.

We are still 13 th and only won 7 out of the last 23 matches. This was a reasonably good performance (at least in the second half) , but nothing more than youโ€™d expect against the Roos. How expectations have changed , from winning Premierships and winning ten games in a row; to being delighted about winning a game ( after multiple losses in a row ) to a cellar dweller. I donโ€™t think you can take much out of this July dead rubber. At best we can hope some players get some confidence and play themselves into some form. However, it doesnโ€™t indicate we have any solution for the deeper personnel and structural problems within the Club.

Who said I was delighted my comment was there were positives to take from the game.

Iโ€™m not expecting us to magically flick a switch. We still have work today, but letโ€™s drop some negativity after a win.

7 out of 23 or 6 from our last 12

Whatever way you look at it enjoy the win and back up next week against Carlton

Iโ€™ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we wonโ€™t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything youโ€™d like to ask or say below and weโ€™ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourneโ€™s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time atย Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
