if i adjusted yr side and added those 5 plus mentha and sestan, who i think show afl-level attributes, it could be...

B: McVee (21) - Petty (25) - Moniz-Wakefield (21)
HB: Windsor (19) - Adams (20) - Bowey (22)
C: Sinnema (17) - Langford (19) - Lindsay (18)
HF: Petracca (29) - van Rooyen (21) - Chandler (25)
FF: Turner (23) - Jefferson (21) - Mentha (18)
Foll: White (17) - Oliver (27) - Pickett (23)
I/c: Langdon (29) - Rivers (23) - Sestan (20) - Tholstrup (19)
Sub: Prasad (16)

that's a decent side, missing a key back and - sigh - a key forward

So then you target those two in the trade market, ala Lever and May. Or you play a medium back. Or play White back and bring in a cheap ruck alternative.

Really good post this mate. It's a very solid 22. I'd argue Spargo needs to have a proper pre season. At his best, he's easily in our best 22, bit he's too inconsistent as a result of not getting proper pre seasons.

I also think that Langdon could play a role well into his 30s like Sidebottom has. Incredible runner, still.

FB:         ****           Petty 25               AMW 21

HB:       McVee 21        Adams 20         Bowey 22

C:           Windsor 19        Langford 19       Lindsay 18

HF:        Chandler 25     Van Rooyen 21 Tholstrup 19

FF:         ****               Jefferson 21       Disco 23

R:            ****                 Rivers 23        Kozzi 23

I: Langdon 29 **** **** ****

If Kozzy goes though, we look to turn him into two top 10 picks and add to our midfield and forwardline ideally with each pick.

Needs to go to the Eagles for they to be a chance.

Probably the wrong forum, but I'm punch drunk. If we are looking at 2026 already, maybe Goodwin should leave now rather than end of year. Get the players (who remain) used to a different system. Rip that band aid off

The problem is, we're not going to get our new coach in now. We have to wait until the end of the year.

Probably right. But can we have the best of both worlds and lure a Corey Enright type (I rate him) over as caretaker coach? Akin to a free hit.

Maybe baby. I'm not sure how the contract stuff works mid-season. Could we go after an Enright or Scott Burns and have them come over straight away?

Yeah, I did wonder about that.

Although Mal Brown coached from a cherry picker outside the ground many years ago. It'd be a nice start to a Senior coaching gig

Unless the caretaker turns this ship around and has us playing great footy. Stranger things have happened.

Indeed.

I think you would have Chappy step into the caretaker role and they can continue to work on whatever it is they are trying to work on now. The sacking of the coach is more symbolic of change and also to clear the air to commence looking for a new coaching setup. Not the best look to be interviewing new coaches while Goody is still the head coach, though some teams have done it in the past ala the Ross Lyon sagas.

no current assistant is leaving their current club to take over as caretaker

it'd be one of bassett or - more likely - chaplin to take over if goodwin's role was terminated during the season

Chaplin's inability to get our forwards to lead up at the ball carrier tells me he's stuck in the groupthink of the coaching status quo at the club.

Bassett might be the better choice.

What's Bassett's role at the club/which players does he look after?

Backline.

You know what really gets me?

Watching a bit of Footy Classified and seeing Jimmy Bartel analysing our problems.

There was the briefest of brief stories of us talking to him late last year to join in some capacity and then just fizzling out. I would have loved someone like him on the staff. I sat there watching this show thinking 'Why are you talking about this on a TV show?' We needed a very good and experienced addition to the coaching staff particularly in the middle.

I think Nathan Jones was a naive move at the time. I don't believe you can go straight from nothing to line coach anymore.

The current rumour is that those talks have resumed / are continuing and that if he accepts Bartel will take over from Richardson

While Goodwin is rightly copping most of the attention from the media and supporters, I think Richardson has been as bad if not worse at creating / perpetuating the problems that are effecting the club

The off season review essentially admitted that Richardson needed babysitting to learn how to communicate with the players and others within the organisation - hardly a ringing endorsement

So while Goody definitely needs to go sooner rather than later, replacing Richardson with someone who has the experience and respect of his peers like Bartel could go a long way to ensuring that we bring the right people into the club going forward, including our next senior coach

Looking at the cotract details I think our team could look a bit like this.

B: Lever, May, McVee

HB: Salem, Petty, Bowey

True but we can do two things for the rest of the season and that is to play like we did in the 3rd last night as much as we can in the remaining games and secondly get games into kids line Jefferson and Brown. The longer Goody remains the less likely these kids will get a run.

I think we need to rebuild the entire football department first.

Nobody is safe, including Alan Richardson and Tim Lamb.

Everyone needs to be put under review and reapply for their jobs.

We need fresh faces and fresh ideas.

19 hours ago, whatwhat say what said:

add these three:

  • Sinnema (17) - on the wing

  • White (17) - ruck

  • Prasad (16) - forward pocket

personally if yr expecting langdon to play on given that oliver and petracca are both contracted, you might as well add them too

we've got the genesis of a fairly decent team

Who’s Prasad and is he ours?

But we just had a review

Either it didn't identify the problems ie failed or it did and the club ignored the recommendations

Also wasn't there a board review as well?

Such a poorly run club

Look at board members under whelming bunch president in name only no ceo what a basket case

Agree. We need new personel running the Football Department including High Performance Manager, before we delist players…

He's a kid who won't play seniors until 2027 at the earliest. Back to putting our hope in teenagers 🙄

The latest review was run by Pert who later... resigned. Ridiculous conflict of interest. Signed off on by the board.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round.
