Ratogalea !! I think he was nominating Power as his intended destination.  Not sure why but they want a KPB to compliment Allir or KPF to replace Dixon.

Another pre-season or two .  Puts a bit of size on.

With 50+ games under his belt and a bit of luck with injuries he'll be a ripper.

I posted elsewhere - I feel like many on here are buying into the media's argument that we don't have a key forward.  The reality is we've got Petty, JVR with Jefferson developing.  Then we have 2-3 agile medium forwards in Smith, Fritsch and likely McAdam / Melkshem. It's not the problem it's made out to be - we were unlucky to have our two talls out for carlton and fritsch still on his way back from injury.

What we are missing is the 200cm resting ruckman.  We tried with Grundy but he's an extra midfielder that rucks rather than a player that is comfortable taking contested marks.  Do we really want to have JVR taking the ruck when Gawn is off in 2024?  What about when he gets injured?  Can Gawn continue to play 80+ game time going forward and be fresh in September?
I've said it before but we should be going after the best forward / ruck going around.  He doesn't have to kick a bag each week - but if he kicks his one or two most weeks and rucks when Gawn needs a rest then that is what we need.

I'd be going after Tom Fullerton but I'm sure there's other options.

Seperate from that I'd be going after good ball users in the middle

The media pundits are correct.

- Petty has played a handful of games as a permanent key forward. 
- Van Rooyen is 20yo with just 20 games (28 goals) under his belt. Promising but still 💯 a work in progress. 
- Jefferson a complete unknown, even at Casey level! 

That’s not even in the postcode of being adequate heading into 2024. Not for a side contending for top four and a premiership. No way.

Collingwood have McStay and Mihocek who are hardly world beaters
Port have Dixon and .... Lord ?? (who's played less games than JVR)
Brisbane have two big key targets but this is the first year they've really got it together.

Of course I'd love Charlie Curnow, Jeremy Cameron etc but we're not going to be able to bring someone like that in.

I think Petty has shown he can play forward and you can bet that is the plan.

1. Mihocek/McStay have 300 games of AFL experience between them. Mature, hardened key position players. They also haven’t won the flag yet Collingwood so too early to go touting their virtues. 

2. Port aren’t anything to emulate . They keep failing miserably in finals for a number of reasons including their inadequate forward line options. 

3. Brisbane absolutely look the goods with their two experienced key forwards and will probably win the flag, in part, because of them! 

No-one’s suggesting we’re going to get Curnow or Cameron but there are some options out there we’ll have to look at to support this wildly inexperienced trio (Petty/JVR/Jefferson) we’ve currently got.

So I heard..I also heard the Cats were interested in Grundy.

What I didn't hear was any rumours of MFC trying to work with the Cats and Ratogolea.

 Maybe S.A is "home"?

..I was just puzzled and then I hear that MFC is getting  a 182 cm forward !

We may as well resign ourselves to TMac and BBB waxing injury time for another 12 months

He's already happily jumping into packs at Casey.  He's not going to break any games open next year, but he'll see game time and in a few years he and JVR will be looking pretty good.

Yeah and while Smith had a good last game I'm not pencilling him down for 30 goals in a year.

That's a fair enough response.

I guess my follow up question then is who are the "options out there"?

My hunch is that it is very hard to look good as a Melbourne forward - a lot of that is about the way we play in terms of priding ourselves on contest and defence.  Assuming they are injury free, I think Petty / JVR can do the job (particularly in a forward line that also has Smith, Fritsch and McAdam).  

In an ideal world we would have more but the reality is that every side has strengths and weaknesses on their list.  Do we really want to sell the farm (which is what it could take) to get a better than average forward (this year's McStay) when we have more pressing needs?  By this I mean a backup ruck or ruck/forward, coverage for May and speed/class in the middle / half back.

The best thing about Collingwood is they play a style to suit the players at their disposal.

‘Selling the farm’ for McStay? Pies paid nothing but cash for him as a free agent. 

Every side does have strengths and weaknesses. Ours are clearly in our front half. If we don’t address them this off season, after two years of finals failure, we deserve everything that’s coming to us in 2024. 

You are placing waaaay too much faith in a 20yo/28 gamer Van Rooyen. Still 2-3 years of development away from establishing himself at AFL level, particularly against the best fullbacks. He was nowhere to be seen against Collingwood in the QF.

Started off a little nervous and fumbly (or maybe that was just the impression because I always run these things at 1.25 speed), but he settled in and gave the impression of being a humble and wise young man aware of what he needs to work on and keen to do so.

He might be too high for our current second pick, and too low for our current first pick. Of course, with the sheer volume of trade pick shenanigans coming up it would be no surprise if we finished with a selection around 7 or 8.

Unless we can get ourselves a crucial player type in the trade period, I suspect we will even put our 2024 first round pick on the table to get into this draft as much as possible.
