Yep, this was a guy's specialist subject on Mastermind tonight. Most of the questions I got right. I missed the ones about the team we drew with in 2006, our first goalscorer in the 2000 GF and how many games Mark Riley coached as caretaker in 2007.

I reckon a lot of you would have done well.

I think the first goalkicker in 2000 GF was Stephen Powell, but wouldn't have a clue about the other two questions.

I was at the game and have never watched it on tele. Don't know who kicked the first, but I do know it wasn't Neeta or the Wiz - they butchered perfectly good opportunities. It was clear early in the game we were doomed.

It is a strange thing, I've been a statistician for chunks of my career and an all-round genius my whole life, but I absolutely peel [censored] bananas when it comes to this kind of quiz.

I drive people insane when I'm on their team at trivia nights;

"Hey, Chris, you know history, when was the battle of Austerlitz?"

"Well, the early morning was crucial as the fog masked significant deployments by the French forces, and then by midday when the sun burned through the fog and revealed the French in powerful flank positions, the Austrian army's morale collapsed."

"So, you're answer is...?"

"Brunch-ish?"

I thought that too and pretty sure we drew with the Cats (down at Kardinia Park) in 2006. Daniher was sacked around round 12 or 13 so would go with 9 games for Mark Riley as stand in coach in 2007?

Yeah, the draw was at the Cattery; it was the day that Tom Lonergan copped the kidney injury, and the year after we beat them by a point when Robbo went nuts. So, our only wins at Porkbarrell Park this century were that one, Max’s breakout game in 2015, and Max’s hero game in 2021. At least they were memorable wins to go with all the bad stuff (incl. 186). In fact they are our only wins there since 1988 (3 from 26 attempts).

Yep, it was Powell, Geelong and, well, who can remember numbers but Daniher's last game was an infuriating one where Essendon kicked late goals to just get up (I'm sure one could deduce the the answer looking at the results of 2007 somewhere and it was around 9 games). The question itself suggested Daniher resigned. I too thought he was sacked.

My recollection is that it was one of those 'coach out the season' plans which always becomes 'yeah nah, let's call that done'. Daniher elegantly choosing to finish against his playing club.

Epic but infuriating game, too. I think Nathan Brown's visible distress at the siren after not quite nailing a difficult tackle with under a minute to go summed it up and also cemented his own spot as a loved stalwart of the club.

But could I tell you which round it was? Not a chance!

I even could only be guessing which channel the show is on, though I remember I don't like Marc Fennel. Too much moisturiser, I think.

As a now confirmed member of the Demon diaspora, (serendipitously or was it auto-schadenfreude?) managed to attend both games.

2000GF after flying in from LA that week. Luckily got a ticket at the ground at cost. Joy soon turned to disappointment, a competitive beginning in the first quarter blighted by some very nervous goal kicking. Vividly remember David Neitz missing a couple he would normally kick. Really let the air out of the ebullience balloon. With Long and Wallis running amok it was all over by half-time.

Visiting Melbourne from the NT. The final game coached by Neil Daniher had an air of a Shakespeare tragedy about it. David Neitz courageously had a final goal kick to decide the match result but was obviously hampered by a leg injury. It was high drama , more or less directly in front from inside the 50 metre arc. The kick either didn't make the distance or skewed left for a behind. Ich Essen ate the game.

World Cup perennial bridesmaids England see off the final French challenge at Waterloo with a German late substitution.

It was Round 13 at the Docklands and we lost by a couple of points. I remember the number 13 was regarded as unlucky for Danners. Also, we got a call from SEN who wanted to get a Melbourne supporter's view so Andy (Demonland) was interviewed from the ground for about half a minute. Assuming that they played a 22 game season, Riley coached for 9 games. Riley only coached us for a couple of wins but, unlike the usual scenario when you win the first game under a new coach, we were flogged the following week. It was an "away" game against the Tigers and we watched from the stands at the city end.

The drawn game at Kardinia Park was a real disappointment because we were well in front at half time and they didn't make their run until late in the third quarter.

Have to admit that I couldn't remember the first goalkicker in the 2000 grannie but I remember Neita kicked the first point, a poster. I also remember a few dog acts by some Bomber players on Troy Simmonds that resulted in concussion and current President Brad Green who went to hospital with a fractured larynx. All of these things caused us to have to wait another 21 years for the next flag and I blame Sheedy for all of that!

Duke of Wellington when he was an unknown General in India lead an invasion force to take the Phillipines (Spanish possession at the time).

By the time he landed in Penang en route, Spain had changed sides again and the invasion was called off.

Without looking the 2006 draw was against Geelong. As for the Grand Final all I remember is Neitz having the first shot and thinking we might have a chance.

I'll say 10 for Riley as a guess. We won two in a row, then had that putrid loss to Richmond before Daniher quit when they asked him to reapply for his job.

Edit - Just watched segment, he did well but I'm surprised there weren't more stitch-up questions about obscure players.

I remember the Geelong one as I had to rush off to work as soon as the final siren sounded

I forgot/blocked out the existence of Mark Riley until just now.

Trivia is trivia for a reason. It wouldn't surprise me if I'm the biggest trivia lover on here. Nonetheless insight is more important than many piddly details that poor trivia questions get bogged down in. The main thing I remember about the 2000 GF is that we improved out of sight in the second half of the season but Essendon were too good all year -and also were dirty in the final. (No one's gonna try and burn into their memory who started on the bench or the number of Brad Green or Leoncelli, or which round we played Richmond.)

By default I know Ben Beams started on the bench because he might not have ever come off it.

I'd like to follow on from this contestant's work and do the Bailey/Neeld years as a subject. SBS has shown a lot of sad, depressing shows over the years but they'll have to put a warning up before this one.

I had also completely forgotten who Mark Riley was, too. Which makes me wonder, who else has been a caretaker senior coach for Melbourne? Am I right in saying Greg Hutchison and Todd Viney? Was Neil Craig? Who else? (I'm sure there have been plenty)
