Sure, but Bailey Smith hadn't played in two years due to injury and the Dogs wanted him gone by the time his contract was up. What he was going to do in '25 was speculative when it came time to do a deal. We clearly wanted to keep Judd and he is a best 22 player. It's objectively a bigger loss for us than either Smith or Daniel were to the Dogs. I'd be comfortable drafting a replacement w/pick 25 in last years draft (North are clearly operating with a different set of values given the amount of draft capital they've held as well), but pick 30 something is a shot in the void this year. By the time you get there 9-10 players already tied to clubs will have been bid on. A third of the best kids in the crop will not be accessible and we'll struggle to see 50 kids taken in total.

So are you suggesting we approach the trade deal eager and happy to take 29 because it's the closest to fair in your eyes? How do you want the Dees to approach?

I'm happy for us to get the highest pick possible and if that's 11 then brilliant.

I'm also well aware that he's off contract meaning we lose some bargaining power (not all as Freo can't risk him going into the draft) . Add the fact that he's coming off a poor season both statistically (down from 17 to 14 touches a game) and on the eye test.

I'm disappointed that he's departed, but I'm also realistic in my expectations on what we will get for him, and it's not going to be a first rounder.

That's fair, I was just looking at their list and trying to see if there was a realistic add-on that could be included. Thought at his age and as a Victorian he could be one to consider.
I don't mind him, tackles and runs hard. Would be an upgrade on Spargo but both need to score more goals.

I do rate him but he’s 30, injured a lot, and probably worth a lot more to Freo than he would be to us.

Brandon Walker seems to have fallen out of favour with them and he’s a really quick half back who’s great lockdown on those quick smalls. He’s someone we should be going after

Why not send him to the draft? Is it simply because we don't want a reputation as [censored]?

Its because we simply wouldnt get anything for him and that would be a disaster for us.

This is correct. It's never personal.

...

It should never be personal, but sadly it has been so in this thread at times.

Why is it that every year there are disgruntled supporters posturing about sending a player that has requested to the PSD.

Food for thought, What does that signal to other athletes considering coming, the rest of the competition and families of players?

Even if we don’t end up actually doing it, I absolutely hope we threaten to walk Judd to the PSD. If nothing else but to make him and his manager sweat, the way they made us sweat.

The second round garbage pick we will end up getting back from Freo is not going to aid us nor hold up any other trades for us.

Happy to do the deal on the last day of trade period after making it clear that we want to deal with West Coast and not Freo.

Hey all! Glutton for punishment here 😑

@48 Year Now look away now buddy, I’m about to relay part of a convo I just had with a player which may or may not be entirely made up.

According to Kolt Judd’s decision came out of the blue - a complete shock. He was also convinced Judd was staying. He said Judd is a “closed book” most of the time but in terms of his future he made it clear he wasn’t going anywhere.

And no, I didn’t bring up the subject, Kolt did. He asked me how I felt about it and I told him I wish Judd all the best, and left it at that.

@Lucifers Hero Luci, I told Kolt he’s your new boy and you’ll be changing your avi accordingly (online in general, I didn’t mention DL) and he said, “Tell her to make sure she chooses a good pic of me” which is sooooooo Kolt 😅

He just got back from 10 days in Japan with Luker and today he’s in the gym (by choice) because he’s gearing up for preseason which starts in six weeks.

Please continue to share information that you receive, understand things change and the like but it's always interesting to read.
Not to entirely de-rail the thread, but on the topic of young WA players at our club, Kolt seemingly settled here? Not a flight risk?

Well obviously they're the more important ones, but Ghosty just had a convo with Kolt so thought that was fitting to check in on him

Not at all interested in leaving Melbourne (the club and/or the city). The first time I met him he said “I’m a one-club kinda person.” Of course, everything is subject to change. But as for now, he’s committed to the MFC and he’s pumped for next season. Today as I walked away from him he said, “ Seeya at preseason!” I said, “Yeah, I’ll see you in December.” He said, “No, we start back in November, on the 11th, six weeks from tomorrow.” Bless his eager little heart 🥹

I know people are upset by his move, but a lot acting like we are losing a duel brownlow medalist.

We will be fine, he’s a good ball user and one on one player, but we will find someone else.

This thread is catching up to Trac and Oliver moving, which I find crazy.

This is because it's bewildering.

We plucked him from obscurity. He played under Freo's nose at East Freo and they did not want him.

We put some great welfare around him to help him settle.

We backed him in by playing him before time.

His girlfriend plays in the AFLW and has no ties to Perth.

We offered him a great contract in November last year. We provided flexibility in how he wanted that to look.

We elevated him to the midfield and were looking to do so again before his hamstring injury.

We again promised him of an attacking role last week.

He has decided Freo is where he will be able to elevate his game. I think he may see himself as a level above what he is.

Yeh i agree, and i understand. I guess it’s just footy though.

I got the sense that he thought higher of himself than he is at too, seemed like he thought he was Dan Houston all Australia version.

I’m not intending to be spiteful but I don’t think he will get anywhere as much opportunity and be able to shine as much as he did at our club. We certainly made him what he is.

@Dannyz Are you aware of the contract details as to what we offered in dollar terms compared to Freo?

The points you have made about our dealings with Judd clearly haven't come from the new coach, who's only recently arrived and has been busy in the past week with GF duties at Geelong. And I'd be staggered if he has promised any player a defined role next year without knowing the composition of our list, as the trade period hasn't begun. Judd might have been told what role they see for him, but promises can't be made.

I can only deduce that you have a contact within the List Management team. And their take on the situation comes across as bitter and twisted. They expect players to leave their club to join us, so the opposite should ring true.

Gotta say a little bit disappointed you didn’t know the exact date training started @Ghostwriter.

I'm not bothered one little bit with him wanting to move back home. Prefer to have a list of players that are 100%committed to the Demons. Trust the club will fight for once on a decent return for him.

I don't know that any of us really know, but I think it's about being less of a lock-down defender and having more freedom to play an attacking role. I'm not sure he's asking for more midfield time per se, just more flexibility as a defender.

Could be wrong ...

That’s very unfair. Actually a glowing endorsement if King is not letting a mediocre player with potential dictate to him where he wants to play.

King is the coach. You don’t like what role he wants you to play, see ya later!

This is exactly why we replaced Goody, because standards and selflessness have gone out the window, something Goody himself recently admitted was a struggle post flag.

You don’t let players run the show. Especially not players of Judd’s caliber.

Imagine McVee telling Chris Scott he doesn’t want to play a defensive role. He’d be laughed out of the senior side.

Broke into the team midway through the year then did a really nasty shoulder injury that kept him out. I watched one of his games before that and he looked pretty good off half back. Apparently a new role for him this year after being tried half forward for a while.

Contracted until 2027 though so would be a separate trade from Judd.

Reporter: Where do you prefer to play.

Judd: Im just happy to play my role within the team anywhere in the 23

The point came directly from the coach to McVee face-to face.

The positional thing sounds like a cop off to me. I think for a reason we don’t yet know he feels the need to be in WA.

Once again, Bailey Smith was traded for just pick 17 (and a swap of later picks)

It's not a great example, because Geelong traded what they could.

It doesn't make it a cast iron fact that that was all he was worth. It's all they had.

Freo will offer 38, we should counter with 11 for McVee + 23 or PSD, Freo will up to 29, we should run the click right down like you say.
