nah, i'd rather win games than have a moral victory

14 out of 18/19 games is a Bazball winning total. We got out of jail in Fourth Test and cheated another Lords  result 2 series in row. I was at both.

So get out the abacuses, slide rules, Casio desk calculators, power up the IBM mainframe and call in the statistical analyst think tank.

Q. To ‘objectively’ decide what?

A. Max Gawn as a ruck man ‘qualitatively’ has the greatest influence on team success of any of the ruck men in the land.

It's the contested marks that is the difference - 2.3/match, more than 50% better than all comers.

Here are Gawn's stats for 2023 with and without Grundy.

Metric With
Grundy
Without
Grundy
Diff
Matches 14 8 -6
Time On Ground % 78.1 86.2 +8.1
Rating Points 12.3 16.6 +4.3
Disposals 14.7 20.8 +6.0
Metres Gained 229.4 320.0 +90.6
Centre Bounce Attendance % 49.7 88.0 +38.3
Clearances 3.4 5.9 +2.5
Marks 4.2 5.4 +1.2
Contested Marks 2.2 2.5 +0.3
Intercept Marks 1.2 1.6 +0.4
Goals 7 3 -4
Score Involvement % 17.3 23.7 +6.4
Tackles 2.0 2.0 +0.0
Ruck Contest % 47.3 75.0 +27.8
Hitouts 21.8 32.5 +10.7
Hitouts Win % 50.8 47.0 -3.8
Hitouts To Advantage % 29.5 30.8 +1.3

Cheers appreciate the abstract,  summary and key points fellas. So that finally puts to bed the supposed benefits of the Tapp brothers synergism. KISS and make up works a treat.

Think 13 from 20 is the accurate figure.

Pay decent money for a guy who obviously wants to be no.1 ruck? What could possibly go wrong!

Real talk though he'd be a worthy successor, hard to know when that will be though.

Maxy took unders on his last contract so we could re-sign our other stars on long deals and will play for another 3 years if he remains uninjured. I actually thought that Petts did really well playing as our tall marking outlet from defence when Max dropped back.

So Max has 3 more years of his contract.?
He took unders - can you explain this please?

Thanks

Hi Dingo. He's hinted himself that he took less than market value when he signed his last contract in order to ensure there was enough left in the kitty to re-sign the likes of Gus and Vines to long term deals when other clubs were sniffing around them both. He might only have one year left on that contract (I think?) but I think he could play for another three at a high level, making it less than likely that we target another No.1 ruckman for at least two of those years.

Good news.  He’s soft.

Let's try for Ugle-Hagen and/or Bont instead.

I remember years ago posters would say ... let's offer next year's first pick ... and Bate and Dunn!! Not sure who the current versions of Bate and Dunn are!!

Tomlinson and Chandler?

Bulldogs taking dangerously long contracts with players, like we do…

or just locking up their best talent, like every other club does?

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
