This is just pathetic.

We have been an irrelevance if anything most of my 40 years on this planet and you people are here thinking these journos just ‘have it in’ for us.

We are going to get it when we lose against a team no won has lost to since Trumps first administration, we are going to get it when our coach alludes to the things that can’t be alluded to in our society of stiff upper lips, and we are going to headlong back into indifference unless we can halt the slide next week.

Some of may be new here, or too young, or too stupid - there are worse things than being negatively talked about in the media…

Maybe by making an excuse for the disappointing performance of the teams captain and driving force, by extension he is actually making an excuse for the teams performance overall.  Consequently he could be covertly trying to taking some pressure off himself for the poor performance.

I’m not saying it was definitely deliberate, possibly just a slip of the tongue.

Regardless, the whole thing was hardly newsworthy.

There’s endless examples but the saturation and the hyperbole become too much. Not to mentioned the background censorship from the AFL about what is and isn’t a story - eg the goings on at Geelong

The best metaphor for all the confected drama is the videos 360 have as a lead into a discussion on (insert whatever the big drama of the day supposedly is).

They are both hilarious and incredibly grating with an editor who thinks they are Oscar's bound backed by the ridiculously over the top dramatic music and voice over. It's like some silly panto - look over there kidos, the big bad wolf is hiding behind the curtain!

I used to enjoy watching some of the footy shows, now I don’t watch or listen to anything. Why would I waste my time with that rubbish.

This is the world now, people. Yes, there were pre-match and post-match footy discussions, mainly on the radio, and you could read match reports in the paper, watch World of Sport on Sunday morning and maybe even buy something like Inside Football at the newsagent. But after a bad loss it was very easy to just cop a bit of rubbing on Monday morning and then forget the footy for the rest of the week. As well coach press conferences - honestly did they even exist 40 years ago - would provide a 'soundbite' which would add an extra paragraph in newspaper articles, but rarely add more news from the weekend. Now it's so hard to hear all the noise every day about almost any [censored] the media and social media want to turn into content. We can opt out of it - try to opt out of it. But it's so hard to avoid. It's a curse and a blessing having so many footy details and avenues out there

I watched On the Couch and First Crack occasionally but On the Couch is unwatchable this year with Jack Riewoldt and I’m sick of the hyperbole King tries to create on On the Couch. That leaves Demonland. Oh and I like Daniel Hoyne but rarely if ever listen to SEN, I simply can’t tolerate ads, Kornes, Watson, Gaze or Russell and that’s all you hear.

The hate on Tom Morris is rubbish even if he is a weasel.

He gets everything right. Everything. He only runs with a story when he has the facts (hello Sam Maclure) and we just don't like it because its about Melbourne.

Reality is, Melbourne have caused so many problems to be reported on and that is his job.

Don't forget, he does barrack for Melbourne even if he is reporting negative things about the club.

Agreed with On the Couch, the show needs an old head for it to work imo. First Crack is great though, probably the best actual football show. I wait till SEN upload the podcasts for Breakfast and Whateley and then listen without ads.

Yeah, all the footy media .... some stuff will be right, some will be wrong. But really time will ultimately decide the truth. It's all well and good to hear your new draft pick is gonna win the Brownlow one day or your side is about to become a powerhouse or conversely they're hopeless. But watching next weekend, and all the weekends till October, when actual games take place suddenly all that matters are the final scores, regardless of all the predictions and appraisals beforehand .

Obviously the Gawn issue was a non-story, although it once again highlighted Goodwin's, at times, poor judgement.

I just wished the club would shut up.  Stop talking about love, stop talking about connection, stop talking about individuals, just STFU.

But, of course, that's not happening.  Goodwin is on 360 and channel 7 tonight.  It's a complete waste of time, because he'll either say something stupid, or be his typically boring self.

There are two separate issues here.

The modern AFL media is all about big opinions, big headlines, big stories, regardless of whether there is a basis for them. We have daily podcasts, multiple opinion shows a night, radio running 15 hours a day of AFL content, and websites clamouring for discussion in the comments. 

But @rpfc’s earlier post is also correct. @Redleg is a classic example of a Demonland poster who thinks the AFL world is out to get us. They are not, at least no more than any other club. We bring it upon ourselves. We have a coach who mis-speaks in the media, senior players who flirted with leaving last year, a disastrous president interview, a CEO who shopped a player around against his will, and a fan base which picks and chooses when to go to games.

I hate the “less talk, more action” trope that gets rolled out over the pre-season, because there is no ability to act over the pre-season, but the media landscape requires that we talk. But now, in season, it’s valid. It’s time we stop talking about “healing”, “caring” for one another, and being on a “journey”, and we start demonstrating that we’re doing that (that doesn’t mean we have to win every week, but it does mean we don’t produce that fourth quarter from Sunday again).

its about controlling the narrative.

There should be a quick response to any issue  raised in the media.

or there can be 

a comment to initiate an issue.

In either case you must control the story with clear consistent communication.

The reason there’s now 3 footy shows on every night is because fans can’t get enough dribble . The club is in no position to not put its people into the media spotlight.
