POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Brisbane

And how much is people's view of that incident coloured by the over the top reaction and accusation of staging by the commentator?

They only showed a replay once and it didn't look like he staged or flopped to me.

I watched the game at the Lincoln Hotel in Carlton. Mercifully-muted screens, and enough interest from the attendees to provide the right kind of ambience.

A few Brisbane supporters in my midst too, but I must say they were very respectful of the Dees. One of them even confessed to me that Trac is his favourite non-Lions player and we would have thumped them without his absence.

It’s time we question our fitness and conditioning and get some fresh faces in this area in 2025.

Our fourth quarters have been a total shambles this year

Thoughts @binman?

Agree Jaded. A slightly different approach  to our fitness program might be in order. We have had the Burgess philosophy for about 5 years now. Change is as good as a rest.

The comp is all about the survival of the fittest now. Rivers is looking good in the middle but needs a bigger tank to play there week in week out.

I might be wrong here but remember last year reading we were the highest scoring 4th quarter team?
Last 2 weeks we haven't gotten a goal in the last 2 weeks.  Wonder what's changed? Apart from a little more inexperience in the team.

So TMac has been great down back but he should be forward where he hasn’t had a kick since mid 2021?

The forwards play won’t be fixed by shuffling deck chairs. We need better coaching and mids, but aside from anything we need continuity in what we do have.

Fritsch somewhat pulled his finger out last bought. Petty’s having a go. Disco has a real crack.

This is as good as it gets for 2024

Nailed it

I was thinking about Quantum Theory and the Multiverse, as I do after a loss, and according to the Many Worlds Interpretation the universe branches all the time. Just like Schrödinger's Cat is both alive and dead, for every umpire decision it either goes against the Dees or for the Dees, the universe branching at each decision point. Likewise with each shot at goal - the Dees kicked a goal and they didn't, all at the same time. Which means that there is a universe where the Dees got all the free kicks against Brisbane. And not just that, every free kick all year, just as for goal kicking, where there is a universe where the Dees haven't missed a single shot. It stands to reason that in this universe we won every game.

I want to go there.

we had the most under 22s in the league. It you watch the game it was the younger legs that tired in the last half and we started getting opened right up. Just too many kids compared to the lions.

Overall it isnt as bad as some on here think. the old Dees wouldnt have found something especialy with so many young players.

What kozzie did last night we need more on a consistent basis & if he actually started tackling more then he'd be the complete player.

Then leave him the forward line full stop.

I mean how could anyone watch the second quarter, how we were running in waves, creating overlap and transitioning wnd to end, amd compare it to say the freo game where looked like we had lead in our boots, and think our fitness isn't on an upward trajectory?

I agree with much of your response, but unfortunately the above is little consolation when we are likely going to hit peak fitness just as we hit our off season, since we are unlikely to make finals.

It might be poor luck or bad management, but there’s no doubt that our fitness has been an issue and moreover our injury management. Rushing in underdone players as one example.

I certainly wouldn’t be shocked if we moved on from Selwyn and brought in someone else to run the fitness department

We played much better

more tackling pressure and run which supports the @binman thesis that post loading our energy levels are at full capacity

look at the cattle they have in the fwd line though - hate their guts but Rainer hipwood Daniher and Cameron et al are a strong combination

had they kicked better….

The telstra tracker is just about the best publicly available indicator I can find that gives a sense of where we are it in terms of running on top of the ground and our fitness level.

Near the end of the first quarter I checked the numbers to test my sense that we looked in good shape.

When we are, we almost dominate the top 5 in a number of categories

Number one is for average speed in defence (which is defined as when the oppo have the ball). When we do, its a goody indicator our all team defence is on. These are the numbers near the end of quarter Screenshot_20240628_201553_AFL.thumb.jpg.ff34a032f6cf39137b1e31fbbf024f44.jpg

Not going to blame anyone.  Great effort.  Can't believe a team full of 18 -20 year olds showed so much maturity.  Great for our future .

Many carrying injuries including Max.  Clarrie had to have work on his groin during the week.  Lever first game back.  Obviously Bowey had been carrying that back for a while.  Petty has had foot injuries all season and sustained more so don't know why people target him so much.  Windsor is only a young guy and hasn't had a breather all season.  Rivers has been thrown into the middle to learn a new role.  We had to go with an oversized defence with 4 talls and still put great pressure on.  Our forward line is built around 2 ex defenders.   3 of our main midfielders in Tracc Brayshaw and salem are gone.  Likewise our back up midfielders in Jordan and Harmes have gone.  Our back up wingmen in Billings and Hunter haven't worked out.  Our 4th forwards in Melksham and Smith who contributed around 3 goals combined each week are not there.

I think it amazing we should have won the game.

We were always going to lose after they showed that stat at 3/4 time.

Lions haven’t won’t a game when trailing at 3/4 time.

Dees haven’t lost a game when leading at 3/4 time.

Max jinx.

Why are the commentators trying to have a crack at a Melbourne player for ‘staging’ again? Kolt got bumped late by Zorko and how are they to know how hard he felt the hit? These commentators are a disgrace (hodge in particular) and I wish the club would call them out on their carp

But not a word about Saint Maynard 😡

I almost turned the TV off yesterday when these so called experts were getting stuck into Kolt. Ffs he’s a third gamer who got knocked over unexpectedly from behind. He has every right to lose balance and fall over.

How about we call out the piece of [censored] Zorko for his totally unnecessary late contact to a THIRD GAMER. Weak.

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int

The Dees played insipid, error riddled & uninspiring footy all night and in a lightning delayed match they eventually succumbed to Collingwood by 46 points at the MCG in the final game of the year. Thank God this season is finally over. Bring on 2025.
