That's a pretty strong side on paper.

Feeling more confident than most that we can give it a shake this year.

Haven’t watched the 2nd half yet, but did a couple nice things in the first. Seems to at least look a lot more comfortable out there compared to last year.

That’s good 23, although on today’s form, Howes might not be there.

He got better the longer the game went and does stick to his task.

But mostly the 2 main competitors for his job got injured today (plus McVee is already out).

hard to argue with the make-up of the team but for opening bounce - and it's purely semantics - i don't think viney and petracca will be starting on the pine, nor windsor

B: Howes - May - Lever
HB: Windsor - Petty - Salem
C: Billings - Rivers - Bowey
HF: Fritsch - Turner - Sharp
FF: Petracca - van Rooyen - Chandler
Foll: Gawn - Oliver - Viney
Int: Langdon - Langford - Lindsay - Sparrow
Sub: Woewodin

very interested to see how we mix up that running half-back and defensive wingman role in 2025 - windsor, salem, bowey, lindsay, and woey 2.0 all look more than capable of waxing and waning in the position

Edited by whatwhat say what

I read where Sestan was impressive off half back in the two’s. Is he a chance for a run next week to take AMW’s spot? I’d certainly like to see him given a shot.

Interested you have Billing’s ahead of Langdon on wing. I know it’s only semantics. Are you thinking Billing’s for a good season

no, i'm thinking #postivelingers to rotate straight into the midfield

i don't think he'll play much wing this year; more half forward / rover

If he is playing in our side in any capacity I’m of some concern to be honest. Does some nice things but too many errors come with it. With 8-9 players who *will* come back into our side surely he would be pushed to the end of the emergency list.

Still think it lacks a tall. When JVR goes into the ruck our forward line is fairly uncompetitive.

One of Johnson or Jeffo will have a spot in Round 1 imo. (Or Tmac back and Petty forward)

Billings? No.

AMW would have played as he is an excellent tackler and good on the very quick crafty small forward. Not sure we have a replacement.

Bowey is a poor tackler and Salem too slow. Kynan Brown has pace and DNA, but not been playing in that role. With McVee out and GWS with elite small forwards, it’s a glaring issue.

*Billings, not Billing’s

There’s no apostrophe in his name.

Can Sestan take the McVee spot?

Not sure. I’ve not seen enough of him live in the back half. He certainly has the disposal, but AMW and McVee are defend first, attacking backman.
Rivers obviously can, but he appears to be too valuable in the midfield now.

how did he play in the later game today anyone know?

My thoughts as well.

It’s a a bad round 1 opponent to face given their plethora of quality small forwards (Greene, Daniels, Jones) and we’re already two accountable small defenders down.

I reckon Brown could potentially play the McVee role but it’s probably too late in the piece to up-skill him down back.

Chandler should and likely will play round 1.

Creates a good outlet from wing to inside 50 and has tremendous goal sense. Without Kozzie we’re, down a small forward and we’re going to have to find 13-15 goals to beat GWS and Chandler’s proven that he can snag 2-3 at the G when on song.

I agree with you that Howes and Laurie provide no point of difference as players.

Woey could do it.

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
