Reading all of the hand wringing about the Demons as we head into 2024 is enough to make me spew.  Honestly, can we be as big a basket case as we are being reported as?  The demons have huge challenges and massive messaging headwinds just to get to the starting line.

Today I got contacted about the Demon draw raffle - I’m in immediately.  I might break my oath to never bet on sport and choose dees for top 4, GF and premiers.

When you put coal under pressure you make diamonds.  We are under pressure now but I remain all in.

C’mon Dees, stick it up em all and take the flag!

Agree 100%.

Way too much woe is me self-pity around here lately. Tough day today I know, buts it's time to man up and get stuck into the season. I'm sure the playing group will use the setbacks over preseason as motivation. They'll give their all, I'm sure.

Go Dees.

I think the cumulative effect of all the events at our club over this pre-season and the subsequent media feeding frenzy can have two possible impacts on the team.

It can either galvanise them or knock the stuffing out of them.

I hope and pray it's the former.  Demons for Premiers in 2024.

A lot of talk about culture of late.

The culture of any organisation is not tested when you're flying.

It's tested when under pressure and there are internal and external shocks.

Let's see how ours stands up this season.

To paraphrase Paul Kelly: “They say the darkest hour is right before the dawn. And in the hour of the greatest slaughter, the great avenger is being born.”

Culture……you’re kidding right. Have you not watched us hitting the fan the last 4 months.

Is the vomit emoji because you haven’t had your eyes open to what’s been going on? How many club forums start with a warning to not discuss 40% of what’s going on? It’s unheard of, we’re claiming new territory atm. But away you go, dump the vomit emoji and go with the “We’re a top 4 club” Hahaha

The vomit emoji is because you're a tiresome bore. Can you give us all a break and leave one thread free of your wrist slitting.

I hope your right bro, cause after a few Xmas beers with some smart [censored] bombers mates I had a $500 bet we would make top four.  I've been thinking to try thr no Brayshaw no bet.  There should be a four schooner cut off for mates bets, I think I'm cooked.

Hopefully Max is taking the time to look each of his Teammates in the eye today.

The Number 10 Guernsey should be in the warm up room wherever the team trains this year.

We need players to Step up and take responsibility as Angus did, so well.

Look them in the eye Max, as you did in early’21, when the Players all went away for a few nights

Look them in the eyes again, and get that commitment.

The Media want us to fold like a deck of Cards. They want us to bleed and go away….

commitment 100%

The culture talk is a funny one tho.

Praised when we win the flag and now it’s awful over the past few months.

Kidding ourselves if this wasn’t happening in 2021 but just not getting caught - equally the other 17 clubs would all have their own things every year.

Concerning 2 out of 46 players.  We still get an elephant stamp for maturity if we keep focus working towards the new seson.

May brawling last year and that's about it.

If you were to look a bit closer you might notice some other leaves on fire but stick with your truth if it’s working for you.

King's Birthday will be a serious thing but I fully expect round 24 to be one to remember.

By then we will have worked our way through a difficult season, and that final round game against Collingwood will very likely influence both club's position in the top 4.

By all the pagan deities and ancestral spirits, we must purge that corrupting foulness.

So much emotion in and around the club that i can only see boom or bust scenarios. I really hope the adversity galvanises the group, but feel the Oliver and Smith scenarios may have be too draining.

Agreed that all these dramas and series of unfortunate events at the Melbourne Football Club will have either two outcomes.

We will either.....

Crash and burn and have a horrible season due to all these distractions and sad news.

Become galvanised and use all this adversity to rise up (like a phoenix from the ashes) and finally win a new Premiership at our ancestral home the MCG in front of all of us adoring fans and fanatical supporters who form the Demon faithful.

Let's hope it's the latter outcome which comes to fruition!

WIN THE FLAG FOR GUS!!! 🏆😎👍

GO DEMONS IN 2024!!!! 🔴🔵👹

Instead of being dismissive why don't you enlighten us of these other leaves on fire besides Clarry, Smith and now I suppose the heartbreak of Gus that might have some influence on the group.

If you've got some facts spill the tea old Roost it! Or is it more speculation?

I'm not so bothered by the culture 'bin'...

I always find that talk a little flimsy with all clubs.

Of course if we don't perform well on field this season then the C word will be all over here and the media.

It's going to be a tough year.

We are 5+ down before we start the season.

2 will not be back.

2 are pretty much done for, Tommy and BBB.

Melk is out for at least half the season.

Who knows how things will pan out for Clarry.

Petty can't get on the park.

It's going to be tough, good culture or not.

List management might be an interesting discussion.

There have been some puzzling decisions the last couple of seasons.

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREGAME: West Coast

The Demons hit the road in Round 8, heading to Perth to face the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium. With momentum building, the Dees will be aiming for a third straight victory to keep their season revival on course. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
