Sam Draper must be licking his chops. On face value it does make us more mobile but I anticipate clearance numbers will be down without a genuine ruck.

I can't say I thought we’d roll with no ruck, but 100% see the logic.

I think Goody could have named Chandler in the ruck and you would have found a way to 100% see the logic. 😛

A loss at the selection table is the worst kind of loss, as it's an avoidable one.

Let's hope that's not the case on Saturday, otherwise it adds to a long list with Goodwin.

Ballsy move.

It will be interesting to see how our ruck situation plays out on game day. We haven't been making the most of Max's taps this year, but he is irreplaceable around the ground.

Will we just try and read the opposition taps like many teams do to Max?

Will we go more aggressive in the clearance battle than we have been to mitigate the damage?

How much ruck time will Petty actually play? The ruck position is so physical and Petty has been managing so many injuries over the last few years.

How can Fullarton go from emergency to not listed when Max is injured? If he isn't injured then questions need to be asked about why he was brought into the club.

If we win then Goody is a genius. If Petty gets injured or if we get smashed it will be a disaster.

Looking forward to seeing it play out.

Horses for courses.

Wet forecast and v a strong ruckman. I can see the logic...

I do agree we've lost more than a few at selection.

Definitely a gamble...

Verall because at some point we need to replace maxy, who by the by also spent a long time in the magoos.

Fullers because he was on the market, in our price range and worth a gamble.

It's on fulllers that he hasn't made it impossible to not select with a body of work in the VFL.

Why did we retain Schache as well?

Verrell aside, the other two aren’t in development mode. If they can’t fill a role when it’s clearly required, they should be delisted and make room for others who can.

This is of course not on the players themselves, but on our list management. I understand the gamble on Fullarton, but the Schache retention as well makes no sense. Especially when we had Tomlinson stay on.

I resemble this comment.

But seriously, given spargs is about to have surgery on achilles I might struggle with the logic.

Unless of course it was just so crazy it might work.

Not too fussed about about 'tactics' of the non-ruck selection, nor the result

Even if we win by 10 goals it's a mistake to expose someone as fragile as Petty & someone as valuable as JVR to bulk ruck mins

I really feel a ruckman is only worth what they can do around the ground. Ruck duels for me are such a 50 50. Don't mind the selection at all! Much prefer it to playing someone they don't think is ready.

I'll reserve judgement till after the game. I'm fascinated to see how it will work out.

Because we are paying Schache peanuts and need a key forward at Casey for structure and to help with Jefferson's development as jeffo gets the second best key defender.

And let's say we did cut Schache, it's not as if there is a pool of gun ruck forwards floating about who we pay peanuts and they do any better than Schache.

Well, this selection has made the game a hell of a lot more interesting to watch.

A lot of pressure on the midfield to step up and force turnovers. I feel that is going to be the key for us.

Mildly confident about a win on Saturday evening.

Go Dees!

Mabior chol was up for grabs and we didn't even talk to him....

so no recognised ruckman - brave, foolish, or both?

Going with B for Both ;)

Love how Goody got abused for being too safe. Another example of being creative - keeps playing the kids, positional changes and done so all season long through experimentation and necessity. Look forward to seeing how we go without Max, may be an early insight in a few years time.

This guy really stands out as a complete ball bag of an umpire against us.

There’s enough there that if I’m in the club I’m asking the umpiring division to kindly please explain (with video accompanying of course )

I’m really angry, apparently Petty & JVR will be sharing the rock duties

WTF is Goodwin doing, Petty is useless in the ruck & our forward line functioned well without him & JVR really growing as a key forward.

Whats the point of having Fullerton & Verrell for that matter if they’re not getting a game when Max is out!!!!

Seriously what the hell

Nar not what the hell... more like WTF

Tbf there’s not much difference in height between Fullarton (200cm) and Petty (197cm).

Fullarton isn’t really a genuine first ruck, so can understand their rationale. I imagine if it doesn’t work well they will likely change next season week.

As others have said, the issue is not that we have overlooked two poor options in Fullarton and Verrell.

The issue is that we're destroying our forward structure, and potentially the players themselves, by asking Van Rooyen and Petty to play as permanent rucks, particularly against an aggressive ruckman like Draper.

It is exceedingly poor selection and coaching, which will look even worse if we cop another injury to a key position player.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
