    Maybe the review of the board will find that they’ve failed in properly managing the administration and will therefore nominate someone external to review that side of the club?

    Who will review the reviews?

    Honestly, internal reviews are a matter of course, announcing it is like announcing that you shave in the morning. 

    The pressure will build and we will be bringing in a couple of former footy greats from other clubs and Deloitte or a smaller firm to do an external review.

    I did not know that Pert & Roffey were current players so cannot be  blamed for our results this season.

    Nearly everyone of our key players had extended absences through injury etc during the year. Start with losing Gus (due to an unreportable offence), then Clarrie's issues & injuries, Petracca (due to an unreportable offence), May, Lever , Salem  & Gawny towards end of year (plus Bowey & Spargo who were regulars).

    The vitriol directed at Roffey, Pert & Goodwin goes beyond fairness and contructiveness !!

    Now now, don’t go thinking about these things in a sensible way, demonlanders want blood and lots of it no matter how counter productive

    My understanding of any review process is that the outcome is decided and agreed to beforehand, and the review process outlines the significant work completed to justify, and implement the outcome.

    I hope any review they do looks at our high performance management. Been poor since Burgo has left. I know Griffith was supposed to be his apprentice but we’ve got clear deficiencies in our fitness.

    If we’re serious about turning things around in a hurry, I’d throw the cheque book at Peter Burge. The Hawks are clearly the fittest team in the comp and he’s also got runs on the board as he was at Richmond during their 3 flags.

    I’m utterly confused here: from a governance perspective, oughtn’t a board review be conducted by an external, independent entity? It seems to me it could be compromised otherwise. What is it trying to achieve if internal?

    Same for a FD review: that should be conducted by an external entity even if the findings are kept internal.

    I think Brad Green will sponsor the review but an external consultant will be engaged to undertake the work and deliver a report.

    I agree that a review of the board needs to be independent. But if we have some changes to the board (Stephen Smith as President), then the board should review the Football Department and Administration.

    I previously had the view that the review of the FD should be independent, because I feared that Roffey was too close to Pert and Goodwin. Now that she's gone, I'd be comfortable with a review being undertaken by the board if it was overseen by Stephen Smith.

    You do realise the board is bigger than Roffey... none of them can be unbiased.

    How hard is it to just get a consultant and a couple of old footy players and admins?

    Its not cheap but you’re saving money in  PR clean up and you might actually get something from it.

    Careful, I’d say your allegiance is showing.

    I’ve long been a firm believer that football clubs reap what they sow approximately 5years earlier. PJ & Roos laid the groundwork for our flag in 2021 (including significant “managing up”).

    In my opinion - Pert was an ill-considered captains choice without consultation of others that had worked with him beyond favourable references. I’m aware that some key figures in the industry were shocked & dismayed that they weren’t spoken to prior to his appointment. While he has his strengths, I also consider him to generally come across pompous, smug and dismissive. Ultimately, I don’t consider his presence to be conducive to ongoing success, just maintaining the status quo for a short time before a gradual decline.

    Likewise Roffey, who was happy to just let everyone do their job without interference initially (a commendable trait) while taking credit for successes. Great at the time, but the role needs more. And in my opinion she would ultimately prove to be someone who promoted herself as an approachable my-door-is-always-open type, but when approached was actually a why-is-this-person-talking-to-me type. Her advertised skillset also didn’t appear to bear any fruit.

    I’ve said somewhere before on this forum (maybe deleted, not sure) that we simply “didn’t have many friends” in the AFL or media circles. Some didn’t think that was important & seem happy with the sentiment of “not being liked” as it’s apparently a sign of success. But the problem is that we are a club trying to gain a foothold & begging for land/training facility to call our own, and for the rules to be changed in our favour for once as opposed to the opposite... these things don’t happen if you’re generally presenting a very unlikeable front. Maybe “friends” is not the correct term, but if you’re seen as “charmless bullies” you have a serious problem.

    Was listening to triple M yesterday and Jay Clark and Damo Barrett stated the following

    • Kate Roffey is the first of a few changes. One of those big changes is Gary Pert also being pushed out potentially. 

    • Steven Smith is pretty much in the box seat to be our next president. Will be going on a much needed holiday in the next couple of weeks after negotiating some pretty big business deals and may be announced in the back end of the year.

    • Trac and Goodwin caught up at a Cafe in Armadale on Thursday and by all reports it was a positive one for both parties.

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

    • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
