I'm definitely for it. Hate this feeling of nothing to play for. Don't even have our first pick so can't get excited about that either.

That’s the Fault of the Club, not the system

I think the AFL should introduce a Final 18.

That way, a team could win a big shiny cup in which to keep their wooden spoon.

If my memory is correct, about 100+ years ago Fitzroy was both bottom of the ladder and Premier in the same season. I think that it was during World War I when there were only 4 teams in the competition.

Memory? Just how f’ing old are you LDC?

I think there's more fundamental things that could change the fabric of the game, to warrant more of an outcry than the wild card weekend:

  1. Shorter quarters down to 16 minutes per COVID 2020.

  2. Less games during the year.

  3. Last touch out of bounds (although in fairness this change probably wouldn't be a disaster)

I just don't understand why people are getting upset over an additional 2 football game weekend in late August instead of just a slate of AFLW games, and the fact that finishing 7th or 8th would become a vulnerable position.

Would it really make much of a difference in the scheme of things?

And I also think that the fact that dead rubbers will be way more prominent in this year's run home, the AFL will be triggered into bringing this in next year.

Your inability to go a week without football shouldn’t mean the 10th best side (ie in the bottom half of the comp) gets to play a final just so you get another game to watch.

I think a wild card weekend would add some more excitement to the season.

We’ll clearly agree to disagree on this subject.

I'd prefer a wild card competition. The prize doesn't need to be a finals place. It could be two million dollars and be played Monday nights between clubs not in the 8 after Round 12.

Just like clubs in the EPL with the Europa League clubs could prioritise winning the Wild Card Cup over climbing from 16th to 14th on the ladder.

Radical but with half the fans if not more not having an interest in the season something needs to happen

Talk about rewarding mediocrity.

We've beaten two sides that will be in the 8 this year and we'd still be a shot.

I don't think we'll get within a bulls roar of finishing 10th irrespective of a wild card.

We are worse than mediocre this year.

I know you're a fan of more games BBP and I wouldn't mind something to liven up the season for the lower clubs but there's still something just a bit off about this.

Wish there was a way to trial it out other than the real thing.

They must be listening to me....

The AFL is seriously considering introducing a secondary tournament that would run during the premiership season, award millions of dollars in prizemoney and could even offer the winning team a spot in the finals.

Prefer this to a wildcard weekend.

Main benefit being it could make the regular season more fair by having say 18 home and away games (9 home 9 away) and then having this tournament style thing in between.

Tbh I'm not overly fond of either, but if they really want it then maybe....

do we really have to follow in the nba in everything we do, we have our game thats unique lets keep it that way, also the last thing the players need is more games

No I don't think we should... just saying if I had no choice and had to pick one of the options I would pick this

If people get offended and upset by the idea of a wildcard weekend, where heaven forbid we have an extra week of footy and the 10th placed side beats a mediocre 7th placed side to make the finals, then I'd expect those same people to walk away from the game with an in season tournament.

but we could be bad in two competitions

Big No on 1 and 2 (looking at you Dangerfield). 3 I don't mind but umps would still get it wrong - would support only between arcs like AFLW, as a wrong call inside 50 could cost goals.

Bigger no on Wildcard Weekend and even bigger no on the in season tournament being talked about - winning into the finals is a possibility and you just know HQ will manipulate it to get Carlton or Essendon in, or even more so Collingwood or Geelong if they are having a bad year.

From the genius who brought you no free to air footy on Saturdays, "Round 0", the stand rule, the pre-finals bye, and "interpretations" of RULES, comes... a second tournament for rubbish teams mid season!

The AFL is a pathetic basket case. Is there a worse sports governing body in the world? Andrew Dillon is completely unfit to lead the game and may go down as the worst leader of all time. His administration makes FIFA look smart and just.

I am close to giving up on the sport I have religiously followed since the 1980s. We've moved beyond a sport and into sports entertainment at this stage. The game has never been worse.

Cricket and boxing immediately come to mind!

NBA - we will have tip off instead of ruck contests, last touch OOB instead of wrestling dinosaurs at throw ins, time out to stifle momentum, and blaring “music” when a goal is scored (though we sort of have that already at some games), and guys swinging on the goal post after scoring. And maybe even the 9 point goals from outside 50 that someone, maybe Eddie and Andrew Dumbitrio, a huge mimic of all things American, wanted.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
