Interesting this weekend that Madden (GWS), O’Keefe (CAR), and maybe Steene (COL) having debuts. Verrall usually beats these guys convincingly.

If we do not try the younger players when they could be ready, we will be left same as last year when Max was injured – TC might do a hamstring again, JVR/Petty will be left to get smashed in the clearances.

We don’t need to bring in a Brownlow medallist, just someone who can play their role so that JVR/Petty/AJ/some other poor bastard doesn’t need to get sacrificed, and the team balance is maintained.

While we are here, Jeffo should’ve been tried out last year. IMO he could be a similar but better player than Morris (BRI). Morris’ slight frame did not hurt him last year. Players who know how to find space in the forward line do not need to be built like brick [censored] houses.

Matthews would quietly sneak up from, while the ball was 100 m away, and king hit. I saw him do it to Stephen Smith.

That was 1 of about 10 behind the plays from Matthews. He was and probably still is 1 sick puppy.

Watching the Casey Demons match last week I was struck by Koltyn's performance. Up to 3/4 time it was fairly even contest and during this phase of the game his performance was a cut above the ruck. His extended cameo during the third qt. made me literally sit up and think who is this bloke? He acted as the play maker, winning the ball as it came out of defence. His distribution with clean disposal forward of centre had a dynamic edge to it.

Jai Culley had a four quarter game, he used his height and strength both to defend and gain possession. Surprisingly his disposals were 80% effective. Admittedly like Kolt his late pre-season was effected by injury. It was good to witness the dramatic improvement in his field kicking and kicking for goal as the season has progressed.

King's Birthday against the pies will be a baptism of fire for forever gets the selection nod. I'm confident whoever represents the club will make a positive impact come Monday.

I was at that game. The worst thing I've ever seen on a football field.

It was a smart coaching move by Barass to put Smith on Matthews, who was basically playing as a full forward.

Normally Matthews had defenders on him roughly the same size but he'd was just too good one on one. Smith was taller obviously and was giving Matthews a comeyebath.

So Matthews hit him, from behind IIRC - certainly Smith didn't see it coming.

Lost all respect for Matthews that day. Still infuriates me the esteem he is held in.

I was there with my brother who worked for the club back then. I was still yelling and talking in Capitals 3 days later! (It's why I understand Picket Fence)

I was there too.

Smith was selected in the Interstate side for the big V and after Matthews cowardly knocked him out with a king hit from behind and he was carried off on a stretcher unconscious, he missed the state game the next week.

I am pretty friendly with Steven and he was the first interview I did in the magazine I started for the club called Demons World and then I moved his admission in the Supreme Court, as a Solicitor, a couple of years later.

The guys around me wanted to kill Matthews after he hit Smith.

Matthews years later got charged by the Police for assault, after knocking out Neville Bruns, with another cowardly king hit at Geelong.

It wasn't just Long.
We allowed the resident Essendon thug Wallace run around belting our youngest players in the 1st qtr and did nothing.
We all knew what they'd do as they'd been doing it for 15yrs and our players seemed surprised.

How can you possibly correlate Dermie with Max. For a start the high performance team & all the bells & whistles that go with it were just not available in Dermies era as is the post match recovery they do today. When Max is too sore/not fit ..he will take himself out. He is coming to the end of his career and it wouldn’t serve his longevity if he’s constantly playing under duress. I mean there wouldn’t be a player out there who is not carrying something ..
