Umpiring (Demonland in meltdown)

I respectfully disagree. I reckon it was holding the ball too until I saw his knee dig into the turf. Lucky we didn't get 50 metres playing on thru Langdon and Pickett.

His knee dug into the turf because he was dropping his knees to draw an in-the-back free.

In the pre match thread I said I was not bullish about the match because of a huge number of variables, including:

- what, if any, impact will the umpires have on the game?

This game was taylormade for them to make an impact and they definitely manufactured this result like a master clay potter.

You don't think 11 to 3 in the first quarter was unreasonable,? Those dob were very soft. That none or our tackles got us a htb decision in the first 3 quarters then it's paid everywhere? That the call of dangerous tackle cost us a goal and the four points?

You should get a job umpiring.

Seriously that was an atrocious effort by the umpires tonight.

It actually put me off the game.

That they could give that many soft frees in the first twenty mins of the game was just silly and uncalled for. About four of them were strong frees and they missed about four of ours.

Then they stopped giving frees pretty much. Half handed out in one quarter. why?

The game was over at quarter time so I guess they didn't have to do anything else.

A classic case of over umpiring. And yet not for genuine htb. They ignored all of Carlton's incorrect disposal for three quarters for some reason.

Last week we couldn't sneeze without the umps pinging us for htb.

Yeah, I agree, it was bad in the first half.

Being an umpire would be a very tough gig and officiating based off interpretation of rules and what they have in front of them in a split second. We don't have a game to watch without them so can't crucify them all.

Anyway, was highlighting the JvR tackle as my interpretation. Many calls and non calls went both ways, as does every game, can't win them all, all the time.

Not how it looked to.me or the commentary.

AFL gives explanations but they don't overturn results.

Time for an NFL style coachs challenge IMO

Insufficient intent decisions are pure pantomime. The crowd decides.

Can we make this a weekly thread? With the "not why we lost" or I'm not a conspiracy theorist" but . . . proviso.

Just one more thing.... Eddy Maguire interviewed the new appointed AFL Head of Umpires. An ex Umpire and police Officer. My father was a decorated Police Officer just to show no bias from me. But you cannot go around espousing to the Football Public what the "NEW" mantra of the umpiring fraternity three nights before a shambles.

It was two words INTEGRITY and IMPARTIALITY, and he repeated it many times in the interview.

Wow.  Umps review should be a long long session after last night.  It was a horror show.  Clearly their positioning or their interpretation is out of sync with the general footy population.  Maybe it’s poor positioning but with 4 umps, that was to be corrected.

Seriously though, do you / can you ever correspond, as a stakeholder entity, with the Club, @Demonland?

And seemingly determined by the crowd noise at times.

Even if he did deliberately put his head to ground it was still soft.

A player is going to get seriously hurt doing exactly that.

They need to fine players to stamp that out. It's very dangerous.

Not so much this one but it sets a precedent for other players to do the same

Appalling clear bias, NB #22 who always screws us, but we did lose it in the first quarter.

As soon as #22 turns up, you know where not getting any 50/50s it’s like 10 vs 90!

But it wasn’t umpires that cost us the game, it was a combination of Carlton starting hot, playing very well , and the ball falling in their laps in first quarter.

Extra point

Umpiring was seriously poor but it has no bearing on the game. We win the game 76-41 after giving up a 36-point Head Start. Don't give them the head start and you win by 6 goals and aren't blowing up over the umpiring.

Yes, the umpiring was very average, but if we turned up to play at the start of the game, instead of the 2nd qtr, we wouldn't have this thread.

Totally agree, though furious with that JVR call, this one is on the players.

They weren't up for the contest in the first quarter.

Ye, I think its a dangerous thing to say "if JVR isn't penalised we win the game," we would still be 2 goals down and it negates anything that actually happened after.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
