That's the current list, noting that some clubs will be passing because they may have an excess number of picks or want to use the picks for the supplementary draft.

One thousand young lads nominated and around 60 selected.

I feel for those who miss out especially those in the 60-120 category. Life is tough to be forever pigeon holed at that age.

Last night’s talking points ended with the perfect segue into tonight which gets underway at 7.00pm.

TALKING POINTS | 2024 AFL Draft: Night One

After a night of drama and plenty of bolters, there is still plenty of talent left off the board.

Perhaps most significantly, key forwards Jack Whitlock and Jobe Shanahan were overlooked for the quality midfield and utility talent available. They will be in high demand to start night two, and may even pique Richmond's interest first off the board.

Another consideration for the Tigers will be leading ruck prospect Alex Dodson, who would nicely round out their rebuilding spine.

Elsewhere, the Western Bulldogs hold two of the next four selections and could look at some running power in Hamish Davis, or explosiveness with Tom Gross.

Ruck/forward Thomas Sims is another key position prospect who will be high on many clubs' boards and may warrant a trade up the order. The likes of Christian Moraes and Jasper Alger have plenty of links in the next 10 selections or so and will likely also find homes quickly.

On top of the four first round bids, another three may be placed early on night two. Giants Academy ruck Logan Smith should attract attention, while St Kilda will have first dibs on NGA products Lennox Hofmann and Adrian Cole in a similar range. Meanwhile, Carlton will be hoping to hear a bid for Ben Camporeale after its pick 40.

And when that’s done, there’s the question of what is now Melbourne’s Pick 75.

I think, because we've traded out F1, we will struggle to trade our other future selections.

The rule is that if you trade out your F1, you need to keep your other round picks. The AFL can choose to waive that. Generally the questions is whether they'd allow it when trading for a player, and they are more likely to allow it if its a young player. But I'm not sure what their criteria would be for trading directly for draft picks

If last nights long wait just to get to pick 5 is any indication, tonight will be painfully dull.

No real need to trade up in to this years remaining draft picks, sure talent is there, but you only trade away your future to get real value in todays draft picks.

 Can see this thread is a bit of a Q&A session.

Something that has been slightly perplexing is the expansion of the first round of the draft. At genesis every club was given one pick in reverse ladder order. That should total 18 with the growth of the competition.

After the horse trading, plus the genie of future firsts now live!  Some clubs will of course have multiple first round picks. Add the generous AFL largesse to the perpetual cellar dwellers, ‘disadvantaged’ newer franchises in the NRL heartland and  compensation picks for free agency.

The first round girth has blown out right out to a generous 27 notches on last night’s first draft night. 

Will the entry of  the 19th Tassie Devils  necessitate the use of braces on the now moribund figure of the draft?

Can’t help but feel like we went way too hard to get the extra first rather than try to maximise picks and list turnover by 3-4 picks in this middle range of the draft. Essendon might’ve cooked us here

Nah, easier to turn the list over with a couple of quality top picks.

One kid out of Queensland that has improved this year is Ty Gallop. Plays key forward at local club Maroochydore in QAFL as a 17 year old. He’s not Jed Walter but can take pack marks, loves a goal and has physical presence even as a youngster. He can kick 45/50 metres easily. Records this year shows kicked 8 goals in 3 Coates league games for the Brisbane Lions academy,  4 goals in 2 Under18 championships games for Allies and Kicked 30 goals in 9 QAFL games for Maroochydore (including 16 in last three games of the year). Dominated the last game of the year versus morningside. He is unfortunately tied to the Lions academy but sure to bolt up recruitment lists.  Not sure the Lions have ability to match as they will have invested heavily in Ashcroft and Marshall.  Aggressive young key forwards are hard to find. Might not be top 50 but Dees have to find some gems with skill and some real toughness in their style.  Reminds me of Logan Morris in style.
