We had our first non-Geelong home game this century last year. I guess we have to wait another 26 years for our next one

There was another game at the g around 3-4 yrs ago where we lost by 3 points when Maxy missed a shot at goal from the top of the square. Might have been R1

Did you watch today's game? I have contempt for us at the moment. Doesn't surprise me that the AFL does as well.

This just shows that people would rather complain than turn up.

We had prime time games last year and pulled slightly more than VFL crowds, what did you expect?

Yeah, the AFL knew about today's result when they made the fixture 4 months ago. 🙄

On the topic of disrespect and contempt, this thread is near enough to host my biggest whinge about yesterday - Docklands shutting half of level three and (if you eventually found how to get to the open bits) cramming everyone in like battery hens.

I'm not going to a Melbourne/North game to sit eight deep in the middle of an aisle with people clambering all me over day. I'll reluctantly cop the tightwad MCC shutting parts of level four when we play interstate teams but this was ridiculous. Docklands had done a lot right in recent years but this put me in a bad mood well before we unconditionally surrendered on-field.

Heads up. The Melbourne bandwagon only buys memberships when we’re flying.

The rusted on have auto renew permanently on.

The fact the AFL have now owned the stadium a few years now and this still happening, it’s shows how they give a [censored] about fans that go.

You have got the wrong thread  on this. The issue is the trip to Geelong’s home ground. You are right that we had a home game vs Cats in 2018 R1 and Maxy basically lost us the game kicking a point. But we played at Geelong in about  Round 20 and Toohey kicked a goal after the siren.

BUT we also playerd the cats in about Round 4/5 in 2021 and winner about 15/20 points. AND if you all remember doubled up that Covid year and had the fairytale Maxy goal to win in Round 23 at the Cattery to finish on top of the ladder.

Our real issue is playing 23/4 times at Geelong this century. NOT doubling up.

Ok, I’ll leave it to you experts, just made an opinion on how l think the AFL has put us in a position that will completely bugger up our membership with uninspiring match ups against clubs with low supporter bases early on

Sorry Billy it is Melb fans that have hang ups about their fixture and the times they like to attend and who they play.

We have an easier fixture or so it seems. But for all that we have fans winging about Sat arvo games, instead of night and vice versa. Too many dislikes etc. AND what’s wrong with home games vs Interstate teams? It’s a National comp just go to all your home games unless its absolutely humanly possible. We should go just because we barrack for the Dees and not give a toss who we are playing. See the team win against these less favourable opponents and enjoy the G as it’s our home ground.

We are footy snobs in some respect so get over it. Just go to the footy without the hang ups!! .

An interesting claim given we averaged 7th highest for attendances in 2024, and our two designated 'blockbusters' were both in the top 20 largest crowds for the season.

Getting tired of people with vendettas just making [censored] up to suit their bile.

Let's be serious, those crowds are propped up by Pies/Tigers supporters. Look at our crowds vs Port/GWS in prime time late in the season. Keep denying reality all you want but these things matter to the AFL.

I'm glad we're not on prime time slots, then I might be tempted to watch this [censored] football club get their pants pulled down by teams that have struggled to win 5 games in a season.

Well it is a well known fact that you can't please everyone, but the point here is their job is to try and I cannot personally see where that consultative process is, anywhere.

I think you'll find that the AFL has a dictionary which defines "everyone" as the Seven Network and Foxtel.

Unreal this is my exact routine except I mow once and no golf lesson. If I mowed as many times as you do I'd be mowing dirt and fresh holes in the ground.

100% agree.

You should not be struggling for a seat on level 4 with a crowd of just 27K.

By round 12 we will have played 4 home games against interstate teams, one 'home' game against Essendon in ADELAIDE, and the Saints at Traeger Park for some reason, against a total of only two homes games against victorian clubs.

North are almost as screwed over as we are, but not quite.

St Kilda and Essendon won't be thrilled, but it certainly isn't as bad at ours.

Even Richmond at least get to play an interstate team in the corprorate junket round to Barossa.

And Carlton continues to stand firm as the undisputable evidence that for 20 years at least the fixture has been determined by politics, not 'entertainment value', 'competitiveness' or even 'commercial draw'.

We need to stop hating ourselves. There's nothing wrong with just acknowledging the reality -  The Australian Football League decides commercial and competitive arrangements based on informal back-room networks of favouritism.

Absolutely Spot On.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
