@BLWNBAgiven the journos at afl media are described as "independent journalists", is this like saying the journos are non-permanent, contracted staff(employees), paid by afl media which is owned by the afl?

just like many organisation employ non-permanent contract workers, or is it different?

It's actually a little ironic...if the reports are true that he doesn't feel wanted by Melb then how wanted do you feel by a club that seem to think your valued at about pick 20 and half your current salary?

Yeah but he gets to contemplate how much they want him while enjoying the solitude on his farm.

All quiet on the Oliver front this morning. Must be real news to report......Like the hapless, beleaguered, wretch of a club securing pick 9 to add to pick 5 in a strong draft......all from a team that hasn't fired a shot for 20 plus years. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

Footy Furnace did report that we'll get pick nine, but still called the club "a mess"

The only reason Oliver hasn’t been traded is because he doesn’t have any takers willing to satisfy Melbourne’s conditions.

If a club were willing to pay 75% of his salary and hand over pick 15 then Melbourne would have offloaded him.

As it stands today Oliver is worth $750k per year for 2 years and pick 15-20.

Oliver is on 1.3 mill a year for the rest of his contract, even 75% is still over a mill a year and no one can afford that for a non top line player, plus we would still want good picks back. We already have his contract baked into our cap so not an issue for us.

At this point unless Oliver gets back to his form form line prior to 2023 no team will take him on his contract alone unless we paid at least half, let alone give any decent picks back in which case why bother trading. If Oliver truly wants out his only chance is to get his best form back then someone will take him at his full contract and give us picks we want back.

I'd say the employment status in terms of independence versus editorial control are two very different things.

It's as impossible as Petracca to get a trade even if either player wants one.

This thread has gone quiet ... is it all over @Roost it far

Because of the money, is Clarrie untradeable?  Looks that way.  A stalemate

The pay-cut talk?  Just talk?

It's time to hit the track, get fit and come out in round 1, full of running

Chances are that Trac, Ollie, Viney et al will have some new, talented company in the midfield (2 high-end pick additions)

That's exciting for them and us supporters

A new day, a new dawn

Yes, it's all but over

But what a whirlwind month it has been with regards to Trac & Ollie!

Now the story is picks 5 & 9

We are just constantly in the news these days.  It used to be only Collingwood that was in the news constantly

Not sure if that's good or bad.  Keeps us on our toes at least

And let's not forget how we were the media darlings for a year from September 2021

Fascinating how as soon as real trades started happening this story sank like a stone. Nothing has actually changed, his salary was always the same, the clubs position was always the same, the fact Clayton met Geelong was always there, and yet while there was nothing going on otherwise this story was at fever pitch, now there’s real trades happening… crickets. Maybe, just maybe, there never was a story but the media needed something to rave about?! I’m sure they’ll all say it’s magically gone quiet over the weekend though..

Agree with this.

Listened to McClure last night who is so desperate for Santa to deliver him the Oliver trade for his Christmas present.

Not a word spoken about Oliver last night after dedicating 50% of very show last week to him.

I'm not sure this rumour is done yet. Might be some movement in the next 24 hours.

That's right, sources close reckon we will know inside 24 hrs.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.
