Plus .... goalkicking .

 What is going on?

Effort and pressure alot better.

2nd quarter super.

Clearance work till three quarter time very good.

Kozzy fantastic.  Ditto Viney.  Rivers & Clarry till three quarter time.  Roo a very good first half.

Defence reasonably good aside form May with a number of dumb arrzz plays throughout the night.

And then there's coaching in the last quarter.  Bloody abysmal.  Simon just doesn't read the tea leaves

Max off the ground far too long.

Rest him on the bench sure, but how about resting him for a while forward too and try and snag a cheapy or two or just put Kozzy at his feet for the crumb and clear everyone else out when we're transitioning off HB?

Rivers not on the ground early enough towards the end of the match and brought on far too late.

Petty left on far too long in the second half.  Should've been subbed at the time he did his ankle with a minute to go in the last.  You could tell he was physically done.  And no point rucking him.  He's unable to get off the ground or compete at ground level effectively either once he's physically shot (eg, after half time).  Better to not nominate a ruck and just get an extra medium or small around the stoppage.  Like Brown!

A number of players who are just not up to it when the whips are cracking and need a good spell at Casey for mine and/or trade at years end.

Overall a decent effort but very poor coaching in the last, along with some dumb players / plays cost us the game in yet another "Shiiiite the bed" last quarter (off and on the field).

Personally i'm not sure Goodwin is up to out coaching quality opposition on match days enough of the time to get this team winning the close ones, more often than not.

Yes it's a game of inches but we are too often on the losing end in the close ones and being outsmarted in final quarters and or red time.

He just makes far too many blunders by taking far too long to ring the changes off the bench. Or in some cases no changes, such as the choice to not sub Shacke in last year's super tight final and bringing Brown on far too late in the game tonight.

He also places far too much faith in players on horror form runs like Petty, Fritta & Chin.  Who eventually do / will show something (sometimes for the odd quarter or even two) but are also shown up at crucial times in matches like tonight's final quarter, where their form and/or fitness just isn't at the level and they're inclusion ends up costing us in the close ones.

Anyone else reckon it was a 50 to Rivers?

First impression was that it would have been in any part of the game other than the last minute.

That’s 2 weeks of zero goals in the last qtr, such a typical dees loss ingrained into our dna for 5 decades ..

not sure that is actually accurate

Stevic you gutless stain.

Any other team and that high late shot would have been 50.

Also well done on the too many steps call, i counted 15.

How many opportunities did you want to squander in the last boys.

Get ready from Goodwin pressed with  likes a lot of what he saw ..  want mention 2 last qtr goaless , want ever discuss why Jvr our only genuine fwd scarifies he’s game playing ruck & possible kicking a winning score, want accept petty is not a fwd.. want accept our goal kicking has cost us games & finals

No he wasn’t that photo is after the event Nibbler rolled over from his front Danniher was upright when Nibbler baulked

Nah mate watch the replay, he baulked daniher and took about 4 mini nibbler steps to the boundary, actually glanced up at his team mates who were clear in front of him. McCluggage was the only Lion near him as he landed the try. Viney and Woey were standing and another team mate on the ground. FCS, Viney had his arms out calling for it.

If anything, ANB was actually tripped by Daniher, who put his hand out to collect his feet

perhaps nibblers was deliberate. god know i have see players walk over the line countless times in other games and never once have i seen it called. so disappointing that it happened to us, at such a time. we had our chances but did not take them. i dont know why Goodwin does not change the team up when things are not going well, Petty would certainly have helped in defense and tom may have been a good addition down forward. bringing brown on in the last 5 minutes is an absolute waste of a young fresh player when we were obviously failing to keep up early in the last quarter. and again i must say petty should not be in the ruck, he just does not have it in him. it is a shame that ANB did not try to handball the ball into the lions players leg to go out of bounds. but it is what it is ... a crappy result. as for umpiring i still dont understand some of these rules. if a player is out of bounds and plays on or is called to play on while out of bounds isnt it out of bounds? when players kick play on from the kickin and run 30 meters or more without bouncing the ball, why is that not a free against them. when a player is tackled and they try to fend off a player and are still caught is that not holding the ball. when a player is swung 360 degress in a tackle then lets go of the ball is that not dropping the ball. Pushing players in the back to allow you to take a mark is that not a push in the back not a mark. and protecting the head is sacrosanct so they say, so is it ok to just give the player who was kicked in the head a free, or is it a bit like a maynard we dont have a rule about kicking someone in the head deliberate or not. can someone forward a cartoon version of the rule book to umpire 22 so that he can learn the damn rules so that we can have a fair game of football.

Thought we were outstanding. Really proud, anyone taking shots at our team should be ashamed of themselves. Complaining about not kicking a goal in the last? Really? It's hard to win a game of football and here you are having a go at them. Get a life

I’ll watch it tomorrow and take your word for it but not how I remember it

That nibbler free was obvious to me . Definately put himself over the line, dumb

Actually, if you go back and watch the replay, Joe had a hold of his foot.  That is why he fell over.

outstand my [censored]   defeat form the jaws of victory    Get a life for alot of us it is our life.  Great effort for what  NOTHING !!!!!!!

Heartbreaking but loved the effort that was the first game this year that looked like the demon way hopefully the boys can build on this and make something of the year if the dogs could win it out of the top 4 so can we season not over yet

Yeah, the odds were prohibitive. But I just couldn't see that the Dees had any hope of winning at all.

Here's the still as he landed the try. Viney calling for it. Lohmann's momentum heading towards May, Woey's towards Viney. Only McCluggage to beat. Handball along the ground would've done it. He panicked

I’d be mad as a cut snake if I was Max because close and “deserve” has got nothing to do with it.
Such a better effort though against the form side of the comp.

But we tried hard, doesn't that count for something?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
