  • Demonland changed the title to Jason Taylor on Gettable (17/11/23)

Only heard a snippet on Twitter in respect of visit to WA to meet Tholstrup. JT said that he's got 15 potential players at pick 11, and Tholstrup was the only one whose parents he hadn't met. He said it's important to meet at least one of the parents of potential draftees, and it was just circumstances that his visit to meet Tholstrup's parents was so recent.

My take is that Tholstrup is not a lock to be taken if available at pick 11.

One of the most interesting things he had to say was that he was still hoping to improve upon picks 6 and 11. Also the discussion returned to West Coast not having said no to our previous offer for pick one rather they have just not accepted it yet. In Jason Taylor’s mind at least, he has not given up on our ability to improve our draft hand.

6, 11 and future first (18 obviously) still seems enormous for pick 1, but Taylor has made some pretty unequivocal statements there about how much impact he thinks Harley Reid can have.

Unfortunately, if things do pan out that way, Petracca and Oliver can probably say goodbye to their Brownlow hopes!

Hmm, or, I guess, there's always the Voss-Black-Akermanis scenario.

Possible that we believe Petty will ask for a trade at the end of 2024 and that will net us a better first round pick than the one we will have ourselves, so its a gamble worth making

Gave nothing away other than we're still keen to trade up whether for pick 1 or improving our draft hand.

The recruiters do a mock draft together every year and it was this afternoon. If anyone gets details of how it went, please share!

@Lord Travis what do you mean the recruiters do a mock draft? As in all the recruiters from the AFL clubs get together and do a mock draft?

Yes, they do a trial run for the technology and any rule changes. Whether they actually input real players or they get set up with 70 fake names to work with I'd have no idea. Maybe they do use the real players and the recruiters use it to psych each other out.

Pretty ordinary interview, way too much time focused on Harley Reid and a random Matty Jefferson question.

Nice to hear about Kynan Brown but no follow up on the rookie only designation. No question about Marty Hore.

The 2 big takeaways were:

1. JT does see a gap between the first bunch of names and the second, but not a huge one

2. Best available seems the motto - whether that's true or not time will tell

They do use it to create a bit of intrigue for sure. We took Hayden Young and Pickett in the year we the two first rounders, so showed our hand slightly. Jackson the surprise bolter then, someone else could be the same this year.

Honestly the idea of a mock draft with fake inputs, and double fakes, bluffs etc. is amazing.

A kind of standard interview from Jason Taylor.

He is a smooth operator who gives the expected responses and keeps his cards pretty close to his chest.

As he says himself, the AFL National Draft is the "Grand Final Day" for AFL recruiting teams. Let's hope we get some genuine star players at the Demons!

Especially players that are elite kicks and excellent decision makers! Fingers crossed! 🤞

Good luck to Jason Taylor and the rest of the MFC recruiting team. 😎👍

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int

    POSTGAME: Rd 24 vs Collingwood

The Dees played insipid, error riddled & uninspiring footy all night and in a lightning delayed match they eventually succumbed to Collingwood by 46 points at the MCG in the final game of the year. Thank God this season is finally over. Bring on 2025.
