Hi Nev, Jones was Head Coach of the boys team at Peninsula Grammar School this season. I also think that he would’ve played a big part in mentoring and providing on-field leadership and coaching to Clarry, Petracca and Brayshaw.

Sounds like he’d be coming in as our midfield coach. It’s bloody hard to coach and give strong feedback to blokes you’re mates with as he’ll have to do to our midfielders.

Secondly he never seemed to have any burning passion for coaching. I don’t mind listening to him on commmentary but he’s never struck me as an incredible tactical brain and he’s never overly insightful.

I was also excited about the idea of Teague coming in as he’s regarded as one of the best ball movement guys in the business. You’d think it’s one or the other with him and Jones otherwise with Bassett coming in and Chaplin and Choco there too, the soft cap would prevent it from happening. What experience does Jonesy have for what’s probably the most important line coaching role a team has? If it’s Teague OR Jones it’s Teague all day long for me. 

Also just reckon it feels like a bit of a token feelgood move to appease an angry and disenchanted supporter base.

Would absolutely love to be proven wrong but they’re my initial thoughts.

I was with 300+ supporters at the B&F, I didn't sense any anger, even towards Roffey and Pert but then again there weren't many Demonlanders there or ones brave enough to speak to them face to face.

Dependent on the role, if the rumours are true, I wouldn't mind Jonesy back at the club, a line coach may be a push,  though he does have 300 games experience and played under 'many' coaches so he should know a bit.

Someone at the club saw Clarrie's interview on Unlaced and thought deeply about the story from an early training session where Nathan Jones gave him a whack to the throat.

That'll be Jones' main job; giving Clayton Oliver a regular whack to remind him he's in the AFL now.

Saty if you think it’s only a “rather small and vociferous” supporter cohort who are feeling some disenchantment with the club then I can’t help you. 

I’m generally pretty glass half full but it’d take me 10 minutes to write out the list of on and off field [censored] ups from the last few years.

I love Nathan Jones for his on field performances and his loyalty, sacrifice and dedication to the club. But if he’s not the absolute best person for the job he’s been linked with then the move shouldn’t just be blindly applauded.

The 300 that attend the B&F are certainly in the minority of supporters

If it's anything like the coaching in the APS schools, it's mostly a tokenistic role and the line coaches do all the coaching...

Chunk was a great midfielder love to have him back at the club.

Don't think it's a forgone conclusion that explayers coaching at their former club is a bad thing.  Of course it depends on the individual circumstances and the talent, buy for example Paul Roos at Sydney worked out pretty well.  Not saying I have any intel on Jones being the same sort of all round coaching footy genius as Roos, but from what I understand, he was always well respected for his leadership and perhaps that's what he'd be helping to re-establish and reinforce?

I will make some assumptions that some might agree with but you will hate the conclusion I draw. If this from the review of the FD and Jones is deemed necessary from a ‘culture’ POV - then that is a damning assessment of the leadership of the playing group and their mismanagement of the expectations and standards of that group. Gawn, Viney, CP5, Lever, May. Are the limited leaders or just complacent?

Unfair binary question but hardly rhetorical. Our leaders have had very little heat on them.

Yes this is correct. That said, the course is on hold at present and the revamp version will commence in Nov. Does this mean that Jonesy needs to have that certificate if he is appointed as a line coach? The answer I assume is yes.

This is a good point, and ultimately I reckon it's the key reason why we ended up with 1 flag and no more from this group.

If you add Oliver to the 5 you've listed, I reckon we have 1 in that group who is both a good enough player and good enough leader to drag the team over the line in big games. I reckon another 2 seem to be great leaders but probably just not quite good enough players. And the other 3 who are good enough players but who just don't have the leadership qualities. At the end of the day, a club can do everything possible off the field, but ultimately it's only the guys that go out on the field that can drive the final result.

There are some reports that Viney's extension was exactly that.

I think there is probably a bit of that. Jones would be the second choice for the role after Sloane, but Goodwin is clearly filling the ranks with his mates. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. In fact most coaches do it, so I'm not against it as the coach needs to be in charge of his own team. If it goes pear shaped it will also fall on his shoulders next year.

I really don’t understand this Viney’s deal was a sugar hit report from Barrett. The Roos were after him, Clarkson sounded him out in a press conference, he was our best mid by a street this year, won our B&F and clearly would’ve wanted an extension for his family security and used the Roos and other interest to get himself the best deal. If the club waits another week to announce it so it doesn’t look like it’s coming off the back of the Trac stuff what difference does that make? Are they suggesting Viney’s letter wasn’t genuine? Rubbish!

The same reporter claiming Viney’s extension was PR stunt was leading the charge on him going to the Roos until the extension was signed. There’s plenty of negatives floating around about us at the moment, and there’ll be more after the review is done but this is a completely transparent media beat up. 

To reiterate what I said about Sloane, I don't see why ex players with next to no coaching experience are being touted as the all important midfield coach replacement that we so badly need. I'm not opposed to bringing good leadership into the club and I would love to see Jonesy back in some form but throwing these guys into the fire in what seems to be a pretty extensive role doesn't gel with me.

I was at the B&F and I do not recall any standing ovations for either Pert or Roffey. Kate was treated respectfully and Pert's introduction came with what I would call a murmur...

The key words I took from that tweet is midfield assistant.

To me that means he wont be in charge but learning off whom ever we get for the midfield coach.
