This is a big game!  Freo are a good team without being outstanding.  very defensive and if its hot and sweaty in Alice it could be very low scoring.

Id say no change at this stage but if it does look like being a slippery ball kind of game, maybe a smaller fwd line is a good idea.

If its a slippery kind of game we may as well hand the game Freo now. I don't have faith in the Dees executing under these conditions... I hope I'm wrong this time.

We have an Alice Springian or two on here and they’ve said Alice Springs isn’t anywhere near as humid as Darwin. Don’t think it’s ever been a sweat box when we’ve played in Alice.

I assume it wouldn't be during the day, may be at night? Not even sure if it's a day or night game.

Cue the annual clarification on what the actual conditions are like in Alice at this time of year. Perhaps a local can step in?

Not sure they even have lights that work at Traeger.

But in short: the match is played in one of the driest deserts in the world, just shy of the Tropic of Capricorn. I'm also not sure the latitude of Cockburn.

I've flown up for it a few times for the matches- effectively like a clear spring day on the coast here in Vicco. Perhaps 26 during the day and then dropping down to 14 overnight... clear skies on both occasions. So needed a jumper as soon as the sun set.

The first quarter against Adelaide circa 2018 stands out as perfect footy conditions and we romped the Crows. Keep Clarry shaded and all is grand.

Every year this question gets asked and every year it's the same answer, won't be hot or humid so won't be slippery, wlil be dry unless it rains. Game is at 1.00 pm . forecast is no rain and 18 - 19 degrees everyone can stop worrying about the conditions.

Alice is effectively 15 hours (1500km) south of Darwin, probably has a different climate eh? #knowgeography

Locals can do it in eight.

I suggest managing Windsor for a week to refresh him to play KB and then post bye is starting to look right. This would be on the basis of his GPS showing this being required but he seems to not be covering the ground as well as earlier in year. Otherwise assuming Petty is right to go no change but need to see more from Petty and McAdam in next 2 games.

McAdam could not run in the last quarter. He looked completely spent. I'm not sure he's fit enough, but I also know we need to get games into him. Nevertheless, I would replace him with Tholstrup for the Freo game. We should be getting games into him, too.

Suggest McAdam will be retained for the exact reasons you point out. Needs more fitness and game time.

I like the look of McAdam. Not perfect yet but he looks like the sort of player that needs to have confidence put into him to play his best. I would stick with him and hope he repays the faith

The Kolt has a big future but I'd suspect he'd be more of a certain starter if they look to rest the likes of Chin or one of the other high half forwards

Been there a few times, the climate is similar to Regional SA. Dry (but not humid) but nights can be quite chilled.

I agree, I think now is a good time to rest Windsor, perhaps bring Kolt in for another taste, or give Woey a full game and make Billings the sub.

We have a long season still, and Windsor's speed will be critical when we get to September. No need to burn him out now.

I don't mind playing a player who may be lacking in fitness so it can build up their levels etc.

But makes you wonder how many of them you can fit in a team given Petty and McAdam are in the same situation.

Understand getting them match fit to AFL level requires some AFL matches but is there a limit to this?

It astounds me how little people know about Alice Springs! Oh it's in the NT so must be humid. For god sake it is in the middle of a hugh desert. The weather will be similar to yesterday.

AMW must be nearly ready for an opportunity.

Windsor may need a break, disposals and impact are going south

VFL watch - Jefferson 5.3, AMW 33 disposals, Laurie 25 disposals/2 Goals, Billings 25 disposals, Tholstrup 24 disposals, B Brown 3.3

In - Jefferson, Laurie, AMW/Tholstrup

Out - Petty (If injured), Windsor (Managed), Woewodin (Needs a full game at Casey)

Sub - AMW/Tholstrup

Bags are packed and heading off to Alice tomorrow.

Based on what I’ve learnt from Demonland, my life will be in constant danger from angry locals and I’ll be sweating up a treat as I try to out run them!

Surely not Laurie, he is good at VFL then goes missing at AFL.  AMW or Kolt ahead of him for sure.

Agree

But knowing Goody, he won't bring in fresh meat

Looking at the stats and highlights of the Casey v Sandy game, we should bring in Mitch White...oh wait!

Paging @Gator

Surely Fullarton plays if Petty injured. If not, why did we recruit him? Did he not drop out of the selected squad through illness? If so, must be close. With Freo having two genuine ruckman he can assist Max, particularly with the calf, and spend time forward.Means that JVR can 'stay at home' up front longer. More of a genuine ruck. Open to other suggestions.  For me it's way to early for Jefferson based on one good performance.

  • PREVIEW: North Melbourne

Can you believe it? After a long period of years over which Melbourne has dominated in matches against North Melbourne, the Demons are looking down the barrel at two defeats at the hands of the Kangaroos in the same season. And if that eventuates, it will come hot on the heels of an identical result against the Gold Coast Suns. How have the might fallen? There is a slight difference in that North Melbourne are not yet in the same place as Gold Coast. Like Melbourne, they are currently situated in the lower half of the ladder and though they did achieve a significant upset when the teams met earlier in the season, their subsequent form has been equally unimpressive and inconsistent.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

  • PREGAME: Rd 18 vs North Melbourne

After four weeks on the road the Demons make their long awaited return to the MCG next Sunday to play in a classic late season dead rubber against the North Melbourne Kangaroos. Who comes in and who comes out?

  • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
