I know we need an A grade midfielder but whatโ€™s peoples thoughts on splitting pick 5?ย
Given the evenness and depth of this draft if we could get a top 10 and a later first round pick it might be worth it. Give JT two picks to work with.ย
Also I wonder if the combine might change the order a bit more this year than others. Could be a few bolters

This could be how we land Houston and keep a first round pick.

Houston and pick 13. Just guessingย

or say pick 11 and pick 16

again guessing the numbers but if the draft is as even as suggested then what is smarter ?

trust in JT. ย Given us the goods in earlier years why not now !

I pray we don't even contemplate that 640MD

Don't underestimate Reid.ย  He's coming with a rush. He's highly regarded.

Heโ€™s insanely classy but Iโ€™m just not sure heโ€™s got enough pace to get anything like Daicos comparisons.

I can see Caleb Serong comparisons with the quick hands.ย

Iโ€™d like him, but I think we need someone who can really run or can dominate the contest. Ideally both!

With pick 5 we will hypothetically get a 200 game player of elite talent who we can shape the team around, most probably a midfielder to replace Brayshaw.
ย

If we trade for Houston and get 13 back, we get an AA half back flanker for another 70-100 games and a speculative mid teens pick. Iโ€™m not sure having Houston is really going to evolve our team that much that it will move the needle and put us back into contention. If we are looking to trade pick 5 I think weโ€™d be better going for a Key Position player or an elite midfield talent if available as it is more likely to have a greater impact on our team. One of our best finishers going inside 50 at times was Windsor, if we can find a midfielder in the draft with footy smarts and is a good kick that should compliment our existing midfield.ย

Pendlebury doesnโ€™t have much leg speed but is incredible in traffic. I guess it depends if we think he could be a similar player or not

if the draft is deep this year we should look at trading our future first for another top 10 pick. You would think we are attractive as quite possible next years pick could be high as well. Maybe Freo will trade with us? Deathride them again. that would be fun.

Not supposed to be that deep.ย
Hopefully our pick will be outstanding for 300+ games.

That would do.ย

ย

Bit of Sheezel in Reid, we don't typically take smallish mids, wonder how we view him

All the talk is that this draft is super deep with some handy types expected to be picked late in the second and early third round.ย
The very top players in this draft donโ€™t seem to be rated as highly as those in the past few years.ย

Quite possible he goes before our pick. Huge scope with this guy according to someone I trust.

Agree. Lalor at 187cm and Langford at 190cm offer inside footy contests and marking ability.ย

Yes to Lalor also

Reid also has the moves, a turn of speed and disposal is first class.

Pendles class hides how good and strong at the stoppages he is and his size is vital to that.

But youโ€™re right, if youโ€™re really good size/athleticism doesnโ€™t matter as much.

It might be the greatest junior highlights package Iโ€™ve ever seen. Itโ€™s bonkers.

But itโ€™s also just highlights, and I have doubts on some of the kicking especially where he loops it to space. That wonโ€™t work in afl footy.

Right now Iโ€™m saying he could be Ablett Jnr, could be Bailey Laurie!ย

I think there is a general consensus on DL that we trust JT to identify young talent, itโ€™s Tim Lamb & Co that are the worry. If the thinking is that the P window is wide open and we need mature top ups, JT may not be getting the early picks.ย

Wouldnโ€™t mind if we could get Sid Draper. Not often that an underage player (last year) is close to the best player in the under 18 championship. Has speed as well. Also, heโ€™s another South Adelaide player.

Actually, it would be good to get two of these inside midfielders if we can trade a future pick

No way.ย  Laurie moves at snail pace and coughs the ball up quite a bit under little or no pressure.

Laurie might be a good ordinary AFL player at some point.

Reid is a fair way ahead even at this early stage.

Reid looks fantastic to me. Laurie had some special moments to in his draft highlights.ย

Is any of those kids Cripps size mid?

Cripps-Bont type mids are the noted feature of the top end of the 2024 draft.

And there was much rejoicing!

Talls kick in from about the mid-teens through to 30ish.

Basically the perfect draft for our immediate and longer-term needs. Would enthusiastically endorse trading a future first or second.

Heโ€™s a fabulous kid; good leader; in the Robert Harvey mould at junior level - rarely tackled. He was a regular 30-35 touches and 2-3 goals a game at U16 SMJFL.ย

Weโ€™ve got Spargo coming back, Reid looks a bust to me.

Ok let me put it this way.

I suspect heโ€™ll be at least 20% better than Laurie and at least 20% worse than Gaz Jnr. Somewhere between one of the best of all time and a vfl player!

Where he fits on that continuum time will tell. Athletic testing and evaluating his scope will be crucial.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
