This homesickness thing is very unique of the AFL. More likely than not ,in professional sports around the world, athletes prefer to go/stay in bigger markets or successful organisations. 

That doesn't seem to be prevalent in the AFL.

Imagine being an Aussie moving to the NBA or the Premier League in the UK. You would hear of AFL players getting homesick and laugh.

Except it’s not homesickness. There’s a huge difference between wanting to return to your home state/country for whatever reason, and homesickness, the latter being a legit illness. It’s a mental condition which can manifest itself physically in ways such as rapid weight loss due to loss of appetite, for one example. These players aren’t homesick and I hate that the word is bandied around so much. It’s yet another way of playing the mental health card which results in them being ‘untouchable.’

I am sure the salaries close to 20 million are the best cure for "homesickness".

The homesickness thing treads a fine line.... I bet if we offered him $1m a year for 5yrs v Crows $600k for 5yrs, would a player still be homesick? Or magically not homesick anymore. Not just talking Petty here either.

New rule- If you or your manager use the word 'homesick' at any point, you can be dealt to any club in that state. 

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt as it was an informal spur of the moment chat with channel 9 as compared to a pre-planned press conference, and he may have gotten his words mixed up. But, yeah, you can definitely sense that he wants to play for Adelaide as early as next year.

I have no issue with players seeking a return home due to homesickness (although one wonders why they embarked on a vocation that could involve interstate relocation in the first place), but I have an issue with the home sick player picking and choosing which club he wants to play for in that state.

Talk of Harrison Petty being homesick confuses me. He was born in Widunna which is 570km NW of Adelaide.

I assume his family is still there.

He did attend boarding school in Adelaide. Harrison stated, when drafted, that living away from home helped to prepare him for a shift interstate.

Talk about moving from Melbourne to Adelaide (to be close to his family) is akin to moving from Adelaide to Melbourne to be closer to Eden. NSW.

Studies have shown [citation needed] that AFL players have a statistically significant risk of an unusual comorbidity combining homesickness and chromophobia - fear of certain colours - that conveniently limits their options when it comes to relocation to one's home state.

Well, there's no clinical illness known as homesickness but it can expose underlying problems like depression and anxiety

Exactly. In 99% of cases its total BS and just the excuse the player uses to go back somewhere on a better contract. Something like the Dayne beams deal was most likely legit with his father dying but most are rubbish.

The fact we let it happen and don't hold players to their contract means that players and their managers will keep doing it.

Someone needs to stop it.

The new CBA allows for a 37% increase in the TPP from now to 2027.  So clubs have mega bucks to splash around.  Hence the crazy offers from multiple clubs to the likes of Ben McKay, Naughton, Petty etc

The new CBA allows clubs to front end new contracts hence why the Crows offer to Petty for year 1 is a reported $1m.

We also have that money to splash around and I would be surprised if the offer to Petty doesn't cover that of the Crows.

I know now Tex has a young family but when i saw him sitting in the stands giving an interview/apology after the racism thing i thought he looked straight out of the Village People.  Even a Freddy Mercury lookalike.
