At some point the AFL will send out the memo to the media outlets to STFU about all this stuff as it is detracting from finals.

100% - it's ok for the dead week between the news cycles of end of season and finals anticipation...

The frustration among Demons fans and the club could best be summed up by an exasperated supporter replying to one of Petraccaโ€™s cooking videos on Instagram: โ€œAll this turmoil going on with the Dees, but thank f--- weโ€™ve got a Crispy Rice Paper Pork & Veggie Dumplings recipe!โ€

The longer Petracca does not speak publicly, the more room there is for rumour and innuendo to fill the vacuum. The theoryย Petracca wants out of Melbourne for Carlton or Collingwoodย so he can grow his personal brand has grown legs.

Fans can begrudgingly cop their stars leaving for more money or on-field opportunities โ€“ itโ€™s common โ€“ but doing so for more social media followers?

There is a belief held by some at the Demons, according to a source with knowledge of the matter, that the clubโ€™s issues are being used by Petracca as a way to break out of the remaining five years of his contract and head to a big Victorian club, thereby increasing his public profile.

Petraccaโ€™s representatives say his personal brand is not a factor in his decision-making.ย

Leaving a club to grow oneโ€™s individual brand does not sit well among football fans, who expect their players to put the jumper first. St Kilda star turned pundit Leigh Montagna gave his assessment of the publicโ€™s change towards Petracca this week.

โ€œIt isnโ€™t coming out well for Christian at the moment, I donโ€™t think,โ€ Montagna said on Triple M. โ€œI think thereโ€™s starting to be a turn in regards to what the perception is of Christian Petracca.โ€

Monetising his considerable social media following has become another professional priority for Petracca, as is his right. Pasta bakes, stir fries and salads may not be worth as much as kicks, marks and handballs to Petracca โ€“ yet โ€“ย but heโ€™ll be hanging up the boots long before he hangs up the frying pan.

Using back-of-the-envelope calculations from numbers given by experts in the influencing industry, itโ€™s not a stretch that Petracca could earn about $500,000 a year from his culinary pursuits โ€“ well short of his $1 million-plus-a-year playing contract but not bad for a side earn.

Petraccaโ€™s 473,000 followers on Instagram are a fraction of that of cricketers David Warner (10.8 million and Steve Smith (4 million), basketballer Simmons (7 million) and F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo (9 million), but an overwhelming majority of that audience is based in Australia, and more than likely in the southern states where football thrives.

A skim through hisย @on.trac5 Instagram accountย shows 31 companies have had their brands in a paid partnership to appear on Petraccaโ€™s well-watched videos.

Natalie Giddings โ€“ the chief executive of influencer agency Hoozu, who help brands run their influencer programs โ€“ has worked with Petracca and his fiancee Bella Beischer, a lawyer who manages some of the Demons starโ€™s non-football commercial deals.

Okay, I tried doing my best to defend the future of our clubย in a balanced manner.ย

If Cristian [censored] on our club for the betterment of his brand, I will take the 'nuclear option'.

That means mining the internet and bringing up every disparaging remark ever said about 'CP5'.ย

It only seems fair, if that is his chosen path out of our club, which we all pay for, including his riches.ย

Like: why didn't the Saints take Cristian when he was clearly the best player in his draft year?

What's the true story about that time he reportedly ditched his teammates in New York?ย

Why was he unanimously cited as the most annoying player at our club in a previous channel 7 promo?ย

The above is kid's play. I have both the wherewithal and current motivation to go much deeper.ย

If our club continues to get unreasonably denigrated, we should all be here to defend it.ย

Understand your feeling, and it is shared by most of us here, but maybe you need to hold fire until Carlton are out of the finals to see if there is an announcement from the Trac camp.

I would like Cristian Petracca to stay at our club, but this just a reminder to his camp of how many of us might be feeling right now, after drafting Christian as an immature kid and developing him as "as an individual and football player".

He's got a premiership flag and a Norm Smith medal - he's achieved more than any player on our list since 1964. Only thing left is a Brownlow which he could get in a club that is going to be playing finals next year. We should but after this season it's not a certain like it was at the end of 2021 and 2022.ย

He has set himself up for life after football, but the money he can earn from that is contigent on his brand getting maximum exposure until the day he ends his career - which it must be said, is closer to the end than the beginning. So as much as it hurts to say it,ย  from a "rest of his life" perspective he'd be better off playing elsewhere.ย

No matter what decision he takes I would support it and would still thank him if I ever met him in person. He gave me the only thing I wanted which was a flag.ย

Of course that is being said, now that blame for this situation is being aimed at his brand manager, who is very close to him.

All the journos reporting this story have said a major reason for this issue is a desire to play for a big club and improve his brand. That is not something that has just been made up by all of them.

Why would you care about Christian Petracca's perspective compared to that of the Melbourne Football Club?ย

Seriously? While being being paid $1 million per season and then be willing to absolutely destroy the club for his own ends (based on speculation)?ย

Thank you for a sensible and somewhat lighthearted view.ย  This topic and DL need a fair bit of lightheartedness atm.

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Way back in March we contemplated the possibility of a Demon resurgence after Simon Goodwinโ€™s summer of love.ย Manyย issues at the club had seemingly been addressed, key players were returning from injury and a brand new day was about to dawn. We imagined the coach pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The team would roar up the charts, push aside every opponent and make its way to a Grand Final ending in ultimate triumph with Goody and Max holding the premiership cup aloft under a shower of red and blue ticker tape.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
