Yes, a lot has gone wrong this year. No, we no longer have an excellent list capable of winning the 15 to 19 games you need to guarantee a double chance, let alone win finals.

We need to plug lots of holes, not one or two.ย

ย

You have to keep in mind that all this talk of what Houston might cost is only coming nuffy supporters of both clubs.

Always worth keeping in mind.ย

But if there's any truth to the rumour at all, he won't be cheap.ย

To the rumor and that's all it is.

Weโ€™re losing more games than we have if he isnโ€™t kicking all the goals he kicks. When the rest of the ground functions correctly Fritsch is perfectly fine. What does over all forwards mean? They dont kick as many goals, two of them are closer to mids than goal kicking forwards and one is a small forward while Fritsch is a mid forward and compares favourably to the other key forwards of the comp in goal kicking over the last five years.

If we put Chandler, JVR, Pickett, Tracc, Melksham and hopefully from next year Jefferson in the Fritsch role theyโ€™d kick 80% of the goals he kicks.

And weโ€™d more than make up the other 20% because weโ€™d have someone who competes on the deck, can lead up and crash a pack and we can mix and match based on match ups.

Heโ€™s a one dimensional player in a side thatโ€™s crying out for different options. The time is right to cash in now before he has no value left.

We won a flag after trading Watts and Hogan. You got evolve the list and give talent to get talent.ย

Without going into full 'butterfly effect' mode - I wondering how many non tackles from Fritsch directly results in a goal to the opposition....

He's expensive, but he's exactly what we need.

Someone that can thread the needle into our forward 50. And kick effortless goals from outside 50

You're naive if you think it's only a rumour. Cal Twomey is right about almost everything, speaks to all recruiters and managers, and knows what he's talking about when he mentions draftees and players pick value. Smoke/Fire

Neither Watts or Hogan achieved much at the time. Fritch got us a premiership in 30 seconds of play.

i don't think we need to plug 'a lot of holes' at all

the margins between success (finals) and failure (not) are so slim in the 2024 afl season

i'm very confident that we can 'bounce' in 2025, and i imagine the supposed desire from houston by the footy dept is a huge part of their confidence in doing the same

Exactly this. Cull the lazy culture killers (Hogan and Watts) and bring in hard workers with talent. Iโ€™m not sure who they are on our current list???ย
ย

Fritta is our best forward atm. He kicks goals and performs at a level that is elite for a medium tall forward. He would kill it in a team with better midfielders with skill and KPFโ€™s who monster the opposition.ย

I think I would rather we keep our powder dry so to speak and work on offering a monster offer to Finn Callaghan next year.

Get Isaac Cumming as a free agent. Get a genuine back up ruck. If we can find a decent key forward/ruck that would also be great. Then try trade our 2025 first rounder to get a 2nd first round this year and try take 3 picks within 30 or something along those lines.

Great post @DistrACTION Jacksonย - I never think in terms of what is happening ahead of time and could be more beneficial than a trade in the near and now. I appreciate posters like you ๐Ÿ˜˜

Um I would entertain it!

We should not give up 2 firsts for Houston it would be malpractice. He's nearly 28 and it could end up being 2 top 10 picks. Absolutely ridiculous.

What if Houston cost one first round pick after we split pick 6 with two late first rounders? Would you take him? We get Houston and keep a late first round pick.
ย

Iโ€™d trust JT is this scenarioย
ย

Houston is a great trade if the price is right. What is being reported may not be what it takes to get him. Players who want to move and name a club usually get to their club without fuss.ย

I wonder how Bailey would fare in a team that played to his strengths, I think heโ€™d comfortably kick another 15-20 goals a year - his working day would certainly be a lot more enjoyable.

I bet heโ€™s had some very lucrative offers float his way in recent years

Agree, he'd be a genuine coleman chance in a side that delivered the ball better i50

That is why we are trying to play the turnover game as that works to his strengths. Unfortunately we havenโ€™t been able to get it going yet and itโ€™s quite new to a lot of our players.

Fritta is a problem in a forward half territory game. Which wasnโ€™t really a problem in the past.ย

We generate enough turnovers , what we lack is the ability to chain together and spread in order to consistently turn turnover to score. ย This is part fitness, part trust, part learning/understanding but the biggest part is skill and execution.ย
ย

Id put Fritt in a HF next year, see how he goes as a link up player. He has great vision and skill.ย

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

  • PREGAME: St. Kilda

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.

  • VOTES: Richmond

Kozzy Pickett was the man of the match last week and has a vote lead over backup ruck Max Heath who didn't play this week and 5 votes over former Saint Jack Steele. Who gets the votes in this weeks shortened match win over the Tigers? Your votes please. 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 & 1.

It's Game Day and the 2026 AFL Premiership season is almost upon us as the Demons take to the field for their final practice match before the first ball is kicked in anger in 16 days time. What are you expecting to see from the Dees today as they take on the Tigers at Mars Stadium in Ballarat?
