if we rate kako as the best player at pick #6, then might as well nominate him and force the peptides to pay, as their good fortune in the change to the nga academy came conveniently when they stood to benefit

this would mean we'd take finn o'sullivan if that pick thus pushes back one spot

there really doesn't appear to be any consensus on the first round this year, whereas in other years it's all been more firm - and all the afl media scribes have wildly fluctuating predictions on who might go where

almost like they (shock! horror!!) don't know the inner workings of 18 professional football clubs

    It would be quite fascinating to be there while Jason Taylor and the rest of the recruitment staff discuss all these hypotheticals about who they think will be drafted where and what their strategies would be.

    We asked 10 of the best junior players in Australia who they thought (not including themselves) would be taken at No.1 in this year's AFL national draft. Here's what they said.

    Jagga Smith Nominated: Josh Smillie

    “When he’s at his best, I think Josh Smillie is the best player in the draft. It’s his ceiling, and what he could be. But if you want a sure player, I think you can go Levi Ashcroft – he’s as good as anyone.”

    Isaac Kako Nominated: Jagga Smith

    “He’s really consistent. Someone’s got to do it, and it’s always him. I love watching him play and love playing with him – great player.”

    Yes we interviewed him earlier in the year and not sure if we did again during the combine. Angove didn’t have as good a season this year as his underage year. Injured in preseason which caused some interruption.

    He has very good lateral movement, acceleration, vision and can impact the scoreboard.

    Agreed. @Nascent @Pennant St Dee like Judd McVee a few years ago, Cody could be late pick that really develops.  He’s got the pace, skills and smarts. I think he’s probably 4th round or a rookie pick.  I had him at 68 in my phantom draft (Sept 19th). Hope he gets a spot on a list.

    Every year there are players that jump up the order and everyone is surprised. Usually these are players that have low stats but show traits that will translate well into AFL. Windsor was one of those. Tholstrup was one of those. Tauru is another that has popped up late this year. There are a few players that I think will do the same this year that people are barely speaking about. It happens every single year that internet experts overrate players that get a lot of the ball over players that exhibit AFL level traits at lower volume. But internet experts are not real experts.

    It didn't sound jarring at all. It's a perfectly reasonable question, and that's just my own explanation for it rather than the gold standard answer.

    I think there are some players that are being highly underrated because they haven't been playing in the midfield or have been absent. Players like Travaglia and Hotton, the former because he played a lot as a half back and the latter because he was injured. Even a player like Finn O'Sullivan, who has struggled with injury all year, has been seen by some on the internet to slip down to the latter half of the top 10 and ranked behind some fairly middling talents due to lower possession numbers, despite probably being the best player in the pool. 

    But recruiting is difficult and I'm certainly no expert to listen to. I've just seen the same trends every year on the internet whilst following it for the past 20 or so years.

    i imagine kako has shot up the draft reckoning because the value of 'speed and pressure' forwards has gone up more and more in the last few years and he appears to be the top player of that type available in this draft cohort

    I’ll say. Imagine the stress on opponents trying to clear a ground ball from defense with Kossie & Kako buzzing around.

    Also don’t forget we were very keen to trade up for Watson last year.

    23 year old smokey defender in the same mould as Tom Stewart and we have strong interest in him.

    Good write up. I found some of the “best traits similar to” part quite interesting.  Some I agree. Others not so.  Murphy Reid … similar to Gryan Miers.  No. That’s not correct in my view.  Miers is a small forward scrubber who specializes in goal assists.  Murphy Reid is an accumulation mid with quick hands and smart decisions.  If he builds up, he could be more the Lachie Neale type who seemingly is creative and before you know it he has 20 possessions.

    Alix Tauru’s highlights look as good as any prospect in the draft. If recruiters think he will develop into a midfielder, he looks to be the full package.

    Tauru and Smith might be the players with the fewest weaknesses.

    The huge upside with him is that he's never really completed a pre season which why clubs have him really high up in the draft.

    The scope around his potential is incredibly high.

    There's a bit of Clayton Oliver 2017 element in terms of the upside with his conditioning and stripping down weight to an elite athlete type body to play more midfield minutes. 

    I would be stoked if he fell through to our pick.

    Not sure why there isn't more talk of Josh Smillie at 5, he looks a bit of a unicorn no? Interviewed on SEN and said he models his game on Cripps - the similarities are uncanny.

      As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

      Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

      Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start.
