Don’t think a hamstring injury will make a difference to his decision.

He may well seek a trade, but hopefully he decides to stay for at least a couple more years.

I would be amazed if the two WA clubs weren’t all over him

Despite what ZH thinks, I imagine the other 17 clubs - plus our own - would rank him in the best small defenders in the competition

I don't disagree, but it means he isn't training - and certainly missing the first part of the season.

I'm simply relaying what info I'm getting.

It would surely be West Coast that goes after him hardest. Could offer a long deal that is heavily front-ended while their young list develops.

We should be able to match it, it's just whether he just wants to go home. Can't stop that.

If he does, put him in the trade for Harley Reid 😁

Why are we worrying about something that may never happen, Judd should be available by round 5-6 with any luck to help  with our rise back up the ladder and hopefully we make him an offer that he cannot refuse.😎👍

This is true. I can hardly post an entire 20-minute conversation verbatim, but I wanna share the general vibe which in this case was great. This kind of response is exactly what happened when I had a very similar conversation with Kozzie’s partner, and that situation’s turned out fine.

I’m sure Judd will get the reminder all 17 other clubs overlooked him until we took the shot at pick 18 in the 2021’ rookie draft. Much like Lawson Humphries at Geelong, Judd was in West Coasts backyard and they overlooked him.

Even Nic Martin trained with West Coast and they said no thanks.

There was enough conversations between him, his management and the club last year that I would still expect something to be done.

There was a 2 year deal on the table as well as a 4 year deal (like JVR’s) to take him to free agency (end of 2029). Melbourne are always open to different options to keep players like him (interstate young guys) comfortable.

DEE TIPPED TO STAY

MELBOURNE defender Judd McVee is waiting until returning from injury before getting into his contract talks, but is expected to remain at the Demons.

The rookie success story is another three weeks away from returning from his pre-season hamstring and is expected to pick up contract talks early in the season once he is back playing.

The East Fremantle product is out of contract but is settled at Melbourne and expected to stay at the club, likely on a shorter-term deal such as a two-year extension.

McVee, 21, has become a pivotal member of the Demons' defence, playing 48 games over the past two seasons since making his debut at the start of 2023.

West Coast and Fremantle are heavily in the trade and free agency market this year, with the likes of Chad Warner, Brandon Starcevich, Darcy Cameron and Kysaiah Pickett all weighing WA interest. However, McVee is not considered likely to be in that bracket. – Callum Twomey

Great news, don’t think he is anywhere near his full potential yet so unlikely any trade would have gotten fair value. Probably lucky wc and freo both look rubbish so why go back to that

Sign him up to a 4- 5 year deal

No chance

Small deal now, back himself to become a mid, then a big contract awaits

Star defender; moving into midfield the big query

We will get cooked in a trade

Out of contract and no one in the media knows who he is, recipe for disaster

That most probably means that Juddy will be the  next monkey on the media grinder's squeezebox.

Nah makes sense. Players like to get deals that take them to FA at this point of their careers.

Had word this was completed for a two year contract extension around October of last year.

I wonder what changed it's course. Hopefully it's official soon. Judd is brilliant and it's great to see him happy at the club and in Melbourne.

Our stocks of small-medium defenders are at critically low levels. It is absolutely essential that we lock McVee away as soon as possible, ideally on a long term deal.

We are not going to be winning finals with any combination of Bowey, Howes and AMW in these roles, as was shown clearly on Sunday with Bowey and Howes being destroyed by Greene and Coniglio.

So true ET get him signed up the rest will take care of itself, he has had a huge 2 years and will only keep on improving. When you add in Salem, Bowey, Lindsay, Windsor, McVee, Rivers, Langdon, Billings and hopefully AMW we have our sml / medium backs and wings covered.👍😁

Didn’t know what it meant in February; still don’t know today. I’m sure I’ll never know.

Unrelated (but possibly related): great news about Judd 🥳

The combination of McVee, Windsor and Lindsay gives us 3 players who can bust the lines and use the ball well which is essential for footy de jour. Looking forward to seeing how we maximise this new strength in combo with our old strengths to win the ball and move it faaaaaaast. Heck, we may even give our forwards one on one chances inside our forward 50!

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
