Never ever thought Jones was coaching material but happy to be proven otherwise.

Interesting that our culture fell apart after he left though.

Daisy Pearce will be half a chance to become an assistant then an AFL coach over the next few years

not a big fan of players coaching at their own club first.  Think they should learn new things from other areas.

but happy to be proven wrong

Great players do not necessarily make great coaches.   Hird, Buckley, Voss (at least version #1) say hi.

Very happy to welcome back Jones … When you’ve been in the system so long you don’t need to listen to another head coach to tell you what to do

Totally agree with you...

He might be one that can helpf with culture - he was the leader when Trac and Clarry etc were coming through so they prob still look up to him.

But he doesn't strike me as someone that will have fresh ideas in terms of gamestyle / strategy (at least not without having spent some time at another club)

I love Jonesy. So I feel conflicted writing this. And it’ll probably be a wildly unpopular opinion.

But I don’t like it, for a number of reasons.

Sounds like he’d be coming in as our midfield coach. It’s bloody hard to coach and give strong feedback to blokes you’re mates with as he’ll have to do to our midfielders.

Secondly he never seemed to have any burning passion for coaching. I don’t mind listening to him on commmentary but he’s never struck me as an incredible tactical brain and he’s never overly insightful.

I was also excited about the idea of Teague coming in as he’s regarded as one of the best ball movement guys in the business. You’d think it’s one or the other with him and Jones otherwise with Bassett coming in and Chaplin and Choco there too, the soft cap would prevent it from happening. What experience does Jonesy have for what’s probably the most important line coaching role a team has? If it’s Teague OR Jones it’s Teague all day long for me.

Also just reckon it feels like a bit of a token feelgood move to appease an angry and disenchanted supporter base.

Would absolutely love to be proven wrong but they’re my initial thoughts.

Absolutely Ollie.

i still think in Mick’s first 3/4 years he struggled on game day with little imagination and flair. And as many in the game flair and possibly imagination would not be in the vocabulary about Mick.

However he realized that he had to expand his horizons and gradually became more aggressive and when the Dees rebuilt with young recruits on the run about Season 5 we saw the Dees become far better in big games and comfortably made the Finals each year since including our magnificent initial Flag in a titanic tussle over Brisbane at their newly constructed  home ground. Low scores but a slug fest we won in a low score.

But by now Mick was switching players in positions and had a much more versatile list to coach.

Fast forward to today and we looked down and out after Essendon on GF Eve gave us our biggest and most embarrassing experience in the 8 and a bit seasons AFLW. Our fourth loss and 3 by more than 40 pts.
However the dozen injuries and loss of form from that day have stopped ans Mick  has on his admission simplified our game from one match to another and bingo 3 thrilling wins all different the undoubted highlight last Wednesday nights heist of the almost unbeaten Crows at their fortress Unley Oval.

After  yesterday we are now only % out of the Top 8 with Finals a realistic possibility if we win our last 3 h and a games with challenging games vs Tigers and Hawks and the undoubted worst team in the fixture the Pies due to injuries and a static game plan.

Mick’s greatest coaching philosophy is to get his players happy engaged and contented in playing footy for his team and that’s the reason now with his match hardened and clever brain he has managed in his none seasons win most games until just recently.

With his skills and confidence he could now be an assistant coach for a year or two and enter a succession plan or just be ready to take over any time soon.

Mick has the method and air of a winner and the unity of groups of young women point to a potentially successful stint when and if he switched to the men’s league at the Dees.

What about differing ways and plans only being taught under virtually one club or a certain style.
We need a left field person to dramatically alter our style of game plan and give the players back their flair and love of the game. Not be suppressed by defence and contest perpetually.

This news doesn't excite me. Would prefer a proven assistant coach with intel than a club legend with very little external experience. Maybe this has more to do with a culture reset 🤷‍♂️

100% thats what this is. Building back some standards that have dropped away. We tried for Sloan who knocked it back and this is the backup plan.

Would prefer he wasn't a line coach and more in the development side of things.

I think this is also about getting our two midfield bulls back engaged and onboard with a younger more recent(ish) retired player who can relate better.

Yep. If he’s the second choice to Sloane as the leadership, development role that’s fine.

Midfield and forward line need experienced coaches.

Interesting to see where this leaves us with other assistants?

Jones coming in to help in a leadership role seems a bit odd, given he handed the leadership over to Gawn/Viney.

Still chasing at least 2 assistants, seems to have gone quiet lately. Jones probably taking the role Sloane was earmarked for? He's got passion that's for sure. Would be interesting to know what if any qualifications/experience he has aside from being our former Captain?

I understood that to coach at AFL level,  prospective coaches had to undergo some form of training (cert 4) or the like. Is that correct or can anyone coach without some form of recognised formal training?

It might be cynical, but I hope this is based on merit and not just a feel good news story expected to excite the fan base. I think we're beyond that now, and just need the best people, regardless of their background

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?
Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG. Unfortunately, performances like these went against the grain of what Melbourne has been producing from virtually midway through 2024 and extending right through to the present day. This is a game between two clubs who have faltered over the past couple of years because their disposal efficiency is appalling. Neither of them can hit the side of a barn door but history tells us that every once in a while such teams have their lucky days or come up against an opponent in even worse shape and hence, one of them will come up trumps in this match.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
