This has probably been a conversation with Dean Cox for a couple of months. You can guarantee Cox would have been having significant input into trade and draft conversations with this transition in mind.

I have mixed feelings about Longmire's legacy.

Zero doubt he is a very good coach, but I cringe when people describe him as great or one of the best. In the end, with a lot of favours going his way (coaching a club in solid form with ideal facilities and established culture, significant home ground advantage, which had already played finals almost continuously for 15 years, and which wasn't subject to the 'natural cycle' thanks to academy pick top-ups) his coaching record is roughly on par with Simon Goodwin.

 

My thoughts exactly. Good clubs simply just fade from the spotlight and work without fuss.

People who were saying our issues were media beat up driven stories are seriously misguided. 

This is where I hope we would learn, take the lessons and grow as a club. May seem like a small thing, but it does add up. 

Also, on the flip side, I’d argue Longmire is one of the best. Yes, Sydney get a leg up in terms of academy, but let’s not forget the plethora of rookies they also handpicked.

Cunningham pick 49 rookie draft, Jake Lloyd and Rampe were rookie pick ups in 2013, George Hewett, Hayden McLean and Allir Allir were also not rated and were all moulded into very good AFL footballers during the Longmire era. 

Ain’t even including other rookies like Papley, Amartey, Fox and Melican. 

Even rookies asides, Parker, Tom McCartin, Warner, Rowbottom and McInerny were late picks and passed on by other clubs. 

As a coach he has moulded a handful of rookies into outright superstars (Papley, Rampe- super underrated, Allir) or at worst very good players of the competition. Not many coaches would have this particular type of record of consistently delivering on no names and giving them a reputation.

I’m going to put Longmire into the same bucket as Buckley, Roos etc who get trucked out by commentators and punters every time a team is looking for a coach.  He’s cooked people!

Yes father sons create an imbalance too but not to the same extent as academy picks which help regenerate the list with top players every other year. Without their academy selections they wouldn't have made the 2022 or 2024 GFs.

Sydney has exactly the same access to f/s selections as every other club. Tom Mitchell was one of their best when they [] the bed against the Bulldogs in 2016.

In addition to that they have been able to recruit, using disposable late picks;

Braeden Campbell (2020), Errol Gulden (2020), Nick Blakey (2018), Callum Mills (2015), Isaac Heeney (2014)

Brisbane now have the 2 Ashcrofts and Fletcher plus Marshall all will be vital players in their effort to go back to back! 

Don’t rhink  Mac Andrew’s would slot in our team at CHB or CHF? And improve our footy.

That’s  exactly what the idea of the Northern Academies are to assist the NSW and QLD teams to be competitive and it is working before our eyes.

I'm certainly not Goodwin hating but I think it's important for our management to find out what Longmire is looking to do in 2026. He may be being sounded out for the Tazzie role, or looking at media or a job with the AFL or a complete break from coaching for a period of years. Another team may get to him and offer a huge amount of money. All that's fine.

But there is a scenario where we finish 10th or below and people will be screaming for Goodies head. This is the scenario where having had a conversation with Longmire, we can push to make it an option for him.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very bullish about our chances of getting back up the ladder and playing finals again in 2025. With Goodwin as coach. We have a very good list on paper, and if the stars align we should be considered as a team capable of winning the flag. But we should all be asking what is a pass mark for Goodwin in 2025?
