Unless we were guaranteed of picking up a gun key fwd with that pick then itโ€™s a no, Petty I think is only 24 currently.

We are still very much in our window this year and next. Weโ€™ve managed to find some great players in recent times with either later picks or rookie drafts. While May & Gawn are still out there we must go all out for another flag if not 2.

a fit and firing Petty is a huge asset to us. I would hold him to his contract as well.

The main issue i have, which tempts me to trade, is his durability. He misses a lot of games. I'm sure the FD will weight this up if the Crows make a proper trade offer.

Ahh the 3rd and more commonsense option. But champing me is taking things next level.

Did we seriously turn down 2 first round picks for Petty? Not sure whoโ€™s recruiterโ€™s made the bigger mistake.

It was pick 13 + Mcadam. 13 pushed out to pick 19  on the night. Was not some monster offer that seems to be insinuated. Petty has already proven himself to be a fantastic backman, if heโ€™s not a forward thatโ€™s where he will play for us for the rest of his career and heโ€™ll be a brilliant Steven May replacement.

I'm not sure. I think it's reasonable to say the jury is still out on Petty in terms of this offer, for sure

Not because of his form but rather his body. He has struggled with injuries at a young football age so it's fair to say until he gets a full season on the park it's hard to gauge his true worth.

Also it's not unreasonable to suggest that he may not be as versatile as previously thought.

How many games has he played forward? And aside from his great bag of six,  how many goals has he kicked.

That six bag was an incredible effort but I'd bet after that it's inconclusive to say he's a good forward player as well as defender.

Of course it's true to say our fwd line hasn't been settled with the group playing a good deal of games together.

He had a stinker last round and while probably our worst player, certainly wasn't alone.

All in all, I'd be tempted to keep him. One thing for sure, he has certainly demonstrated at a young age that he is a great quality defender.

Petty is a long way off gun reliable forward

Still not convinced

Petty is clearly trying to make up for an interrupted pre season, which isn't helping his form.

As he gets more match fitness across the year, providing he doesn't get injured again, I expect him to start owning the forward 50.

Keep the faith, folks. Lisfranc injuries can be career ending. You don't come back at your best after a month. He needs patience.

I'm willing to give him his slow start off the back of an injury that can take a really long time to come back from. BUT he has to start taking his chances when they come, I can accept he's going to take time to get back to what he was but we need more from him.

He's got the bye to get some time practicing his skills and kicking, but post bye he needs to be hitting the scoreboard.

I think a real factor in the decision to trade or not was "Petty's importance to our premiership tilt in 2024 and a lesser extent 2035".

Even if the deal was a good one on an assets basis, we didn't have a replacement tall forward lined up for this year and had (have) questions over BBB and TMac.

Draft picks last year were nice but that trade would need to have been serious overs to take that hit to our 2024 list. Edit: especially with question marks over Brayshaw and Oliver at that time as well.

Petty looks six weeks off it and I donโ€™t blame him, I think we rushed him back. But he doesnโ€™t seem to be marking the pill, thatโ€™s slightly worry8ng, he was always such a good mark.

Love the optimism but not sure Harry will still be around in 2035 anyway

Haha this may be the first documented instance of the whatever the opposite of MFCSS is!

Iโ€™m not worried about Pettyโ€™s form. Heโ€™s barely had a preseason, didnโ€™t play for large chunks of last season and will take awhile to find his feet. I also donโ€™t think you can have a forward line of Brown, JVR, Petty and Fritsch. Thatโ€™s basically pulling the band on the slingshot for the opposition. For mine once Petty finds form we send BBB to a paddock, hopefully McAdam can string 15 games together and our forward half will then become quite dynamic and unpredictable.

Fritsch JVR Pickett

ANB Petty McAdam

interchange Chandler

The way weโ€™re headed itโ€™s going to take a Herculean second half of the season.

1.  Petty has shown he is an A grade key defender. No doubt. Alongside May and Lever, he was a key part of our 2021 Premiership winning tall defence.

2. Petty played his junior footy as a key defender.  That is his place. Where he can use his judgement, height and strength.

3.  May wonโ€™t play forever. He has 2-3 years left at best.  Petty is only 24, with 10 years of footy ahead. Iโ€™d like to see him re-establish as a key defender.

4. The forward swap should be seen as a make shift option.  I know Petty can mark but he is not a natural forward. His kicking is ok but sometimes lacks the real confidence of a key forward.  I think heโ€™s being โ€œtriedโ€ due to deficiencies of alternatives like Schache.

5. We canโ€™t judge Petty based on Thursday night. Heavens. Iโ€™d trade out 12 players if Thursday night was as the normal standard they were capable of.  Petty will be better than that match.

He's a beautiful set shot but is lacking confidence this season, you can see it in his approach.

I just think he is lacking confidence in his body at the moment.

Get that right and he will be good to go, forward or back...

I think it's hard to fluke those six goal bags . One of which he had last year. He's got the skills....I think he's down on confidence.

he said the same about pickett this time last year too

two first round picks please - one for every premiership he'll have at the mfc at the end of 2024

Cornes said last week that he thought Adelaide was going to offer 2 first round picks for Petty.

And after the defeat against the Lions , he said Petty was not worth it !

Are you saying that about his form or Fox?

I have no doubt about his bona fides.

Heโ€™s repeatedly tracked opponents all the way to the back 50.

After May gave up the 50 he went and reassured the backline.

Thereโ€™s not a lot of evidence for this CBFโ€™ed except maybe some confused efforts against Brisbane where everything he tried didnโ€™t work.

Pettyโ€™s played 2.5 very decent CHF games.

Then one stinker against great opposition.

Was ok but not great in his half a game down back. Got beat deep a couple of times. (One on one defending was always his weakness though, just like Lever, better when in position to intercept.)

Honestly I think he just needs the freshen up from the bye and will come out and be very good.

And he needs some sports psychology against Brisbane because heโ€™s been awful the last 2 times heโ€™s played them and clearly they are in his head. Needs to find a way to get through that.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckmanโ€™s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipperโ€™s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

Following a disastrous 0โ€“5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
