Congratulations to our footy media, who think a Coach standing up for a player and suggesting all players have background stories or issues in their lives, is a bigger story than players involved in sexual assault, drug use, drugged /drunk unconscious emergency visits by ambulance to hospital, drunk driving, relationship cheating, organised theft on a large scale, salary cap rorting, inconsistent MRO findings, etc, etc, etc.

We all know several of the stories going round the traps, but the footy media spends unbelievable time on a pretty minor story.

OF COURSE most of the more serious stories that are ignored by the Footy media, generally involve the bigger and heavily protected AFL clubs.

It reminds me of the old saying, โ€œ donโ€™t bite the hand that feeds you โ€œ.

ย

For anyone that was listening to SEN I was the one whole raised the Danger MRO issue with Gaz via sms. It was shot down quickly by Tom Morris ย and Whately.ย

In the same sms I asked why Gawns / Goody story was the first one off the press with all the noise around JUH at #2 that part wasnโ€™t addressed.ย

I never commented on it because I just thought it was an overreaction, but considering there is a topic dedicated to it now, Iโ€™ll comment and say the overreaction was just nonsense.ย

I am admittedly 1 of many who are now questioning Goodwinโ€™s position, but what he said post match is actually quite normal and would not have come as a surprise to anyone who has regularly listened to him talk. Goodwin has always been one to elaborate and give lengthy answers to questions. He gave context around his answer.

He didnโ€™t even spill any specific secrets even after the reporter followed up, and whatโ€™s ironic is, he sure as hell didnโ€™t reveal it was a sickness. It wasnโ€™t until the media beat up that the sickness in the family came out into public light.ย

except that no one knew anything before it and there was no attention on itโ€”the attention was on Xerri beating him, as well as it should have been. But Goodwin's comments meant that we put the focus on whatever was wrong with Max.ย  Even if he didn't mean it or it was taken out of context, that's what happened. If he had said nothing or just, "He was beaten on the day by a fantastic player," no one would have said boo.ย

Heard it and their response was very flippant and rude. Kozzie pickett, had he done similar to Danger, would have been hounded. You are quite right. Additionally, there are stories about Richmond players from the summer, barely spoken about. You've got West Coast players in fights in nightclubs, off the radar. Never heard anything more about Stengle. JUH is gaining sympathy whereas Oliver was lambasted. Bailey Smith the same as JUH. We could be here all day. The media are hellbent on bringing the MFC down...it started straight after the GF win...all talk was about a premiership hangover...then when we unfurled the flag on a WEDS night....a WEDS...they wrote stories of how we only had 58K....the AFL then dropped the midweek fixture the next season...very convenient. You could go on and on...

Not a question I can answer...I have no idea...but it is very obvious who are the media's darlings and who aren't.ย

In a city full of dirty cops, the officer who won't take a bribe will be mistrusted.

Sports betting, poker machines, sexuality bigotry, and general misogyny - we're basically the closest the AFL has to a cleanskin on these things now, and it is not a mirror they like to look into.

At both a tangible and metaphorical level - if you choose to love Maynard, you can only resolve the cognitive dissonance by insisting Brayshaw isn't worthy of care.

I literally saw Tom Morris on the phone outside Channel 9, before. Should have given him a whack.ย

Low IQ guy, that is a very derogatory comment, I think that you should withdraw that Kent. Do you really think that anyone with a low IQ could possibly manage the complexity of managing an AFL Football Department for nine years.

This is such a good point.ย

Reminds me of the rapturous applause West Coast supporters gave Andrew Gaff every time he got the ball after breaking Andrew Brayshaw's jaw and knocking out his teeth.

Say it was a clumsy spoiling attempt and there is precedent in the Maynard Tribunal hearing. Call it a footy act.

I suspect it's nothing more than a matter of perspective and bias.

Every club has an element of its supporter base who believe they cop the rough end of the pineapple from the media, the AFL and the umpires.

Some people just can't help wallowing in the murky waters of self-pity, conspiracy theories, victim mentality and persecution complex.

Iโ€™ve mentioned this before on Demonland but I grew up in the US and always thought the sports media ecosystem there was extremely toxic (and it isโ€”as is the rest of their media ecosystem). But I reckon the footy media in Aus might be even more absurd.ย
ย

I have never seen a group of such drama obsessed vultures. Constant criticism and unwarranted outrage. Prying into private lives for nothing stories while simultaneously ignoring actual criminal behaviour. Reporting unsubstantiated rumours as fact and then never apologising or acknowledging it when they're proven wrong.ย

I expect the big footy clubs to get more coverage (similarly every NY and LA team in the US is talked about constantly) but so much of the rest of the rubbish they put out is absolutely exhausting.ย

You need to consider Goody has had issues before with stress/anxiety in relation to Press conferences previously.ย  I was surprised by what he said, but Max is fine with it, so we just move on and hope the family member's health battle remains positive.

Don't worry. Kent can't even spell his own name.

ย

There's quite a few Melbourne haters in the media.

I could write down a very long list of them, but most of them are pretty easy to spot.

I choose to ignore them as it's not worth the time or drama giving them attention.

That's why TVs and radios etc allow you to change channels or turn them off.

In the week of their pre-finals bye JUH called in sick on both the Friday and Saturday when the Dogs had training but he was actually in Bali. Donโ€™t know if this has been reported by anyone yet.ย

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterdayโ€™s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown andย  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
