Let's not bury the lede here; what are the panels thoughts on whole Christian Petracca situation?

Thoughts on Clarry to the Cats and Viney to the Kanagas rumours too.

It's going to be a long off-season.

It was great to see Judd McVee get some more midfield minutes finally. So happy for him to snag his first AFL goal too. We love midfielders that kick goals.

Jack Viney was fantastic today. Heart and soul and bleeds red and blue. Please stay Jack.

Captaincy next year, should we give it back to Viney?

He's heart and soul, quiet warrior never complains. Leads by example.

1st and most important question, Andy, how was the weather? Looked amazing. What was that big bright thing in the sky?

What a fantastic game by the Dee's. So satisfying to watch after the week we've had.

How do we beat the pies? Traditionally we cut off corridor and smash them with pressure. Is that enough? Has their game plan evolved or is it pretty much the same as last year, must admit I haven't been watching the pies as much this year.

thought ed langdon was outstanding today. he’s had a super fantastic season.  unreal that he has signed on and committed to the dees for a couple more years.

Forward line was on song today. 10 goals from the 3 big guys. Disco 4 and 3 apiece from Rooey and Petts.

Disco has a lovely pair of dukes. Clunks everything.

Really impressed with Marty Hore the last couple of weeks. I thought he was doing ok before getting injured early in the year too. What’s his contract status going into next season?

I think Max officially stamped his 7th All Australian card at Carrara today. All hail King Max. Surely the best ruckman of all time.

Sparrow is our latest casualty in the midfield. Surely this means Judd McVee will get some more midfield minutes this week. Andy Moniz-Wakefield racked up 35 possies in the 2s. Will he get the call up this week? Any other changes for the Pies? Can’t see Benny Brown getting a swan song even after 6 goals in the e 2s considering the 10 goals from our key forwards against the Suns.

Thanks as usual for your hard work in getting out my very favourite podcast.

Where has the run, dare and flair been hiding all year.  Will this be the new red and blue print for the coming season?

And your thoughts on ANB's trade / replacement place.

GO DEES

Gents, this win will no doubt be played down by the media.   Only the second time GC have lost at home and we did it by 50 points.  This is a club by all reports may as well shut the doors.  Even the commentary was bloody woeful, we were up by 20 point in the third and all they talked about was GC and Mac Andrew who was comprehensively beaten by JVR in all stats.

Rivers looked cooked and the midfield role may be catching up with him, his kicking was poor.  His short kicking has always been a bit iffy.  But a pre season into him focusing on these things I thing he is in for a big year next year.

Now let's all get to the G this weekend, it's our turn to end the Pies finals hopes!!  Oh it will be so sweet, please let it happen.

Hello Panel members. Thanks again for your inciteful thoughts, deep analysis and clear love of the Melbourne Footy club on your weekly podcast.

This week I'd like you to discuss the worth of Adam Tomlinson.

Three areas that interest me are,

1. How good is Goody. I know I'm preaching to the converted with you Binman but keeping Tomlinson on the list when half of Demonland wanted him gone and slotting him in to a successful defensive system is very good coaching and list strategy.

2. Three quarters of Demonland thinks Blind Freddy would have played Petty back when Steven May went down but Goody again stuck to his guns ( much to the detriment of the Goody is too rigid, cohort ) and kept Petty in the three emerging forwards group and was once again rewarded for his thinking with one of the Dees best wins of the year

3 Tomlinson has slotted in seamlessly to the full back spot in the absence of May in the last two weeks. I know he has his weaknesses but his short passing and defensive work has been very good. I can't believe a team like Gold Coast or many other teams wouldn't try to pick him up and how hard should we try to keep him on our list given the age and increasing fragility of May? Given the crazy offers last year for McKay who went to Essendon and has been actually very good I'm not sure Tomlinson isn't just as good.

My question is on the pod itself.  Each week you say "thanks to our very loyal listeners" or something similar.

What I'd like to know is, what are the listener numbers like?  Do you have stats on average listeners / downloads, as well as variances for losses v wins?  Are there any podcasts that were really popular v others?

And the real elephant in the room; how big was the drop off in listenership (sp?) when Andy was away??!

Thanks again team - love the pod

MIDFIELD

Was it just me or did we seem a lot better not only without Oliver but after Sparrow went down? Do we usually too many midfield bulls who can only extract the footy and can't run, chase, apply pressure, or execute kicks? It seems to me that the makeshift midfield in the second half against the Suns was made up of players with better kicks and better run, is this the difference? Is this what the midfield should be? Fewer Viney/Oliver/Sparrow types and more Trac/Riv/ANB types?

OLIVER

It's pretty amazing how much better we look without Clarry. Does the panel think the mentality at the selection table has been that an injured Clarry is better than the next best replacement? And if so, has this mentality been found out as wrong?

'CULTURE'

If we suppose that there is a cultural issue at the club, what does that panel think is the source of it? Is there division within the playing group and if so, what is the divide? Surely Trac, Gawn, Vines and the other leaders are all on the same page, so who would be on the other side of the divide, if it exists at all?

100% agree Deeminion.
My questions for the panel:  Is Disco the long term KPF we have been craving?
Is a forward line comprising JvR, Petty and Disco an important part of our future?

Huge result to be the only interstate team to down the Suns up there.

We’ve now won 11 games so far this season when the footy gods have thrown everything at us including the kitchen sink.

The 4 games we’ve lost by under a goal this year have been costly: Lions by 5, Power and Giants by 2 points and Blues by 1 point.

If we’d won just 2 of these we’d probably be playing finals.

If we won all 4 of these games, we’d be in the Top 4 or even Top 2.

I think many other sides would be far lower than 12th this season if they had the kind of year we’ve had. Up the Red Leggers!

Don’t mind these 3 getting more game time together will only make the forward line stronger atleast until Jefferson is ready then Petty can go back when May is done...

Disco is only 22 and at 194 cm with strength, mobility and ground skills there is certainly lots to look forward to.

The tape if that game should be replayed all summer. The style and approach we played with yesterday should be the no.1  approach that we aim for, attacking quick through the middle yet still keeping good defensive shape.

Is this a sign of things to come? And if we don't have the players to execute it with good skills and ball use should the no.1 priority be getting players who can? How many very good to elite level kicks* do we need to implement this style regularly?

*Players that can hit targets 30 to 50 metres away at least 9 times out of 10.

How much do you love the JVR - Petty - Disco fwd connection? Lots of 'Agro' in them which you have to love.

How do you think we will perform this week?  Can be a big ask fronting up after travel and a game in hot conditions.
last game of the year hopefully training is just walking laps this week!

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
