His career was stillborn when first recruited by us due to bad luck and injury. Turned out to be a great defender for the crows.

After being highly regarded a decade or so ago, he was axed by Port Adelaide at the end of 2023 and spent 2024 out of the AFL system.

He might be fantastic but it wouldn’t be an overly inspiring appointment on face value.

Don’t get too excited. I believe he has been regarded as a very good defensive coach.

Would prefer a forward coach that actually plied their trade as a specialist forward. Aces in their places. Same goes for players we need to stop converting defenders into forwards. Our forward line is dis functional and has been for way too long. There is no system.

Has been a head of coaching development at Norwood for the year.

Was an excellent cricketer in his day also, just happened to belt him for the hugest 6 over mid on during our cricketing days. 😂

Thought I'd massage that into this convo.😂

Won a 3-peat with Norwood from 2012-14 expected him to go for a job in his own right in the AFL.

Under utilized big time at Port, stepped aside for the greater good.

A hard working fella who will with fresh eyes and perspective do good things with our forward line.

At least we have been proactive this off season.

Hopefully Mcqualter gets the gig at Wet Coke, never liked him as our mids coach.

PORT ADELAIDE assistant coach Nathan Bassett will depart the club after being advised his contract will not be renewed for 2024.
Bassett has spent eight seasons at Alberton, initially as defence coach before taking on the forward line in 2019.

This season he returned to the backline, where he made his name during a 210-game AFL playing career.

Port Adelaide General Manager – Football, Chris Davies thanked Bassett for his dedication to the club since 2015.

“Nathan has worked tirelessly for our club in an extremely demanding role,” Davies said.

“He has offered a unique perspective across his time with us and always operated with the utmost professionalism and diligence.

“We wish Nathan and his family well with his next career move.”

Nathan Bassett has had a long and varied career in SNAFL and AFL, 210 games with Crows, Coached Redlegs to three consecutive Grand finals winning two, 2 years with bummers then 8 years with Port as fwd and backline coach finishing up at the end of 2023. Spent 2024 back at Redlegs in a FD management role and has a lot of experience with player development as well. We traded the boy back home due to serious injury, I am interested in seeing what the man can bring back to the Dees.

That info says he hardly cleared off from Port. They called time on him it seems.
And it was after 8 years as well.
That’s hardly leaving a by Club in the church.

Wouldn’t  want to be employed by you Bluey all you have done is blemish Nathan for long service and loyalty.

I would think Goody  would be all over SA assistants and be very aware of their credentials.

Thank goodness.

I also know what you are referring to but it’s a decade ago. Give it a go move on.
Houston changed his mind  and Bassett did also.

Actually so did one of the Jarmans !! Was 25/30 years ago. Have you forgiven him ?

Why do we get a backman as a forward coach, a ruck as a fwd coach or. defender as midfield coach?

Why can't we get Stevie J as a fwd coach?

Went for a cheaper assistant in Tyson Goldsack, that's why he wasn't renewed.

Very well worded statement to save the club face.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
